[Show spoiler]
The laserdisc for this film had liner notes which talked about the Coen's pre-production process for this film. One of the big things they bring up is how specific the Coen's wanted this film to look in terms of color.
To that end, they assembled a book of color swatches that were the equivalent of color storyboards. From scene to scene and act to act, they wanted to play up certain signature colors.

The LD and first DVD shared a similar look.

I was very disappointed when I saw the Bd.

Looking at the caps now, it looks much closer to the DVD/Ld than I remembered- unless that's just the German edition?
I think the biggest alteration was in scenes set in the woods.

I'll be anxious to see what this Criterion is like, as I still haven't been able to sit down and enjoy the current Fox disc. Something about the look has never sat right with me.
Thank you for the info and details. I couldn't imagine the DE and US Fox (considering they have the same distributor) discs being that different, but I've certainly been wrong about that kind of thing before.

I would imagine that the Coen's involvement would definitely help to push the new transfer towards the right color timing.

You would think...but filmmakers change their minds all the time.

Ridley Scott and Dean Cundey have both signed off on multiple revisions of their films. Each is stamped with their approval, until the next wildly divergent looking edition is released with a new stamp of approval.

I'm also bothered by the 2K limitation. This is one of the best films in their oeuvre. If it wasn't accorded a new 4K master in 2020/21, something ain't right.

You forgot to mention William Friedkin and Michael Mann.
