Open the damn thing! This is as definitive as it gets.

If you haven't seen it then what are you upgrading from lol.

Just buy the bog standard blu ray. For a first time viewer, you're not going to get much more out of a 4k release than you would a standard blu ray

Maybe not a life-changing upgrade between the two but why not snag the UHD release? Its the superior version.

Even my least favorites (Halloween 5 and Resurrection) are enjoyable to me because, even though there are some ridiculous things about them, they have elements that remind me of the original, so I can appreciate them to some degree.

What matters most to me about the series is the lack of explanation for Michael’s behavior, the ambiguity regarding his supernatural quality, and the atmosphere. Even though Halloween 6 demystifies him (way more in the producer’s cut), the atmosphere and fall time feeling of that movie is so good that it’s one of my favorites.
I haven't fully decided how I think about part 6.

It's been so long since I've seen it, but my memory tells me that is a mix of a classic feel and the cult elements. Leaving the movie feeling very uneven.

I haven't watched the producers cut.

Problem that Donald is not well by this point, and Paul Rudd isn't very good.

There is nobody that can really carry the movie hers.

Here here.

While I have fond memories of seeing the original theatrical run Halloween as a teenager (at a rundown single screen theater) back in the day, there's no need for another dip as I'm perfectly happy with the LG release which I picked up for around $15.

The projection bulb back in 78 was most likely well past its due date so the lack of brightness gives me those original feels.

It will be the superior version yes.. Dropping 30 dollars on a movie you don't even know if you'll like is extreme. I'd say check it out on Netflix then decide if you want a superior version in your collection. That way if you don't like it then you haven't wasted 30 dollars just because

To me that's the most likely scenario. Shout has a history of doing this before. One of the more egregious instances was on The Thing where all the actors looked thinner as a result.

The 2018 release of Halloween looks to me to have the proper proportions but some some cropping present instead of being stretched outwards. In contrast the Halloween release by SC looks stretched. I know some users insist it's not visible, but to me it's very visible. If you've seen the movie many times and have ocd tendencies it should jump at you that Jamie Lee Curtis' face shouldn't look that round.

When some real reviews drop we'll find out if Shout got it right or not. This is a case where I'll be more than happy to be proven wrong as I'd like these to be the definite releases of these films. I'm just still apprehensive because we're dealing with a company that's made these mistakes before.

Amazon saying I should see it on the 5th. Some mediocre compression seems to have tossed out a bit of detail but as they started from OCN it's basically a wash compared to lionsgate. I like the color though and hopefully better exposure when appropriate( e.g daytime should look like daytime)

Is there an old master/home video release that’s generally regarded as having the correct AR to compare 2021’s geometry to?

My gosh, so we aren't sure yet then?

Just cancelled my preorder on Amazon for now. I'll wait for absolute confirmation that Shout didn't go around stretching the picture. I remember complaints about some of their other releases having geometrical stretching in one direction or other.

I'd rather have the old 2018 with minor cropping in the frame and proper geometrical values than something stretched imo. On top of it all the 2018 disc was pretty good I thought. If it turns out Shout got it right and the old one was wrong I'll get the new one in a second.

Without having read ANYthing negative about the compression, I simply enjoyed the hell out of seeing one of my all-time favorite flicks (Top Five, for me!) scanned from the OCN on my 92-inch projection screen. Looked like film and glorious grain to my eyes.
Same. It looks fantastic. I can't believe that this ultra-low-budget 40+ year old movie looks so spectacular.

The vast majority of people who actually have this release have said it was stellar, the color is right, the picture is gorgeous - then one guy posts a couple of screenshots that don't even show the DolbyVision version, and suddenly like some virus, folks jump out of the woodwork and have determined this is some fly by night crap release. And all this "geometry" nonsense? Based on one site's dubious screenshots - nothing anyone here who actually has the disc has said.

It's kind of unbelievable how this forum works. Well, actually it's not - this is how social media is unfortunately - it's just that this site wasn't always this way, it's just sad that this is how it works here now, too. Might as well just "discuss" things on Facebook, same of late.

Some of us project and Dolby Vision doesn't matter to us. I'd rather have a rock solid HDR10 presentation.

Yeah - fair enough. Chances are he'll like it and he can recover a good chunk of the costs too with the sale of the disc and digital code. But, I hear ya.

It actually looks like all five covers match up if you place them side-to-side…

Halloween was filmed in Panavision Widescreen (2.39:1). This is the correct aspect ratio for the film. Halloween II and III also used the same equipment and the same aspect ratio, so all three new 4K releases have that part correct.
