Unless they re-composited the materials to 720 or 1080p, I'd rather not get an upscale, The FF: Advent Children UHD is a mess because it's a 4K upscale of a 480p source for most of the movie

I'd be fine with a filmout.

I wasn't really at all disappointed with the video quality of The Animatrix when I watched it earlier this month. Or the 5.1. There was some macroblocking in a few very dark transitions, but it was so minor. Good enough. And at least the color grade is consistent, unlike the UHD of the 1999 movie we're stuck with.

We'll still get better colour and potentially HDR.
The Animatrix is essential because aspects of the live action films make no sense without it. The appearance of 'The Kid' in Zion for example.

I don't know if I would argue it's essential. More of an easter egg for fans. For anyone who didn't watch it, the Kid is just a new character that plays a minor role in Revolutions just like any other new character.

Though I am all onboard with getting it in 4K or at least included with the set.

The Matrix Revolutions is a terrible movie, and I hated all the tie-in stuff they did with the Animatrix, the video game, and etc. It added nothing to what is an emotionally hollow, dull, film. The only reason I'm excited about Matrix 4 is because it might potentially retcon Revolutions out of existence, or at least render it irrelevant.

I'm still quite a bit trepidatious about The Matrix Resurrections but willing to trust Lana in that she has another unique and caring story to tell.
I think Revolutions is better than Reloaded, but I know I'm in the minority on that.

The fact The Matrix Resurrections takes into account ALL of the continuity of the franchise (The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, The Animatrix, Enter the Matrix, The Matrix Online, etc) while providing its own
[Show spoiler]meta commentary on reboots, franchising, and nostalgia
is what has me excited. Next Wednesday can't get here soon enough.

Are you sure Warner a filmout for the Blu-ray? It looks to me like the DI was used for the transfer. There's no film-grain on any of them, except "Program" where it was added in digitally.

I doubt the resolution on this is that low. This is around the time anime shows like Blood: The Last Vampire, Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex and One Piece were going HD. A high-budget production like this probably had the studios using production pipelines that were made for HD production. The resolution was likely in the range of 540p and 720p and then upscaled to 1080p (a common practice that's still done to this day). I doubt we'll have an Advent Children situation on our hands here.

It's a step down from the first two, but I still like it.

You're definitely not in the minority, maybe only the vocal minority. I saw the second in theaters and it was a difficult film to get through, felt more like modern tv. So thinking the third would be as dull with repetitive matrix fights and exposition scenes, I mistakingly skipped on Revolutions in theaters, and when I finally saw it on DVD at home, I was so upset because it was my favorite! I believe it still is after seeing the fourth.

Revolutions does kinda drag in the beginning, but to me they're one movie since they were shot at the same time. Reloaded is a little bit more entertaining

A good selling point would be The Animatrix on 4K UHD.

The Animatrix blu-ray is a direct port of the high definition DI, not a film-out.

Can someone explain to me why the black cat/deja vu has become so prominent in marketing and artwork for the series recently? It was one scene in the first film, so bizarre. Just use the code.

The black cat also shows up at the very end of Revolutions. And in Resurrections there is a black cat literally named Deja Vu. It’s an iconic part of the series now, and black cats feel naturally symbolic,

I find it amusing that so much negativity is coming from quarters that are mad at things they didn’t even understand. For the naysayers, they’ll get it one day. For the rest of us, Resurrections is a welcome addition to the Matrix lore.
