If anyone is emailing Disney Japan, please be unfailingly polite. They could just get annoyed at all the emails they are getting regarding English subs and drop them from all future releases.

I watched the 3D disc last night on my projector and have to say I thought this was one of Marvels weakest entries but overall still enjoyable. 3D was average.

I downloaded a subtitle file with subs for the foreign spoken parts-only, and played it through my Oppo and it worked great. Because the film was in scope I was able to drop the subs down to the bottom border so they didn't interfere with the 3D effect

And when the image opens up from 2.39 to 16x9 it is not only an impactful moment, but especially in 3D it is a lasting one as suddenly the depth is extended too. IMAX FTW!
I'll give you a thumbs up because I like you - but I'd hit the "Strongly Disagree" button if there was one! I use JVC projectors at home (which deliver amongst the best black levels in the business, certainly no DLPs can come close) in a bat-cave (zero light leakage, black carpet, black velvet lined walls and ceiling - something of a bunker...) - and masking definitely improves the image. In bright scenes, sure, the contrast will let the black bars effectively disappear, but in dark scenes there's not a projector/room combination in the world where black masking won't significantly improve the way it looks: Give it a try - you'll never go back..! (I might have mentioned before that this is why I detest variable aspect ratio films..!) Leaving the screen unmasked just to enjoy a few "IMAX" moments just isn't worth the sacrifice, to my eyes.

And "IMAX" on a 3D Blu-ray: So, quite apart from the fact that no one is watching in actual IMAX at home, it's not even 4K! It's just a 1.78:1 image (or 1.9:1, or 4:3, or whatever the hell it is) - but that's all it is.

I'd love to see a bunch of side-by-side comparison shots of stills from Shang-Chi, "IMAX" vs 2.39:1, if anyone can whistle some up. If it was very meticulously composed to look correct in 1.78:1(?) - then that's the shape I'd like to see it in at home; if for 2.39:1, then that's the shape I'd like. I find the notion that a film can be composed with a "safe area" when cropped to be an affront to the art of cinematography.

I've spent almost my whole life defending 3D against the accusation of being a gimmick. But, IMAX - that's a gimmick (for movies) in my opinion. And, unlike 3D, it's one that irreversibly harms the look of the film.

Interesting your view on the 3D, I to use a projector but reading this I'm not overly upset by not buying the 3D version due to the subs.

I'm sure those Japanese Disney home media executives are dedicated forum readers here and really value our opinions a lot.

But seriously, if any execs at Disney cared about how pleased we are with their 3D blu-rays they'd, oh I don't know... maybe still be selling them to us in all those other markets?

I'm giving my 3D Blu-Ray a whirl just now on my X-Box One S but sadly I am guessing at the menus. I thought I'd tried every option but so far, I've managed to get English Subtitles switched on but I'm not getting English Audio (I can only assume kicks in around the 10:45 mark?)

Can anyone give me some pointers please? Thanks in advance :-)

Oops, I just tried one more setting and I got it sorted. I'd LOVE to tell you how I managed it but it was pot-luck. If anyone could print up a guide though I'm sure it would be appreciated

Delivery: Stupid fast!
Ralph breaks the Internet took about 6 days. Shang Chi only took 3.

Packaging: Not great.
Flimsy cardboard packaging. A definite step down from the packaging for Ralph.

Disc & Contents: Interesting and awesome.
Ralph contained a localised version and English version, Shang Chi only has one.
But the 3D video file is over 40GB 3D with a bit rate similar to Black Widow of 37Mb/s which in parts is also a very nice looking film.

IMAX: None.

Subs: Sorry.
Only full subs but easily remedied. Forced only subs are readily available and they do work

3D: Only a brief look so far but great.
Not particularly strong 3D in the early stages of the film but it already looks better than Black Widow and miles better than Monster Hunter (which still looks nice). Black Widow had a few action set pieces that had 3D in mind. Monster Hunter has none. Watching Shang Chi 2D it is obvious that it was filmed with 3D in mind from the start. I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but I've already seen a number of little properly shot and edited 3D moments I didn't even think of, never mind the ones I did. The 3D pre-planning does make a noticeable difference.

Once I've muxed the Atmos track I might watch it again this week.

Anyway, HtH
Considering BW is one of the best Marvel 3D presentations of the entire series I have serious doubts about your statements given what I have read so far.

For what it's worth, I've tested Shang-Chi now myself and (IMHO) the 3D is very strong and stands up against the likes of Ragnarok, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Infinity War and Endgame. Marvel has knocked it out of the park (again, IMHO).
This is coming from someone who hates medium/mild 3D.

I know I keep saying this (sorry ) and I may be wrong, but I think this is a common misconception about how strong 3D is. I don't think the 3D is that strong for the majority of the film. I haven't watched the end sequence yet, I'm saving that for my rewatch I think the 3D looks great because it was filmed with 3D in mind and they sometimes turn up the 3D for those sequences. I should probably shut up about this now lol.

For me, strong 3D is seeing clear layers to the 3D. The characters are clearly in front of the scenery, the scenery is clearly in front of the background. If I buy a movie and these layers blend together and I can't see the depth going into or coming out of the screen I just sell the 3D blu-ray and move on (sold all my Pixar 3D movies because I thought the 3D was too mild).

Shange-Chi (to me) looks as good as the likes of Ragnarok and Captain Marvel. If that isn't strong 3D so be it but that is the 3D I like. No way am I forking out £60 for medium 3D, I would just stick it on eBay but Shang-Chi is a keeper.

I always thought and said many times that Shang-chi 3D should be great and from what I've seen so far it is. I also said on this thread that it could match Dr Strange and Captain Marvel and from what I've seen I think it will do that too.

I reserve that right to change my mind after watching, but as great as Guardians and Dr Strange are, as great as the Space and flying scenes in Captain Marvel is, I don't think they match Ragnarok and to say that Shang-chi matches Ragnarok might be a step too far for me

No problem But objectively speaking, Black Widow is not in the same league as the best. By the best I don't mean the whole film. Black Widow looks pretty 3D throughout whereas many other MCU films don't. As I've said before, I feel that this is why 3D films like this are appreciated and they should be.

But when I say the best, I mean the best scenes. The best 3D scenes in Black Widow are not as good as the best scenes in Avengers, never mind Guardians or Captain Marvel and certainly not as good as the best scenes in Dr Strange. Shang-chi is similar to Dr Strange because I think overall it matches Black Widow and First Avenger for nice 3d throughout and has many smaller 3D centric scenes in the film. Black Widow also has these smaller 3D scenes but they are just not executed as well. Taking into account how well the smaller scenes are executed, Shang-chi's big set piece scenes are likely to be closer to Dr Strange than Black Widow.

But may be on your set up, BW looks that great, who knows?

I like the 3D in the latter Phase 3 movies equally. I can't separate them.

Examples;
Thor Ragnarok - Hela attacks Thor in the Bifrost beam
Black Panther - When the ship enters Wakanda for the first time
Infinity War - Thanos' introduction
Ant-Man and the Wasp - The Quantum Realm
Captain Marvel - The Kree homeworld
Endgame - The final showdown

For me, all reference-quality 3D and I am happy to add Shang-Chi to that list.

I believe that user got them from the 4K, but you don’t necessarily need to wait on that person. If you google ‘Shang chi subtitles srt foreign only’ you should be able to find a foreign only subtitle from a website like sub scene. As long as it’s from the Blu-ray, it should match up, as I don’t think the Japanese release adds any extra studio logos or anything in the intro that should change the length. Worth a try at least if you don’t want to wait! That’s what I’ll be doing when my disc comes in if nobody else has posted one
