I'd guess at this point it'll be a stroke of luck if anyone gets there as they receive/shelve a restock. I'll be near one anyways tomorrow and Saturday so will pop by but yes, I'm not optimistic either.

Looks like the sale will continue into at least December if not longer, according to a FOPP in Glasgow;

I used to go to this Fopp 3 or 4 times a year. Always spent a ton so it didn't feel so bad spending money on a train ticket or petrol/car parking.

The much missed (by me at least) Bristol branch is still a dusty, disused shell of a building.

That was my favourite shop to buy Blu-rays in. Such a shame.

Manchester Fopp have just tweeted that they've restocked a number of BFI sale titles, but also that some of them will be increasing in price from Monday:

Dunno why these (and other boutique label titles) are always £6 in B&M stores but £8+ online in sales. Are they subsidising to protect the high street ?

Truth be told, La Haine (and a few other titles) were included in that Fopp campaign in error, and the stock will be pulled. There will be a BFI Shop Xmas/Black Friday campaign.

Managed to grab the last La Haine on display in the Glasgow Fopp today after going almost every day this week to see if they got more in!

Went into Fopp Covent Garden in a rainy lunch hour today. As expected all price errors were removed. I did happily grab Cassavetes’ Faces for £6 and some others. Whoever wanted the booklet for How I Won The War - I noticed the copies in Fopp had the booklet.

I've picked up my reserved copied of La Haine at £6 today in Covent Garden, and the sales lady admitted that it's a price error and should probably be £15 although they've set it aside for me when the stocks come in this morning. I didn't get a text though.
I think that's what Fopp's tweet refers to.

Any idea which titles have gone back up in price? I’m after Tales from the hood, and Salaam Bombay, but can’t be bothered to schlep to Covent Garden if it’s all the newer titles that have been removed from the offer.

If anyone would be willing to pick up a few titles at a Fopp and send them them to me please PM me. I live near an HMV and can post things for free, so might be able to return the favour at some point!

What titles went back up in price?

I got the following earlier, Thursday I think, this week:

1) The Hirokazu Koreeda set (£25)
2) The River (£6)
3) Mademoiselle (£6)

I did check if they had any copies of La Haine but they'd sold out.

Delighted to grab a solitary copy of The Pawnbroker for £6 in Fopp Covent Garden today. Was startled it was still reduced.

Two BFI questions:

1. When did the booklets switch to first pressing only? I want to go through my want list and figure out which ones I need to prioritize buying.

2. Would someone tell me more about BFI Flipside? Are these mostly cult films?

I think it was around a couple years ago that BFI releases had a policy of first pressing only for booklets. In their Spring 2019 announcement, they included this statement "Beginning with these spring titles, our new releases will only include a booklet in the first pressing." The statement suggests that previous releases will continue to have booklets, or at least we can hope.

Flipside is IMO a sort of British New Wave focused label - a lot of the films are kitchen sink dramas/comedies, dramas/documentaries set in the seamy side of London life or arty British films. There may be exceptions (Schalken the Painter comes to mind), but this is the general trend.

These are all the current flipside releases in a nutshell (they seem to mainly cover a period between the 50's and the early 80's):

The BFI’s own blurb describes Flipside thusly:

Quote:
BFI Flipside is dedicated to rediscovering the margins of British film, reclaiming a space for forgotten movies and filmmakers who would otherwise be in danger of disappearing from our screens forever. It is a home for UK cinematic oddities, offering everything from exploitation documentaries to B-movies, countercultural curios and obscure classics.

If it's weird, British and forgotten, then it's Flipside.
That is a much more accurate description, IMO, than “British New Wave”, which is associated primarily with a particular look and style that flowered in the early 1960s. Flipside is much more wide-ranging than that.
