101 recently claimed on their social media page that the 3d elements for this no longer exist. First I've heard of it, and I expect that they're talking crap.

Yeah its probably just BS to explain why they couldn't be bothered to put out a 3D blu.

That's BS.

I saw a 35mm print two years ago. Perhaps the actual left and right camera negatives can't be found, but prints do exist, and I'm sure other archival elements exist too. The 3DFA used a faded theatrical print to restore Gog (1954), so there's no excuse not to make this film available on 3-D Blu-Ray.

Have 88 Films EVER released a 3D Blu Ray though? They probably just thought it wasn't worth the effort as they are a small label.

Both left/right 35mm elements exist AND the over/under 35mm elements exist.

What does not exist is a digital 3-D master.

101 Films, different number, and yes they have released a 3D-Bluray. I really wish I could recommend it.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Night...Blu-ray/38101/

I think if there'd been a 3D master ready to go for Spacehunter, they might have been open to releasing it, but by the time news of the release leaked, it was already too late.

I had been assuming Indicator might take a shot at it as they had expressed interest, but I wasn't expecting 101 Films to grab the license. Maddening.

Koch Germany is going to be releasing SPACEHUNTER. I doubt they'll include a 3D edition, but I'm going to hold on to false hope for a while that my #1 wanted 3D title will magically popup in Europe lol

Some questions about the The UK 101 Films blu-ray:

1. Region B locked?

2. Audio is listed as English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. Is that correct? 5.1?

3. Audio commentary any good?

I doubt many people here own it seeing as it wasn't put out on 3D blu ray.

I think it's region locked but I can't comment on the audio because I refuse to buy 2D versions of 3D movies.

Try asking in the Official 101 Films thread.

I just came across a post by Konstantinos on HTF from last week that the Koch release includes an SD 3D version, apparently derived from the 1980s Japanese 3D-VHD release. The Mill Creek and 101 Films releases don't have this. The Koch release also lists interviews with the vfx artists who worked on the film.

Better than nothing I guess. But far from what this movie deserves.

Is it anaglyph on the Koch release, or just converted to anaglyph for those screenshots?

Although the anaglyph version probably works for more people. Koch did the same thing with Revenge of the Creature some years back

Well if nothing else, the back of the box says anaglyph. I would have liked a high-quality transfer of the VHD version for my own purpsoses. It's a shame that Sony will sell it for consumption but won't remaster it properly. They're all still releasing the same old master made for DVD that's 2D, too dark, and in the wrong aspect ratio.

It's a shame Koch didn't reach out. With their license - and my contacts at the archive - we might have been able to get a true 3D restoration off the ground.

Sigh.

Same old story. Everyone thinks they can release 3D on their own. They can, and they screw it up every time. Let's see all the titles that would have been better if The 3D Film Archive had been involved (probably others I can't think of):

Creature From The Black Lagoon

Comin At Ya!

Jaws 3

Toto - Il piu comico spettacolo del mondo

Amityville 3D

Working for Peanuts

Metalstorm

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone

Isn't the aspect ratio debatable? The 2.35 : 1 aspect ratio was in order to be compatible with over/under 3-D projection.

I will never understand why Sony didn't create a 3-D master for Spacehunter back when they were mastering Mad Magician, Gun Fury, Man in the Dark, The Three Stooges, and Miss Sadie Thompson. While at the same time sitting on them for years, meanwhile they were releasing their own 3D hardware to a scarcity of content available. Some baffling choices and missed opportunities.

Thankfully it wasn't the end of the line for that title!

This time around, there seems less cause for optimism.

Incidentally, Koch appear to have made a habit of this. There is yet another vintage title on their website in a recent boxset that lists among the extras:
  • Neue 4K-Abtastung vom Kameranegativ
  • Trailer
  • Anaglyphe 3D-Fassung (ca. 88 Minuten)
... doesn't bother me as much in that particular case, but still a sorry state of affairs.

Sigh.
A damned shame. It would've been an absolute visual showcase, it might've set a new standard for just how vivid 1980s 3-D could be when correctly restored. Any label would be lucky to have that. Hard to say if there will be many such opportunities at this stage. It's been licensed and released in most major markets. Maybe France, Australia is left?

One wonders have any of the labels there already picked it up? Let's face it, they would probably make the same mistake. Actually scratch Australia, Via Vision had a bare bones release in 2019.

Bob if you ever get a chance at this title, please, I know your hands are tied, and there's only so much you can do, but if there's any extra thing any of us could do that might bring it closer to reality ... I dunno what that might be, I just really hate to let this one go, and I know I'm not the only one.
