What companies have done to solve this issue with HDR10 content is have a Dynamic Tone Mapping function on their TVs to act like Dolby Vision. It’s not as accurate as Dolby Vision, but it works. Biggest thing for you though is the HDR Optimizer Settings on your Panasonic Player. You haven’t said what setting you have it at. That setting on the Optimizer can help your TV tone map HDR10 properly. But you have to have it on the right setting. The reason why I’m saying this is that the majority of 4K UHD discs are in HDR10 and not in Dolby Vision. So you need to figure out what settings you need to have on your player and your TV to enjoy HDR10 content without complaining about it. |

Are you using an OLED or microLED display? If not, you may not see as big a difference between static and dynamic metadata. You can't change the setting without stopping and reloading the entire disc, so it is not easy to compare.

My tv is an OLED, LG C9. I have actually seen a big difference between static (HDR10) and dynamic metadata (Dolby Vision). That’s why I have Dynamic Tone Mapping turned “On” on my C9 as well as using the HDR optimizer at the highest level (Super High Luminace, 1,500 nits) to create a beautiful picture. It has gotten me close to how Dolby Vision looks. I usually go back and forth between my HDR10 Disney Discs and Disney + since it’s in Dolby Vision. Other than a few small differences, HDR10 content looks about the same as Dolby Vision now!

At first I thought it was the disc, but now I’m thinking it might be the player. What would cause this? |

I had to turn off the DV setting. I got know what was wrong with the picture, but it was horrible. Splotchy, wrong colors, blobs of color. I should have taken a picture. With DV off, Spider-Man looked good, but just faded. But now with the update, everything looks fine. No need to change a setting. |

The fadedness may be due to either how your TV takes HDR10 content or your Optimizer settings aren't set right. Again I ask, what do you have the Optimizer on your Panny player set at and do you even have it on?? Because if you think that Spider-Man looked faded without DV, that means that all of your movies that are just in HDR10 will look the same and there are ways to make them look more vibrant. Btw, I'm not trying to bug you. I'm just trying to help you. ![]() |

I think some folks don't understand what film is. If you jump from 2K scans to 4K, it's not about reading licence plates in the distance, you're not getting a more powerful telescope.
4K offers the most film-like representation of the source material, if you take a fantastic encode of a new 4K master and put the BD up against the UHD of the same master then they're going to be similar, but add on top high dynamic range, a wider colour gamut and superior compression and everyone of those releases are worthwhile to cinephiles and home video enthusiasts. |

I actually thought I wouldn't upgrade to 4K because I thought it wasn't worth it. But after knowing how much of a difference it really can be, I upgraded. And I don't regret it one bit! I love having the most film-life presentation of a film right at my fingertips. And if done right, the films look amazing! |

I would also make sure that your player has 24 p set to "On." I made the stupid mistake of having that "Off" for a while and wondered why every HDR10 disc looked a little off when compared to the Dolby Vision version. Low and behold I had 24 p "Off" and once I turned it "On," the bump in color happened. When off, the color space is in 8 bit instead of 10 or 12 bit. Now, everything looks exactly like it should be on my LG C9 and I couldn't be happier!

I’m digging through my emails trying to find this - how do you go about getting the updated firmware from regionfreedom? Do they offer a free upgrade or does it require another “donation” to get this update from them?

There's a fee, it's not as high as the original mod. I think it's £8-12.

FYI- I found this generic remote on ebay for $12.99. It is based on the 9000 remote and works on my 820. It lights up and has everything but the hdr optimizer button. Requires no setup.
