Edition looks very nice. FYI this is the version of amazon.it. Everything is in English except the J-card.

Watched this UHD last week. This was my first time seeing IB outside of the initial theatrical run.

I will say while I enjoyed it a lot more the second time around, I do feel that the individual scenes played out much the same even if they were exciting on their own-
[Show spoiler]dialogue to slowly build up tension which explodes at the end.
Later scenes made me realize that this was indeed going to happen based on the previous ones.

Detail wise I think this is one of the more impressive UHDs out there especially coming from a 2K DI. The color especially in skin tones can be a bit one-note orange at times but that's simply how it was graded. There was a very, very fine layer of grain throughout but unlike a lot of movies it was still present enough for me to see it despite being a bit farther away from my TV than I would like. It looked like modern film, and it wasn't at all sticky or waxy. I think this is as good as you can get from the source and that's not at all a knock on it. The aggressive top lighting that Geoff mentioned is used quite a bit, but the image doesn't get washed out by it. That warm palette really does make you feel like it's the 1940s and a welcome change from the much more common colder timing of many movies today.A lot of attention to detail is shown in the film from costuming to sets, and it is fun just to drink in all that atmosphere. Waltz is a joy to watch as is the rest of the cast, even more minor characters. If you enjoy the movie, I'd definitely buy it.

I think the HDR grading is a wee bit aggressive and the contrast runs a touch hot. Thankfully it didn't end up looking like King Kong. Overall image quality is quite impressive.

As expected, my Complete Basterds set arrived bashed to hell (how could it not in that absurd box?) Ready for the Twitter adventure that ensued?

“Hi Travis, I am very sorry to hear that your order of the Inglourious Basterds - Zavvi Exclusive 4K Ultra HD Complete Basterds Edition was delivered to you damaged, can you please send over an image of this damage and we will be more than happy to assist further with this.”

Pics sent.

“Hi Travis, We'd be happy to provide a partial refund amounting to 10%, is this acceptable in this matter?”

“Suppose it’s not? Suppose I paid $129 dollars for a strictly limited edition display-worthy collector set and this is the best you can do? How does $13 make this damaged collectible set suddenly become collectible in condition? How does $13 make me feel valued as a customer? How does $13 make me feel like Zavvi has taken ownership of the problem and understands that it treats its own exclusives like throwaway things of insubstantial quality that are easily replaceable? How does $13 make me feel confident in continuing to order from this company?”

“Hi Travis, I do apologise. I understand how frustrating this can be as it is a collectible item. I can see that we still have some in stock, if you'd like we can help you return this and we'll send you a new one. If you'd prefer not to return it, I'd like to offer you a 20% refund.”

“I am not convinced that a replacement shipment will be boxed with any better protective measures than this one was. It may arrive in worse condition than this one did. What assurances can you provide me that it will be better protected? Can I be guaranteed that Zavvi will ship a replacement set with full and appreciable cushioning around all four sides of the item’s case?”

“Hello Travis, Please be assured we have raised this with the warehouse to be sent out to you in better packaging when we replace this. I have also arranged a free return for you. As soon as we have this back in our warehouse, we will send a replacement out to you. If for any reason, the replacement arrives damaged then we will look into finding a suitable solution for you.

To make your return process as quick and easy as possible, you can create your returns label here: https://zavviinternational.returns.international/lite. All you'll need to do is fill in your details using the steps found in the portal.

Please be advised that once the parcel has been received back, a confirmation email will be sent, following this it can take up to 3-5 working days for the refund to enter your account.

When you reach the payment screen, please enter [code redacted] in the voucher code box. That way you will not have to pay for the return.

If you have any trouble with your return, or have any further questions then please do not hesitate to get in touch and a member of our team will be happy to help.

We are very sorry for distress and inconvenience this has caused you.”

“I appreciate this solution very much. Can you promise me a replacement copy is being reserved for me so that any remaining stock you have is not sold out while my damaged set is en route back to you?”

“Hello Travis, We will do everything we can to ensure we send you your replacement successfully and in pristine condition.

Thank you for your patience, we appreciate this massively.”

“I followed the link and process advised and never came to a payment screen. In fact, the only option received was “you must pay for your own postage” and a return label with no prepaid language attached. How do I proceed now? I do not wish to be out-of-pocket for this return.”

“Please can you provide a quote of returns cost so we can help assist with this? Thank you.”

“The least expensive option U.S. Postal Service is providing is $40 first class (approximately £30).”

“Hi Travis, Due to the cost of the return and that this order arrived damaged I am more than happy to arrange a replacement for you without this needing to be returned to us. We will send you an e-mail as soon as it is dispatched.”

“That is an amazing, extremely customer-friendly offer, and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it. In return, I will delete my initial public complaint from Twitter. Thank you for your responsiveness to my concern!”

