They can be extremely brutal in their execution and graphic depictions, really effective at times at making Myers into a devastating slasher (not the boogeyman, though). They're also so crass and deliberately trashy that they regularly pull themselves down a few rungs as they progress, and then something occurs in the film to start redeeming the proceedings. They're all over the place in their tone and style. But for certain, they are extremely nihilistic, violent alternate visions. Myers is hyper-aggressive, yet still stealth and very focused. And what impressed me the most has been their quality of execution in cinematography. Some of his lighting choices, angles of capture, etc, are top-shelf. I think his chosen film crew did an amazing job capturing his warped vision. These really are extreme versions, and contain a very polarizing prequel segment, but they actually stick closely enough to the general plots of H1 and H2 to remain recognizable as "remakes". I certainly appreciate the fact that notwithstanding my feelings about portions of the content, they contain some significant film art in their own right and DO deserve a 4k uhd release in future. I wouldn't even begin to pretend to try to compare them to the original films, though. It's apples and cacti, in terms of stye and script, so I find myself having to judge them on their own volatile merits. They both also seem a bit long as well, could've had some tighter editing, and I DO prefer the cleaner, shorter theatrical versions of both.

One thing I do think Zombie got wrong was the "feel" he achieved in terms of a timeline and creating his settings. From the scripts and the casting, the dialogue, the characters' slang, actions, mannerisms, opinions, habits, the parties that are going on, the elementary school itself, the characters' wardrobes, etc.....his films both feel very much like they're taking place in the 1998 to 2005 era, NOT at all 1958 or 1978. Even despite the fact that H2 is supposed to be 20 years later, it still feels like young Michael gets institutionalized in 2000 and emerges as a full-grown adult, into the same exact environment, for H2. It's a bit odd in that respect. People didn't talk, dress, speak, or act as these characters do, back in the 50's, 60's, 70's or even the 80's.
That's something I've never had an issue with is just treating the Rob Zombie films as their own thing. I don't like either of those movies, but nor do I have any intense hatred for them and frankly I hate H6 more. I'm more just indifferent to Zombie's films. From the moment he was announced as director, I knew the movies wouldn't be for me and I don't begrudge anyone for it, I'm just not in the target audience for his films.

That said, there are a few things I do like about them, even through I've only watched them once each (director's cuts only). As you mentioned the movies both look great on a technical level. They were both photographed on film so they'd undoutedly look great in 4K. Brad Dourif and Malcolm McDowell are both great, as they are in everything. Some of the stuff with Loomis and Michael at the asylum is interesting and I love the dinner scene in the second film where Dourif is explaning "Paint Your Wagon" to Scout Taylor-Compton and Danielle Harris.

It's something I appreciate about this series; none of these films are absolutely rotten to the core. There's something to appreciate in every one of them, even the lesser ones. Even with Halloween Kills there were still a few things I liked that kept it from being a total waste. A disppoinment, but not a waste. I literally just finished watching the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" remake for the first time, now that is a movie that I would say is pretty rotten

I actually quite enjoy Rob Zombie's Halloween 1 and 2 but see them as a completely separate reboot. It's an alternate take on the Myers story and for that, I respect them.

It would be like comparing Dawn of the Dead to Dawn of the Dead. You can but I'm not going to. It's not really fair.

I also don't include Halloween III. It's a stand-alone movie. I love it but it's not fair to include alongside the others.

I'll go:

1. Halloween (78)
2. Halloween II
3. Halloween (2018)
4. Halloween IV
5. Halloween Kills
6. Halloween V
7. Halloween 6
8. Halloween H20
9. Halloween Resurrection

Combined Rankings (I don't agree with this but...)

1. Halloween (78)
2. Halloween II (81)
3. Halloween III
4. Halloween (2018)
5. Halloween 4
6. Halloween (2007)
7. Halloween II (2009)
8. Halloween Kills
9. Halloween 5
10. Halloween 6
11. Halloween H20
12. Halloween Resurrection

Jay, if you intended to write "I STILL Enjoy 4 and H20 though, despite the horrible mask and bad score of H20" referring to yourself rather than telling me to go enjoy them, then I misread your original post and responded unfairly and excessively, for which I do apologize.

I literally just did the exact same thing last week, and have to say I totally agree. I actually like most of the controversial, much-maligned reboots and even new horror releases that Platinum Dunes puts out, despite their cynical, nihilistic, brutal approach and their typically unlikable, hollow/shallow characters. But in this instance, I was just left empty, without even straws to clutch at. The entire production was unimpressive, especially with the way-off look, sound and actions of revisionist Freddy, and the lousy special effects, to boot. It really went nowhere, for me. I guess just the word "insipid" nails it.

