The average person unfortunately has no clue what 35mm film's true capabilities are for resolution and color reproduction. We have a preconceived notion that because a film is OLD, it will look lousy. This common misconception is largely because the hideously inferior older transfers we've seen have been utter abominations, not the the underlying film source itself. It's utterly SHOCKING what absolute rubbish transfers we've been sold by the studios over the years, on different formats in the past. Astoundingly ridiculous, nearly unwatchable, in some cases, if you were to compare to the actual film prints. I had very little experience with film in my early years, and had no idea what sort of stunning quality was available from 35mm or even 16mm. Like many, I thought the source material or filming techniques used for some early films must have been so poor and/or budgets so low that the films would never look even reasonably decent on a home video format. Boy, was I clueless.

The films that really brought it home to me were Zombie (1979), Pumpkinhead (1988), Don't Look Now (1973), Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (1974), and I Spit On Your Grave (1978). The colors and textures and fine detail on some of these rich, beautiful films can be quite stunning. Why these particular films? Because I had previously owned such abysmal copies of these specific films on older formats that I truly believed what I was seeing had to be films with lousy source material. Today, new 4k scans and the 4k uhd format especially have literally pulled the wool off of our eyes as consumers. It actually made me mad when I realized how outrageously, deliberately poor many of my older transfers were, that I'd paid good money for, and had suffered with for years on end, especially by the time we'd arrived at the DVD era where such abysmal transfers were by then nothing but inexcusable cash-grabs of the lowest order.

Halloween KILLZ will finally reveal that all along, Michael has been none other than a life-sized NECA figure. It's why he's "un-kill-able". This cover art is astoundingly accurate in that regard. He's not a ghost, or a zombie, or a demon. He's not Laurie's brother. He's.....NECA. It's the latest DGG plot twist, and it explains EVERYTHING. Deal with it, fan base.

I like the art of the first one. I don't love it but I think its nice. Just not fitting as the main art but hey whatever. The second is bad though.

Only ordered first one now as Im in the middle of moving and Im trying to keep ordering to minimum but I do wanna see the differences between this and LG asap. And Im a Carpenter fan so there's that.

I think if you are a fan of special features/extras, the upgrade is more than minimal, from the limited screenshots of the 4K disc we've seen (which aren't all totally accurate) it seems like this is most likely a nice visual upgrade (sans encoding error). The audio (while not top notch) is 100 times better than the LG 4Ks limited options. In terms of compression, I think those of us who worry about that kind of thing knew it was going to have some blocking from the moment we knew it was a Shout release.

If you are waiting to open it and see which one you want, make a decision based on what you know about extras/audio now, then for video transfer differences wait for caps-a-holic to post caps and decide from there. At least that's wait I'd do in your case.

The film is classic, watch it as soon as you can!

None of this is true. The Modern theatre standard is Pee Pee Poo Poo. This is very un-2021 of a Wizard such as you.

Yeah the compression is not great in the screens I posted (though keep in mind that the screens I posted only represent 3 frames of the whole movie), but it's still a large upgrade in pretty much every other area! Look at the screens that Rusty100 posted, they look pretty great!

The vast majority of people who actually have this release have said it was stellar, the color is right, the picture is gorgeous - then one guy posts a couple of screenshots that don't even show the DolbyVision version, and suddenly like some virus, folks jump out of the woodwork and have determined this is some fly by night crap release. And all this "geometry" nonsense? Based on one site's dubious screenshots - nothing anyone here who actually has the disc has said.
It does look fantastic! I didn't offer any judgements on anything aside from the compression in my original post because I hadn't actually watched it yet, but now that I have I am very satisfied with this release. I'm not really sure about the geometry stuff either, so far to me it sounds like the old release was the problematic one in that regard. Even if this one is slightly stretched (not really convinced of that), it's so minuscule that I don't really care lol

I don't know how I missed this before now. I'd better go check for this new standard on the cover art for 3:10 to Yuma, Oblivion, the Bourne Identity, and Expendables 3 4k uhd's........

They really missed out on a fun little bonus there, with different characters on each cover. It might have looked you you were selecting a character in a video game, but it would have been neat.

Hol up there bro; Bourne Identity hasn't even been released on UHD. It was last put out on Betamax 42 years ago. Check yourself!

After hearing alot of this back and forth I'm gonna take this opportunity to put my thoughts forward on DV and some other forms of HDR. As it seems some have reported issues when watching the new disc without DV on. And honestly I'm tired of studios using it to hide compression flaws in their discs. As the most egregious examples I've seen personally would be the New Trek films on 4k as the bitrate dips so low at times banding issues crops up. And I'm talking about dvd levels of dipping or a bit above dvd in terms of the mbps. So im curious to see if that is the culprit here as well.

But I will say I did managed to get H2 from best buy early in the week and compared it to the Universal disc which I feel is superior to the original shout as it's always looked overly soft. Of which I think is due to compression but also alot of DNR. Now when comparing the most recent and it's bluray together I didn't get the impression that it was as the HDD review stated about it being so much softer than the 4k. Though I chose a few scenes to examine and didn't watch the full thing as I'm waiting on getting the first film for that. But oddly enough the grain structure seems to be more apparent on the new 2021 BD. Whereas the 4k looks too clean and scrubbed of grain at times.

While the Universal disc has a very grainy image to it. I'm curious if the film also had a sharpness filter applied to it at times. But that might just be me and my skimming between the releases.

Overall I'm still curious to get the shout disc and compare it to the lionsgate disc. But right now I'm not really happy with the Halloween 2 disc as it's the one along with 3 I was looking to see the most improvement with. As the previous shout discs are kind of garbage compared to the visuals on their respective universal offerings. As it reminds me of how overly smoothed out the grain and details are at times the original shout discs were compared those universal discs.

Again this is just me and my opinion but I'm gonna dive back a bit more into the film later and check out some more scenes but to me it's not a good sign so far from the scenes I chose. As I focussed on the exam of the burnt corpse as it's a relatively well lit scene followed by the subsequent scene at the Myers' house that takes place outside in the evening.
