Well this is interesting. My disc will not eject from the player.

Tonight I popped in my Godzilla (1998) 4K UHD disc for the first time, and will absolutely not eject; the disc tray will not open under any circumstance. Every single time I select the Open/Close button on the remote or on the player itself, it will say OPEN, but instead the disc will start back up again, and continue to do this over and over again.

I've shut it off, unplugged, and nothing.

I went to Panasonic's website for troubleshooting, and this is what they've given me. That didn't work either.

Purchased the player and August, and this is the first sign of trouble. Anyone else experiencing this, and/or have found a way to resolve this problem?

Mine can be weird if I open the tray on the machine, I almost always have to give it a minute or so or else use the remote to close it. It's been like that since day one. You check for any dirt in the mechanism, I had an issue with an old player that refused to open and it was due to a bit of dirt stuck in the mechanism.

Did you get those "00 RET" and "06FTO" displayed as explained in the instructions you linked?

Model DP-UB820
1. Turn the unit OFF.
2. Press and hold the [ OK ] the [ Y ] and the [ B ] buttons on the remote control at the same time for more than 5 seconds. “00 RET” is displayed on the unit’s display.
3. Press the arrow right ►Right Arrow button repeatedly until “06FTO” is displayed on the unit’s display.
4. Press the [ OK ] button.

Yes, I went through all the motions of those exact same instructions for the 9000, and I’d did absolutely nothing after all of that. Just stayed shut off. I tried it multiple times too. Turned the power back on, tried ejecting. Didn’t turn the power back on and hit the eject button from the get go. Nothing. All it does is continue to read the disc over and over again, and starts playing it from the beginning. I’m wondering if the disc might be corrupt?

Have you tried plugging the unit directly into the wall? Sometimes surge protectors can be faulty and don’t give the player enough power.

On the 820:

1. Is there an option for resuming playback? My previous players would remember the place I stopped or turned the player off on, this one doesn't seem to have that (same discs that allowed it on old players)

2. Is there a way to completely turn off the front display? I saw Dim, Auto, Normal, but nothing to turn it off. I like darkness when I watch, I could always put electrical tape on it.

3. Are there any optimizations most people miss or anything I should enable? I have a Vizio P659-G1 for reference.

4. Are there any tools for optimization aside from the Spears and Munsil 4K disc. Sounds like that disc is for enthusiasts and less for amatures.

I've turned the front display off completely, but I can't remember how right now...

The front display is one of the things I love about this player.

I do like the feature, I just like the ability to turn it off. I'm unfortunately easily distracted so I like minimal lights on stuff around my screen. I used to have a player that had a display, but you could hit a button to turn it off.

I hear ya.

I just checked mine (820/824) and there is no option to disable the front display completely; something which I think should have been available even though I personally do want it on at all times.

You might as well try a hard reset...
1. Turn the unit OFF.
2. Press and hold [OK], the [Yellow] button and the [Blue] button on the remote control at the *same time* for more than 5 seconds.
“00 RET” is displayed on the unit’s display.
3. Press [►] right repeatedly on the remote control until “08 FIN” is displayed on the unit’s display.
4. Press and hold [OK] for more than 5 seconds

1. I never figured this out, seems like some movies ask to "resume playback" while many don't. I don't know what triggers it or doesn't.

2. Yes, but I believe it was hidden somewhere in one of the audio settings. I don't have it on at the moment to check, but it might be under High Clarity. There's a subsetting to turn off video when playing.

3. Most of the default/Auto settings on the player would read the correct EDID and apply the correct settings on the player. The biggest "secret" is if you want to use HDR Optimizer, you have to be playing a movie in order to turn it on from there (and it's only applicable with HDR10, not Dolby Vision).

4. That's all you really need, just use the basic patterns that is for amateurs too. The brightness (black pluge and checkerboard) etc.

Does anyone have a list of labels for who the top menu trick works? Have the UK model and tried a number of RA discs from VS, Kino, Criterion, and a couple of others and none seemed to work with the trick.

Arrow and Criterion are the ones that work with any consistency. Stuff from major studios and most other indies doesn't work.

Settings - Sounds - Settings for High Clarity Sound - Front Panel Display
Set this to Off.

There's two settings for it, one for video and one for audio.

Nice, thanks! Such an odd place for that option.

It's a shame as my main reason for it was the ability to add subtitles to films so that we could watch stuff while our newborn slept as we try to keep noise to a minimum as they wake very easily. That and the fact that I have a tonne of RA and RC Blus that I currently watch on a 10 year old US player. Guess I'll have to buy a new RA player.
Was interested in the region free firmware. From what you wrote, you received the firmware but couldn’t get it to work? And they were unable to resolve the issue for you (whatever the issue might have been)?

Nope, that didn't work either.

I uploaded a quick video off my phone to YouTube showing what's going on. All it does is continue to read the disc over and over again, and refuses to open/close the tray whatsoever. The disc itself plays fine, it just won't come out of the player.

Nothing seems to be working.

I guess your tray is stuck somewhere inside. Trying to open then close and the disc is read again. The only solution is to disamble the case and troubleshoot the tray mechanism. Your problem can be solved with a simple fix. If you are not brave in diagnosing it just try to find someone who can help. Your problem can be fixed easily unless the tray is malfunctioning and need to be changed