“Hi Travis, You're very welcome, I understand it can be disappointing to receive an order in this condition and would like to apologise again for that. I really hope this has helped and we'll get your replacement sent out as soon as possible. We also really appreciate your handling of the complaint, thank you so much!”

Just received the dispatch notice. Crazy I had to go through all that but, by God, I fought for, and earned, my satisfaction.

Decided to knock this one off the backlog. Yeah, it's not an amazing transfer but it was still a slight upgrade to my eyes. The HDR adds some depth to the picture but does seem a little "hot" as another poster mentioned.

While the picture is detailed, something just seems off. I think it's the compression. It feels like it could be sharper and just looks marginally better if at all over the Blu-ray. Sound seems about the same from the Blu-ray.

While I think it could look a little better, it's still a nice overall package and if you didn't already have it on Blu-ray, the UHD is the way to go. I definitely don't regret upgrading but this is definitely one of those marginal upgrades.

Still a fantastic movie that gripped me throughout despite having seen it several times.

I haven't watched the whole movie so I don't know if some scenes aren't that good looking, but from what I saw, the 4K is more than just a marginal upgrade. I find it weird that people have so many different opinions about this one.

Glad you got it resolved.

They can be a bit shady. A few months ago, I accidently ordered the remastered BD of Basic Instinct from them (I thought it was the 4K). It was my fault and I was on the phone semi-distracted. It was a Saturday night. Immediately, I realized my mistake and sent them an email to cancel. I explained it to them. Monday I received an email claiming it was too late - my order had been shipped and nothing could be done other than request a return once I get it! I was kind of like, huh?! This made little sense as it seemed impossible it could ship that fast, so I called my credit card company explaining what happened and putting a hold on the payment. Needless to say, the item never shipped and was cancelled. It was pure strong-arm BS tactics.

Without wanting to go all amateur psychologist, I think it depends on what people want/expect UHD to do, just like it always does with "marginal" upgrades. Does IB reach the upper limits of what UHD can do in regards to sharpness and colour and "pop" (ugh) without any nasty grain stuff? Nope. Does it represent a substantial improvement over the Blu-ray in itself? Oh yes IMO. And it's that part of the equation that's long been ignored by the reviewing cognoscenti at large, not just for this UHD but in general.

I do of coursh fully appreciate that we shouldn't have to perpetually compare one thing to the other for hours on end in order to rationalise our enjoyment of it, nor would I expect a casual viewer to do such a thing (though they'll happily spend time watching some clueless YouTube goober get it completely wrong, go figure) but such is the nature of UHD as a system that its benefits aren't as immediately apparent and that's why I do the deep dives that I do.

What’s the discount code? The only one I see is for new customers.

I think you are right about the expectations. It seems like many people are looking for that 'reference 4k disc' that they can show to their friends and end up dissapointed when they don't get it, even when the PQ fits the look of the movie and brings the best out of it.

After I looked at the IB UHD, the bluray looked dull and flat. The BD is not a bad disc, but it's nowhere near the 4K. The UHD looks very balanced. I just watched In the Line of Fire 4K, and while it's a beautiful transfer, the brightness of the HDR is a bit distracting. In the IB 4K there is nothing distracting about it.

I think my issue was the sharpness. It almost looks like there's some anti-aliasing going on. In the opening house scene, the faces just didn't look all that sharp. Either DNR, anti-aliasing or bad compression. It certainly looks better than the Blu-ray and the HDR adds new depth but you always wonder if it could look better.

Outside of the DNR, it looks like an upscaled Blu-ray to me.

I'm certainly not a complainer though. People are nitpicking the hell out of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and I didn't see any problems outside of the extremely dark HDR in the night scenes which are expected. I'm sure I could see them if the flaws were pointed out to me but nothing stood out.

I wouldn't consider myself a film snob. I just want my UHDs to be sharp and have as little tampering as possible. I just want it to look as close to the cinema as possible. When we get into chroma errors, etc, that's where you lose me.

IB looks great. I don't want to stray anyone from it. I do think it could probably look even better though.

Apparently there is an issue with the booklet included on those european special editions.

I own the italian one, and it's fine, but some other owners are reporting the first 12 pages are repeated, meaning 13-24 are missing.

Does this movie has a really yellow/orange tone? I had to change my tv color temperature from warm 2 to warm 1.

Yes it does. With my plasma TV I had set my set to "cool" as well as my monitor and when going with the calibrated modes on my LG C8 I really had to get used to the D65 white point...for part way through the first movie I watched on it. It makes skin tones and everything else look much more natural and when you switch back you quickly realize how ice blue whites on a "cool" setting are and you hate them. My high end 1440p widescreen CRT has a calibrated sRGB mode and that is much warmer than I was used to as well (D50? Not sure).

So trust me, stick with Warm 2 or whatever your D65 point is. You get used to it very quickly and do not want to go back.

Zavvi (who own Arrow) have put out FAT TAT editions so I believe the Arrow release has either been shelved or cancelled outright but again, you never know. At $10, i'm not complaining.
