Imagine being the kind of person who sees one negative review and then immediately cancels a pre-order lol
Sure, Films At Home is a nice guy but he's absolutely not an "insider" by any stretch of the imagination. I too know at least one person currently working at almost every major studio's home video department. Occasionally I'm fortunate enough to receive early review copies from said people and even more occasionally am privy to tidbits about what may or may not be coming down the pipeline re: future releases. None of that necessarily make me a bona-fide insider either, just fortunate. Sifting through the staggering amount of blind praise in the comments section of that "pro review" video for IB 4K is honestly a bit depressing. Why think for yourself when the nice man on YouTube can do that for you? Be sure to like and subscribe. ![]() Last edited by TravisTylerBlack; 10-06-2021 at 12:13 AM. |

To me Quantum of Solace on BD is a good example of how a modern film can look. There is grain, it's very fine and tight and of course the way film picks up highlights and color is something special IMHO which gives it that extra filmic touch which is why the format persists even today. Hidden Figures is an example where it was frankly a waste of time to shoot on 35mm let alone 16mm when it has basically no visible grain at all and the brief 16mm opening sequence had a very restrained, sticky layer of it. I can confirm the BD looks as the DCP did. If you shoot on film these days especially, why would you not let the film look like film instead of beating it to death with DNR? If you don't want that look you might as well go digital. Back to IG, I wasn't expecting a 4K re-scan anyway. Sure it would be welcome but let's be realistic and as long as it looks good I'm just happy it's on UHD at all instead of imprisoned on some heavily compressed 4K stream/download with lossy audio that I'll probably never watch. |

If it’s from a 2K DI, then that’s really disappointing and a real shame given how gorgeous 4K scans of 21st century 35mm films look. IB also has enough of fan base to make a fresh scan worth the trouble and cost.
I don’t understand why Tarantino doesn’t have higher standards for home releases of his work. It’s even more baffling given that he’s one of the few and highest profile holdouts who refuses to abandon celluloid. It will be even more depressing once 4K remasters of Resevoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown are released. |

I'm sure if Basterds had been grain-wiped and given a "light cannon" HDR grade that both Bill and FAH would be drooling all over this release. As it stands I can't wait to check this disc out for myself. |

It was finished on a 2K DI, it was always likely to be upscaled as such. So I don't quite understand why so many people are joining in with the Hunt at Home groupthink and piling on this one when there are so many other 2K upscales out there that don't come in for the same scrutiny. Yes, I understand that this is Tarantino we're talking about but from the Kill Bills onwards he's finished all of his movies on DIs apart from Hateful 8 which was fully photochemical. Yes, the man who lives and breathes film still has to finish out to DIs because despite his reputation his films are not expensive blockbusters a la Nolan's so he has to acquiesce to certain demands as part of having a much smaller budget. And part of the rights holders not wanting to spend lots of money to rebuild his 2K shows in 4K (not that they do it a lot for anyone else's movies anyway) is because the rights will end up with Tarantino eventually, maybe when that happens he'll rebuild it himself on film. Still, I wonder what the people who usually complain about this place being full of hand-wringing nit-picking types think of fan-favourite commentators like Hunt at Home shitting on this UHD release and causing swathes of cancelled pre-orders? Or is it that, as "pros", they're allowed to negatively comment on UHDs while the rest of us are not? Discuss. |

Even Once Upon a time In Hollywood is not impressive to me really in 4K. Not doing a 4K scan for any of his movies is a travesty. I can already picture many soft scenes that wouldn't look any different if you were streaming it on Amazon Prime.

And as much as everyone here likes to dump on Bill Hunt, he hasn't publicly made any comments about the quality of the Basterds UHD on his website or twitter. So at least wait until he actually says something to get irritated with his opinion instead of taking the bait of someone posting here.
