And there's not even any direct scale comparison between the two

There's another storyboard where you can see the asteroid fireball debris being deflected by the shields.

Finished what I could find of the changes between the theatrical version and TDE:

www.startrekviscomp.com

They're dozens/hundreds more changes that I wasn't able to spot, but it's a good overview of them. I'm currently going through articles and such to add more to the captions.

We can only assume the 4K will have even more, even more subtle changes/fixes. I look forward to not being able to spot them either!

Well, good thing the shot didn't work because they specify in dialogue that both the shields ("forcefields") and navigational deflector were inoperative.

They’re the same link. Google domain forwarding is being flakey recently

I actually took it upon myself to do some changes of my own. Since the Director's Edition restores the shot of Kirk using his wrist communicator, I wanted to see if I could edit the sound to make it sound like Uhura was calling Kirk directly instead of through the Officer's Lounge speakers. The I made:

1. Added an 'Incoming Call' chirp
2. Lowered Uhura's volume
3. Removed "Officer's Lounge" from the dialogue

One of my favorite nitpick comments I got from sharing this edit was "It's important that we know that they're in the officer's lounge". Yeah. Just like it's important that we know that one of the Klingon ships was called Amar.

He does use the watch when asking Uhuru to punch up the old Nasa transmit code from within Vger. Not sure if that is what you meant by restoring the use of the watch.

In the theatrical cut, Kirk stands there staring at McCoy, Uhura calls over the intercom and he just turns and walks away. TDE uses an alternate take where he answers her via the watch.

The purpose of this edit was to fix an issue that I felt was introduced when Kirk uses his wrist communicator in both the Special Longer Version and in the Director's Edition. Since the Theatrical Cut did not use the take where Kirk uses his communicator they still needed to have Uhura contact Kirk to convey that the Enterprise was close to the Cloud. So having her use a PA system for the whole room worked for that edit, but not so much in the other versions.

By showing Kirk raising his communicator closer to his head, it visually conveys that he did that so he could hear Uhura more clearly and be ready to respond when she was finished. I felt that if Kirk is focusing on his communicator, than Uhura's dialogue should be coming from that and not the PA system.

And I did try to grab the 'incoming call' buzz that the Director's Edition added during the film's climax, but Jerry Goldsmith's score got in the way so I cobbled up my own.

Default Star Trek The Motion Picture Director's Cut ?

Is there EVER going to be a blu ray release of the Director's cut of the first movie ? I find conflicting reports all over the place. There is a 4K set as well as a single release of the first movie, but the reviews of the single release say it's not the director's cut. Nor does the review of the 4K set here on blu-ray.com say that it's the director's cut.

The directors cut in 4k is being worked on right now. It will be finished at some point next year. It will be exclusive on paramount+ for an unknown period of time before going to 4k and blu ray.

Cool. As long as it comes to blu ray, that's great. Couldn't care less about 4K, though.

You might if certain circumstances occur between now and it's release date. Could find yourself upgrading to a 4K set up with a 4K UHD player. Don't shut off the potential so easily!

If they're not into 4K and you're not into 4K, what are you two even doing here in this 4K thread?

Spottedfeather (previous page) had started a new thread asking about this, I and a couple of others replied, then the thread was merged into this one.

That's sort of how Warner Bros. did the Zack Snyder's Justice League; it was made for HBO Max, but a physical media version is also available.

I don't follow these things all that closely (I should, though), but I think the wait time for a physical release of ZSJL was brief. Wasn't it?

Anyhoo...yes. Paramount is not going to announce a physical release of this much-awaited Director's Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. You're on target about that!

No, I don't want 4K. I don't like the look of it. It's way too dark, desaturated, and washed out. It's just...gross is the best way that I can put it. Not to mention that there is just no way that I'd ever be able to afford a 4K tv. I couldn't even afford a normal HD tv, if I had to replace the one I have. The only reason that I own anything 4K is because they were included in collector's sets I have like Goonies, RAD, and Willy Wonka.
