Jeff,
I have a really weird question. Would you happen to know if Sony is using the proper theatrical subtitles or the lesser accurate DVD subtitles for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? Thanks

I could swear Crouching Tiger had 2 sub tracks, the proper subtitle and the dubtitle as CC for the dub track

It's been awhile, I actually have the region 3 disc that was released about a week after the US theatrical release so I never owned the US disc

Penton might be able to get you a better answer on that. What is the specific innaccuracy?

Good to hear Sony delaying releases because of issues with masters. I never mind the studio taking their time to get things right.

Jeff, any word on The Crow coming to the U.S.?

Jeff, with the batch of 80s catalog titles from Sony just announced, I notice only Starman has no announced extras, despite Sony releasing an SE of the title in Europe with a Carpenter commentary and other extras - extras that were never put into the US release reportedly do to marketing decisions. What are the chances we can get Sony to put those extras on the Blu release?

Hi - Is there a date on the release of Logan's Run yet? And any idea how well the Blu upgrade will be?

Starman sold poorly on DVD in the US, never prompting them to do a reissue with the bonus. It's always been much bigger in Europe. I'd bet those extras are on there, if for no other reason than selling the same disc everywhere

The Crow needs new masters, and in my book more time=more time to tell Pressman to go to hell and get Proyas to release his 2-hour on-set documentary

Logan's Run is tied to the on-again, off-again remake.

I expect them to wait at least another year, but the mastering is done
So, does that mean you know the answer to the question??

Mastering is done as in they have HD masters in the archive that can be used for Blu-ray

And they can manipulate it however they want for a Blu-ray release?
i.e. 4:3 (please!) of 1.78:1 (because it's just got to fill up my expensive new big wide TV)
Do you know if that decision has been made yet?
And why couldn't they give the option of both on the Blu-ray release??

If they followed standard practice, 4:3 and 16:9 tilt-n-scan masters have been created. Some people have claimed there's actually extra footage on the sides on Seinfeld, I've never been a fan of the show so I couldn't say one way or the other.

They could give the option of both. If it's a center extraction, doing some black overlays for the extra width would be quite simple, if it's not, then they would have to do everything twice

I doubt they could change it how ever they wanted very easily, because so much went into modifying each shot in every episode - cropping some vertically, cropping only the bottom off some, the top off others, and the 'opening up' of almost every shot in some form or another.

It was never just a straight-forward frame expansion to widescreen, probably because they wanted to avoid the kinds of issues seen on the expanded Buffy and ANGEL episodes.

They clearly put a lot of effort into it, and it really does look quite good.

There are several examples in various forums of the 4:3/16:9 comparisons, and I'll look for some to post here.

As you can see, every scene was expanded as well was cropped to achieve the 16:9 frame.

I was amazed how Hogan's Heroes (an otherwise forgettable TV series) looked in 16x9 1.78.

There were shows that were composed for widescreen back in the 50's/60's waiting for the day TV went wide as film had recently done.

A lot of those shows were also pretty center composed, because the TVs of the day cropped a whole lot due to overscan.

For the record though, I prefer to see the entire frame as intended. Unnecessary cropping to "fill the screen" is always unacceptable. I wish they'd leave the IMAX films at their OAR for example.

Virtually all IMAX films are protected for 1.78:1, at least the ones that have experienced DPs

Transformers 2 is like the Dark Knight in that the protection goes down the pipe, and will likely receive a Dark Knight style release

Esox runs for cover...

Indeed! I expected it to look terrible... but I am very impressed with the "cropped version". I'm generally a big believer in OAR, but I'm not sure I wouldn't prefer the "cropped version" of "Seinfeld." I agree that I'd love the option of both... even if it cost a little more.

Yea when u see a seinfeld ep still in 4x3 it just looks so squezzed in now compared to the 16x9 eps.

When they finally go blu 16x9 is the way to go for the shows.

I still remember the words of PaidGeek: "I'm sure Seinfeld is just as funny in HD [as in SD]."
