I'm anxious for Marnie, Earthsea, Ocean Waves, and Only Yesterday in steelbooks. Marnie is my #1 favorite Ghibli movie. Castle of Cagliostro should be releasing as a steelbook, too.

Then theoretically they could do Ronja as well, plus the one Miyazaki is currently working on.

I'd love a steel of Mary and the Witch's Flower but I'm sure all parties involved would prefer it not be marketed as a Ghibli title, since it isn't one.

My vote for next pairing is Pom Poko and Earthsea, for what it's worth.
GKIDS is showing Pom Poko and From Up on Poppy Hill as the most recent ones, supposedly released Sept 21 (yesterday), with a steelbook treatment.

I hope if they release Ocean Waves again, they record an English Dub track. It's the only Ghibli film without one.

Porco Rosso is releasing this month, not Pom Poko.

Oh, I see my order for Porco Rosso, Poppy Hill, and Perfect Blue steelbooks, along with City Hunter Season 2 Part 2, has shipped from Rightstuf.

We need some Isao Takahata titles. Tale of The Princess Kaguya and Pom Poko would be nice.

Probably unlikely, but it would be interesting if they also did their Miyazaki doc in a similar SteelBook release. I’m assuming if they only do these 7, that one wave will likely be 3 instead of the usual 2.

Why would you expect that? Discotek have the license for The Castle of Cagliostro, and they have yet to do a SteelBook. The only rights for the film GKIDS’ have are theatrical.

Go to bed already, lol - I already deleted my post after I realized that Cagliostro was a Discotek title. Damn, so the steelbook sets will never be complete. At least Sentai was good enough to release Grave of the Fireflies in a matching steelbook. I doubt Discotek would ever do that.

I’d say it’s possible they would license it out for a limited release to GKids, they did to Disney after all for the Miyazaki box. As long as their excellent extras aren’t ported, and it’s only a Blu-ray/DVD set like the other SteelBooks, their would still be great value in the Discotek releases between extras or the 4K version. Plus as a Lupin collector I like having the Discotek release as it matches their others quite nicely, I can’t say that about the GKids Lupin III: The First releases which all stand out in a Lupin lineup.

Would be nice if Discotek sometime did them for titles that could justify the sales, which Castle of Cagliostro certainly would qualify for as it's among their all-time best-selling titles for obvious reasons.

Is it possible for the Universal-distributed films (The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Only Yesterday, When Marnie Was There, Ocean Waves) to get SteelBook releases? Either from Universal or Shout! Factory?
I know the regular Universal releases are still on-print but who knows how long Universal's licences to the GKIDS films will last.

It's all just a waiting game. Other than Cagliostro, unfortunately, I imagine we'll see the rest eventually. I hadn't thought of the documentary but that's a cool idea and I hope someone goes through with it.

However, if they take it really slowly with the remaining releases, they could wait to do the last two until the current one, I think it's called "How Do You Live?" is released, and then do a final set of two with that.

Which release had the typo in the form of a role attributed to the wrong actor?

I think Ocean Waves is the only Ghibli film without an English dub yet.

Well crap, $100 just for the Earwig silhouette set, with international shipping. Plus you have to add a large magazine to the amazon order for plank-in-the-box shipping. I assume this will be in a magnetic digipak matching the rest of the silhouette series...

I do have a few other JP Blu-ray Box sets I could add to my order to try to avoid them shipping in just a bag.

Heavily disappointed that they didn't do a 4K UHD of this nor did they have the theatrical Dolby Atmos remix.

I really hope this will be just like what happened when Ponyo was first released on home video where the Blu-ray was released five months after the initial DVD and VHS release (Ponyo was the last mainstream film to ever be given a wide VHS release, with later releases being niche projects like Jimmy ScreamerClauz's Where the Dead Go to Die, or Scott "the Woz" Wozniak's The Internet and You) and that Earwig and the Witch would later get a 4K UHD release in a few months.

For My Neighbors the Yamadas, they released the DVD and VHS at the exact same day but with no LaserDisc release. Which is strange since The Phantom Menace got a LaserDisc release around the same time, and LaserDisc was still in vogue in Japan at the time.

If Earwig and the Witch's 4K UHD release is a belated one, I am hoping we would get it by Summer 2022.

Also, disappointed that Whisper of the Heart, Tales from Earthsea, and From Up on Poppy Hill did not get upgraded MGVC like the other films. The early Miyazaki and Takahata Blu-rays were upgraded with MGVC on their box sets.
At least Earwig has it and Arrietty was upgraded.
Now I just hope Panasonic (makers of MGVC) would make 12-bit OLED panels like Samsung so that the true 12-bit colour potential of MGVC and Dolby Vision would be utilised. I also hope Panasonic supports IMAX Enhanced on their TVs as well but that's a story for another day.
MGVC will probably look amazing in 12-bit panels. MGVC already looks good in 10-bit panels even if it's not as mindblowing as Dolby Vision or HDR10.

I thought you needed to have a MGVC capable Panasonic Blu-ray player as well to be able to actually view MGVC discs, just as you need both a supporting player and display for 3D and 4K. The only few Panasonic MGVC capable players I was aware of were restricted to distribution in Japan. Unless they've expanded that capability elsewhere in the world since 5 or 10 years ago, or if Dolby-vison players are compatable with MGVC now.