The first two are easily the worst of their respective series. JTM wins by default. 1989 was a bad year for horror.

Still my bad though.

No matter what comes with more future sequels, I'm still very glad this entire franchise continues to capture imaginations and excite fans enough to warrant new films and, more importantly, to feed new physical releases of ALL the films, good and bad. It's scary times right now, to see a disturbing share of new horror films, and films in general, NOT getting a 4k uhd release, and much worse yet, some not even getting a USA blu ray! In all honesty, I WILL buy H Kills to support the franchise, and the 4k uhd format. I feel like it's critical, especially if we want new films in the genre on disc to enjoy and critique in the near future.

I guess to be fair to the movie, it was a uniquely challanged production (relative to most of the other remakes from around that time). Almost immediately there was word from the set that the director and the producer's were feuding and the actors had stopped taking their direction. But still, a bad film is a bad film and if I had to rank the various remakes of classic horror series, I'd put this lower than both either Rob Zombie's Halloween and Friday the 13th '09. All three of those films were able to capture the vision of it's creators. Elm Street '10 didn't capture anything except my scorn.

Yeah the shortages suck too. Preordered Scream 4K from bullmoose, ended up buying the streaming version from iTunes. Still hoping my bullmoose order ships soon though.

Yes I'm waiting on the Scream 4k disc too, and I'm hoping the Underworld 4k set and Mad Max 4k set don't also suffer late releases and/or shortages as well. We're just three days out on the Underworld 4k box set release. I bought one set from Amazon, and one set from Blowitoutahere, just to hedge my bets, and still neither one has shipped.....

I wonder if del Toro's much-delayed "Antlers" production will even see a physical blu ray release, under frikkin' Disney.....I really wanna see that flick.

Why wouldn't it see a Blu-ray release? It's a new movie, it's del Toro, it's going to get a theatrical release eventually...of course it will get a Blu-ray.

The film is supposed to hit theaters next week, and yet I haven't seen any notice of a distributor for any physical releases announced, just digital releases.

When Underwater released under that label last year, there was no 4k release sadly, but at least Fox HE was already announced as the distro for future physical releases, weeks in advance.

Can't help but be paranoid of Disney when it comes to the dim future of physical media. Go look at the prices of all the prior Fox blu ray titles on Amazon and ebay....

You got me there. With that Tim Burton does have a story by, and based on the poem by him. Credits. So he did have more of a creative hand. I don't know the history of Antlers thought. So I don't know if it was one of Guillermo's endless projects he was attached to.

People knocking on Michael for being too violent? LOL at least he doesn't look like a goof the way he does in H4/H5. I love H4 but damn Michael looks dumb as hell in 90% of it. The shoulder pads, the mask. At least Michael is threatening in Halloween Kills.

Nah. There’s no way Halloween Kills is MILES better than H5. H5 a bad movie but it has some cheesy 80s campy charm and a couple nice moments of suspense. Kills has virtually no suspense and the script sucks. There are so many characters who try to sound like Loomis. Those lines work for Loomis but no one else. And the characters in Kills are probably the dumbest characters in the entire series. During my second watch I couldn’t believe how stupid they were. This is a problem with the script and the directing.

H5 was a rush job so of course it’s not very good. The ideas in H’18 and Kills were created over a period of years by mega Halloween fans and this is the best they could come up with. H’18 was decent and felt like an intelligently made film with a nice slow buildup, but Kills is just sloppy. It’s embarrassing how bad it is.

I really wanted to like Kills, but its flaws are so glaringly apparent. With H5 I can have fun with its goofiness and over-the-top performance by Donald Pleasence. There’s nothing like that in Kills. It’s just a collection of poorly put-together ideas that don’t really amount to anything.

While I won't say miles better, I do think Halloween Kills is better than 5. I do think it's the "Halloween 5" to Halloween 2018 though if that makes sense.

I'd much rather sit and watch Halloweens Kills again than to sit through H5 though. H5 is towards the bottom of the list for me.

I'm only gonna rank the classic films, but after watching these new 4K discs:

Halloween
Halloween II
Halloween 4
Halloween 6 (Theatrical/Producer's, doesn't matter)
Halloween 5
H20
Resurrection

Halloween III I'd say is in the same tier as the first two films, but it's not part of the Myers storyline so I don't see the point in saying it's better than X film. Not interested in the Zombie films or the new trilogy. I may move H20 up if I ever get to see a remastered disc.

Halloween (1978)
Halloween III: Season of the Witch

That's the order I rank them.
