Conventional Chinese moviemaking with lots of side plots that can be a bit confusing to piece together, but thoroughly enjoyable story and stunning 3D.

It gets 4.5/5 in my personal database, only because I find it too hard to rank based on 3D alone. Otherwise I’d have tons of 5/5 films with only a handful of those being ones that I’d want to see over and over. Case in point …

Also watched Thunder and the House of Magic. Amazing 3D with loads of pop-outs, stunning depth and basically the whole thing looking like a 3D diorama playing out inside the room. 5/5 for 3D.

But for me … this was a chore to get through. Hubby stopped watching 10 minutes in. It’s the first (and last) animated kid’s film in my collection and gets 1/5 in my rankings. I may pull it out again to show a guest what 3D looks like, but doubt it, since there are so many other eye-popping examples with adult themes. Ended up watching the whole thing basically to see colorful 3D shapes moving in and out of the screen. But I’m biased and just don’t like films for the kiddos. Others place this in their top 10, which is totally understandable. But this grumpy old grizzly and cartoon cats don’t mix.
Wow. I can’t remotely relate. So glad to be eternally young at heart.

I'm a big fan of stop-frame animation in general, have been since i saw tNBC back in 1993, also from Burton. 3D as a gimmick wears thin, so this film used it wisely to add depth...

I agree about Nightmare, but 3D never wears thin, not on this thread.

Perhaps the reason the format died on it's arse was that film-makers (aside from using cheap conversions) kept shoving out the technique as an ultra-naff CominAtch!TM gimmick that audiences wore thin of. Natural 3D really can't be beat, as evidenced by the plethora of David Attenborough documentaries from Sky, but it was a style that burnt itself out rapidly within a few years with shoving objects in the face of the audience...

My stumbling block with Thunder was just the dialog, plot line, etc. being geared to younger kids. I certainly appreciate animation as an art form though, especially when nostalgia enters the mix. Love the Woody Woodpecker & Casper extras on the 3DFA restorations. (Even own a collection of all the episodes of Jonny Quest, which auto-convert great to 3D BTW.) Tim Burton’s animated films also have plenty of adult themes and artistry to pull me in. But as a rule, I prefer live-action car chases, sci-fi spaceships, monsters & stuff blowing up. Freakin love the animated War of the Worlds: Goliath in 3D. But everybody’s tastes are different, and it’s all cool.

I agree !, I’m a lot happier when there’s good depth and pop out for 3D, and as for animation I’m a huge fan and probably nearly half my 3D collection is animated.

I recently watched:

Strong 3D for both. I recommend the entire franchise. The first 3 films which are 2D only are great. Part 5 has callbacks to the earlier films so you'd want to have seen them all. Assuming you can stomach the graphic violence.

Since its October, im trying to just watch horror movies.

Made the wife watch Fright Night 3D and Poltergeist 3D

We really enjoyed Fright Night.
I remember liking Poltergeist a lot when I saw it the first time, but this time? It wasnt very good. The 3D was good, but the movie itself was not scary and not very fun . ah well. When the clown dolls were getting up and running i think it was supposed to be scary , but it was just funny

'The Final Destination' (Part 4). I had to buy it a couple of times before I got the right version.

It has caught out a few people. I have never been able to see Anaglyph 3D myself.

Just again watched toy story 1 and 2.

Great 3D, and that includes having watched both on the 3D video wizard. Might pop them into my living room system for a few minutes, not only to once more see how brilliant they are in true stereoscopic (now properly calibrated with Spears and Munsel) but to also see how much the limited 3D video wizard did justice to each.

Of course the stories are wonderful to watch and I'll be putting on three and four later on this week.

Are we talking great 3D, or great 3D for Pixar?

Hi waverboy

I'll let you know after I put the discs into my main system.

Meanwhile they did look good on the 3D video wizard device.
