But not the supposedly superior sub translation. I'm not a dub watcher, but that's the biggest reason I went for the collector's edition; I wanted to watch it with the better subtitle translation, which the standard edition doesn't have.

There are two sub tracks, the original translation used back with the original release of the show, and the new subtitles used by Netflix. I'm not familiar with the Netflix translation myself, but IIRC, it's supposedly blander than the original subs, with some odd phrasings (Third Child vs Third Children, for example) and different dialog in a key scene or two that change the implications or tone of what's being said. From what I've seen, the general consensus is that the original translation is significantly better.

And the Gkids release separates those two translations. So the Collector's Edition has two separate copies of the show, one set that uses the Netflix dub and Netflix subs, and one set that uses the classic dub and subtitles (hence the high disc count). The standard edition only includes the Netflix version discs, so even if you're watching the subs, that's the version you're stuck with. The only way to see the original translation is to get the Collector's or Ultimate Edition.

Worth noting that the translation got tweaked with each new release. You first had the 13 VHS tapes, the 8 DVD volumes, then finally the 7 Platinum DVD volumes. The series was originally translated by Kuni Kimura, with additional translation by Shoko Oono (who translated the Director's Cut) in later releases. Dan Kanemitsu is who translated the Netflix release. No idea if Shoko Oono's additional translation was first for the VHS release, the 8 singles, or the Platinum release because there's sadly no precision. Wish I had my hands on the 8 singles so I could go through the credits like I did with the Platinum singles (thanks to the Holiday Edition reusing those discs).

Does the "Additional Translation: Shoko Oono" credit first appear there on any of the volumes?

While you're at it, can you verify if these DVD easter eggs work on volumes 4-8?

I'm so confuse, i want to watch original japanese track , dont care for english dub, but i want a proper non netflix subtitles, original subtitles. So i cant buy standard?

I can only afford in my country weak ass currency. Damn seems cant own it on bluray.

The subtitle translations from the ADV Films and Manga DVDs are only on the Deluxe and Collector's Editions, yes. The standard has only the Netflix subtitles if you don't care about the dub situation.

I cancelled my x2 order for the Standard eds at Shout and ordered a CE ed from them.

I also placed an order for a Standard ed at Amz.ca when the price dropped (for about a DAY) to $39Cdn (main reason I cancelled the Shout double order).

So, it looks like I've got one copy of each ed in the pipe.
The CE will go to my Girls, of course but only after I've watched it with the ADV subs first, heh.

The UE is from AtA so R-B, hence they can't play it (yet).

Rightstuf adds insurance automatically, you have to manually uncheck it. Glad you got your order in time.
