Default LG C1 or Sony A80J

My main movie HDTV is a Panasonic V10 Plasma (58"). I love this TV and always have. The PQ is superb. Even though I have an OPPO 203, I have not yet upgraded this TV to a 4K model. We have other 4K TVs in the house, but not in the movie room.

I bought the V10 new in 2010, so it's almost 12 years old. It still works great, but I'm thinking of upgrading. I was thinking of picking up a 65" LG C1 OLED. But I'm also considering a Sony A80J. Each of these can be purchased for about $1,800.

To begin with, please tell me that I'm not going to be disappointed in either of these TVs compared to my Panny Plasma? I'm almost 51, so my eyes are not the same as they were when I was 20. But to my eyes, my Panny V10 is perfect. I leave it in THX mode all the time and things just look perfect. Please tell me that the LG or Sony will look better.

As for which one I should choose, I'm leaning toward the LG C1, but I'd like to hear what others think.

Thanks everyone.

Can't speak to the LG or A80J but I upgraded to the Sony A90J from a Panny VT60 and the improvement is substantial for everything except motion. The motion isn't as bad as I was concerned it would be. Stutter is slightly noticeable on panning shots. I have mitigating settings at minimum as I detest SOE. Hope this helps!

Personally, I say the Sony would be better despite having only 2 HDMI 2.1 ports. Sony handles motion the best of any TV maker out there. The TV has an adjustable height of using a stand and soundbar. I have more confidence is Sony's electronics. LG is junk that breaks easily in my experience. That said, OLED has frequent banding issues, so you could be playing the panel lottery buying any OLED. Plus burn in risk. Check both for screen reflections too. The C1 has terrible reflections. Not sure about the Sony, but I think it has an anti-reflective coating. Between the two I say Sony.

Since it's mostly for movie watching I'd probably lean towards the A80J. I think it has a better remote, the XR processor, accurate colors out of the box. LG's internal menu and UI turns me off as it's a bit cluttered and there's ads. They had it pretty good back on the C9 but every year it's a little more clunky. The C1 has a pure glossy screen though while A80J is described as "semi-glossy".

Whichever one you decide for, make sure you can return it if the motion is not good enough. That might be the biggest adjustment or concession you'll have to make.

There is no perfect tv, and all brands have there pros and cons. It's all based on personal preference, but from my bad experience that I've had with my first LG 4K with the panel gone bad after just 4 years, even though Sony 4K OLED tv panels are made by LG, I would get a Sony. Whichever brand you choose, I highly recommend that you purchase a 4+ year extended warranty with it because considering the quality of all 4K tvs, you're going to need it. Manufacturers don't make tvs like they used to. They make them to break to keep people buying them.

Whichever one I go with, and I'm not even sure if I'm going to get a new HDTV at this time, it will be from Costco and it will come with a 5 year warranty.

My biggest concern is that I'll get the new HDTV and it won't seem like a major improvement. Or worse - the PQ might not be as good as what I have now. I'm assuming for most things the PQ, especially with 4K and UHD, will be better. But what about fast action, such as sports? I'd really be upset if I got rid of this Panny and the 4K OLED replacement didn't blow if away.

If you watch a lot of sports, play games and watch movies, you most definitely would want a 4K tv with 120hz refresh rate, that will significantly reduce motion blur. A 4K tv does look better than a plasma. The best tv that will look closest to a plasma is an OLED, but don't get rid of your plasma because, it's too good of a tv and manufacturers don't make quality tvs like that anymore.

I think buying either brand will be a HUGE upgrade. I got the C1 at the end of October and I'm blown away how terrific everything looks--- both blu ray and 4k! Current films that are shot digital are the huge show off pieces in particular-- pop in a super hero flick or check out the John Wick trilogy--- OLED is the best and I'm never going back!

Agree that Costco is the place to buy--- 5 year warranty (currently free with purchase)... if my OLED craps out on me I'll just be getting a new free TV most likely...

That's what I'm looking at. Either an LG C1 or a Sony A80J. And if I do upgrade my plasma will go to my son. I'm not tossing it. It still works perfectly.

My biggest concern is that the OLED won't give me that "wow" feeling, the way my plasma did. If it's not going to give me that "wow" feeling then I'd just rather keep my plasma for now.

Thanks. That is encouraging. I'm leaning toward the C1 myself.

Oh yes, you will be surprised at the picture quality of a 4K tv, especially with HDR10 and Dolby Vision with a proper calibration. You will not be disappointed.

Which C1 did you get and how much was it at Costco?

I'm looking at the 65". My Panny is 58" and I sit about 6' from the screen. So the 65" will be a step up and probably as large as I'd like to go from that seating distance.

You've got a good deal. I started to get the 77", but I would had to get a bigger tv stand to put it on and I didn't want to wall mount it, so I just went on and bought another 65" so I could use the same tv stand that I have.

I upgraded my 5 year old Samsung SUHD 8000 model--- If you are wall mounting I recommend bigger the better because I was always wishing my TV was bigger (went from a 52 to a 60 to a 65 in the past decade or so)

Either way the 65" would be a nice upgrade and the PQ difference should still be stupendous!

I really can't go larger. It would just be too big for me. Right now, I feel like I'm in the center middle seat in a theater. When I go to a theater that's where I sit. I don't want to be any closer than that. I realize some people do. But not me. The 65" will be a slight increase, but not too much.

that's cool-- remember mine is wall mounted so that makes a bigger difference on size. I'm probably about 8 feet away...

My old 65" is now on a stand in our living room and it's plenty big in that scenario...

either way-- get an OLED-- you will not be disappointed

Sony, without a doubt. I recently bought a 65 inch A80J coming from a 60 inch Samsung plasma and you simply can't beat the XR processor and Sony's build quality. BD's look native 4K most of the time, depending on the title...and native 4K HDR is simply stunning.
