another 'Big Show' opening at Alamo's in-town Washington DC / Rhode Island Ave. location opening next month ~ woohoo !! (Woodbridge's said screen is fantastic and word is that this one is at least 90 feet in width, and with Dolby Atmos of course)

It says first come first served. I assume that means you show up and get in line at the posted time and place.

I'll bet you'd have to get in line 2 hours or more before the announced showtime.

Given the choice, would it be better to watch a movie with laser on a lieMax screen or digital on a full-size IMAX screen?

so I had a sneak 'private' peek of the Big Show auditorium the day of it's opening (last month), I have yet to see an actual movie there, but the auditorium is beautiful and unlike the Woodbridge location, the tables are like the ones at Showplace ICON The Boro where they can swing back and forward, keeping closer to one's chest, which is a good thing for something like say a hamburger which can drip. The screen is 66 feet wide and some 75 speakers for the Atmos setup.

I’ve seen both, for sure laser IMAX. The smaller laser theater have incredible image quality, plus you get the upgraded sound system.

And digital actually can’t even fill a large IMAX screen. When Lincoln Square was digital, there was about 20 feet of black bars on the sides between the left and right of the screen

I forgot to ask, anyone see Spiderman at Udvar ? Does it switch aspect ratio taking advantage of the screen at that location? I have only seen it twice in RPX (Gainesville) and once in Cinemark xD. I have yet to see it at the Manassas Regal IMAX.

Oh btw...Matrix was not presented at all in full frame IMAX. Blah.

Some scenes would have looked great in IMAX.

The only scene I think would look nuts in IMAX would be the Mirror Dimension sequence in Spiderman.

There is no "switching" aspect ratio in Spider-Man. The whole movie is in the bigger format

this is not actually specific news but more commentary, but for us in the DC area region, AMC is taking over the former Arclight Montgomery Mall space, I would assume the large screen will be Dolby Cinema (please), but I gather the second Atmos auditorium won't be. I wish they'd hurry up and get this location up and running, I'm tired of having to go to Tyson's Corner constantly.

it's kinda funny that the IMAX presentation and sound mix of 'The Beatles: Get Back - The Rooftop Concert' veered towards the loud side, appropriately so, as some on the day said it was disruptive and disturbing the peace (LOL) - looked great, and sounded great on the IMAX laser system at Tyson's Corner yesterday afternoon.

I got the chance to finally see a movie on 'The Big Show' screen Alamo Drafthouse Bryant Street location, and I thought the image looked great, even though the film's ("After Yang") color scheme tended to a monochromatic nature. While the mix was not Atmos, the 7.1 sound design was exceptional ~ I'll be definitely wanting to come back here and hear an actual Dolby Atmos mixed movie.

Onto AMC's reopened Montgomery Mall location ~ well it's too early to say what the hell is going on, since for 'The Batman' opening this week, neither two of the supposed prior Dolby Atmos screens are presenting the movie as such; even though the manager was clearly talking out his butt and just stating excuses, nonsensical rambling that made zero sense. Even in it's prior Arclight setup all the screens were 7.1 surround sound, AMC downgraded them all to 5.1 ~ [face palm]

That's great to hear about the Bryant Street Alamo, I've been meaning to check that out! How would you say the Big Show screen size compares to something like the Dolby or IMAX screens at Tysons? I'm sure it's a bit different because I'm assuming it's a scope screen (which I love, I wish more new screens were scope with masking installed, Alamo has been good with this).

I 'think' the we were seeing 'The Big Show' screen at it's horizontally masked 1.85 AR since 'After Yang' had scenes in scope, 4:3, and 1.85 - to me the Dolby and IMAX 'seem' taller, they are three stories in height, but I'll see what I can find out to the dimensions of said screen. Unmasked at 2.39 the screen is 68 feet wide
