Refn and Villeneuve have virtually nothing in common IMO. If anything Refn is more like a younger European answer to David Lynch. Nothing Villeneuve has done is nearly as abstract and detached as most of Refn's output.

This is one of the best UHD releases. The only superior disc for me is Suspiria. But The Shining on UHD looks fantastic. Bright. Colorful. Almost exact to a film print. The only small negative is the very end in the snow. The colours are off compared to film. But this is such a solid release. My reference UHD disc.

You can really feel Blowbear’s fur in 4K.

It's probably the 70's tech etc, I much prefer The Thing's sharper and more contrasty picture to The Sining's slightly softer image. Still a great transfer, but a reference one? I think thats too much to say.

"70s tech" is as much a misnomer as "cheap film stock" which is what's funny.

The Thing was shot with a Panaflex unit that debuted in the late 70s. And the kicker; The Thing and The Shining utilized the same Kodak film.

Cue ba-dum-tisssss

I'd say 'August 32 on Earth' and 'Maelstrom' are. I mean one of the characters in Maelstrom is a talking fish.

The general act of film processing wasn't any different to have made a difference and generally doesn't work that way. There are ways to carry out processing (push, pull, bleach bypassing, etc) but it wouldn't and still doesn't depend on "newer technology." You can develop film in your bathroom if you wanted to.

The films look different because of how they were shot. It's all stylistic. Different lenses really played a part here. I find both films beautiful in their own way but of course apples and oranges.

Bit of a long shot, but I guess I'll ask - anyone here get an Australian copy of this? I'm trying to work out whether the standard Blu included in the Aussie copy is actually the remastered disc or not.

The back cover of the Australian edition states the BD features a PCM 5.1 track, suggesting it's just the old disc recycled here, but it wouldn't be the first time Village Roadshow has locally gotten the specs wrong on a WB release here.

Any help would be much appreciated.

It's the remastered BD. Roadshow are certainly notorious for bungling back-cover specs, it's another one of their copy-n-paste specials.

I still remember grabbing their Mad Max trilogy pack several years back with Dolby Digital 5.1 listed on the audio details for Mad Max 2. Figured I'd have to track down a new US disc at some point, but when I got the set home I was pleasantly surprised to discover the included disc actually had the new lossless track.

Ah yeah that one.. mine has correct specs on the back funnily enough, there's also a standalone version with the same incorrect audio specs. Mine also has the title The Road Warrior, it doesn't say Mad Max 2 anywhere. Oddly enough other than that it pretty much copies the layout from the original lossy-audio release, while the one with the wrong specs on the back has a completely different cover and disc label (plain black as opposed to the picture of Mel Gibson from the front cover).

Question

I watched THE SHINING on 4K UHD Blu-ray last night, and something strange happened. The last two times I watched the UHD disc of the film, it played perfectly fine. Last night, however, it started pausing by itself (first, when Tony Burton walks into the gas station and wipes his feet, and the second time was when Shelley Duvall reads what Jack Nicholson typed over and over). 4K Blu-rays that work perfectly fine DON’T just become defective, do they?

Did you check the disc surface? It's either that or your player was randomly hiccuping. These things do happen sometimes.

I looked at the disc surface, and the only thing there was a microscopic piece of dust. But that shouldn’t be a problem, right?

A bit of a dust could cause minor issues, UHD data is quite small and sensitive. Always pays to wipe off any dust or debris on the disc before playback. Did you try switching the player off, rebooting and playing the same scene again?

I just rewound it; I didn’t reboot the player. Maybe the disc should be cleaned.

I'd recommend picking up a microfiber cloth from an optometrist, the ones used to clean eyeglasses. Those do an excellent job of keeping discs clean without being too rough or harsh.

I have had the exact same issues on a perfectly clean disc. It is not you, it's a manufacturing error. Replacement is your only option.

I watched my 4K 2 days ago and had zero playback issues.
