Definitely appreciate this. Planning a customized version of the Japanese BDs for when my copy comes in, with the subs from this set and a bunch of added audio tracks

I recommend using the video from the new set cuz the encode is amazing and there isn't that extra touch of DNR like the Japanese discs.

Stick to the US set. Much higher quality.

For real. Having watched a few episodes from the JPN BD, the new set is the best Evangelion has ever looked. Huge upgrade from the platinum set, and a noticeable upgrade from the JPN BD.

Right? It's subtle, but the light DNR'ed grain on the JPBD, does pale to the US set. I'm very curious how the Dynit set will compare. Kinda excited, since it arrives today.

I've still had yet to see anyone post a side-by-side, so I had a friend take a screenshot from his Japanese set and finally made a comparison. The DNR reduction is subtle but notable.

EDIT: Fixed link

That does look good. My main reservation about using the GKIDS video as the basis for this project was the opening, which I'm guessing is the version seen on Netflix that omits the FMttM credits. I could just swap in the JP version of the opening in Premiere, but I don't know if the final render would preserve enough of the added grain detail to make it worth the effort. I know you can stitch together separate video sources without re-encoding in MKVtoolnix, for instance, if they have the same basic specs, but it's limited by the i-frames, which could interfere with the timing.

You could probably change the frames from each OP, take the grain from the USBD using a script with avisynth and apply it to the JPBD frame. That way you can preserve the grain and have the credit that's missing.

I am still a novice when it comes to video restoration via avisynth and/or vaporsynth, but I do talk to experts on it. So I've picked up some stuff along the way.

That link is already down. What is it with these comparison sites that everyone uses, they always seem to be broken or removed for me.

The JPN BD footage has a slight blur to it, and small details got smudged a bit. It isn't terrible and I only really noticed it when I got the Gkids release, but the Gkids/MediaOCD BDs look much sharper in that regard. Very filmic and looks pretty damn close to cel quality.

I think that was on me this time. I accidentally uploaded it like 5 times because it didn't appear to be working when it actually was. There's now a new link in the post.

This may have already been complained, but I’m disappointed to find out that the Japanese Stereo is only on the Official Series discs while Classic only gets 5.1. Why couldn’t they just simply insert the audio to these discs? Why didn’t you mention this?

Exactly! It's really annoying. And what even more annoying is they created an "original mix" using the VSI group's dub. I haven't had enough time to do extensive QA, but I believe they used the original 2.0 elements to create it.

The ADV classic 2.0 dub is not included.
I guess only 8 episodes will ever exist lossless for it.

There VHS Hi-Fi for the rest, which is pretty good, big obviously lesser than LD PCM. If only those tapes weren’t so darn expensive…

Oh man... I checked. That's really expensive! That's as much as getting the CE and the original JPBDs combined now.

At some point I'll have to sit down and capture the 2.0 dub audio from the VHS tapes before the Hi-Fi track degrades too much

Still running around trying to get Route to send me a replacement!
No response since yesterday when they sent me a link to file a USPS claim.
It wants senders shipping address... I don't know it.
It wants package or envelope shipped. I have no clue.
It wants dimensions of said package or envelope... Again, no idea.
It wants weight... Not a clue...

So I sent those questions in and haven't heard back yet.
Yesterday, before I sent those, the rep was very quick to reply.

My ultimate Edition arrived today, like a week earlier than expected
Here's a size comparison between it and the LD boxes for the movie and the first TV set:

When I get home tonight I'll actually open it up and compare an art card or 2 to an actual LD cover, to see how those size up
