The poor picture quality (which you mentioned) didn't help, and the music score made me think of 'Allo 'Allo and Bergerac. Think I was just in the wrong frame of mind (and was tired as well). I'm sure I read in the UK & Ireland thread for Network's Blu-ray release that the first episode had inferior picture quality, but it improved with the following episodes.

On one of the upcoming new editions of The Footage Detectives, they're showing clips from an episode of The Hidden Truth (which I've enjoyed watching as much as No Hiding Place). It's a pity that a lot of these series are now lost (unless collectors somewhere have complete episodes). I was going to check out another series, The Barnstormers, which was on an edition from late last year (Mike and Noel interviewed an actress from the show (the cast also included a young Dennis Waterman).

Something I've noticed, which I'm liking, is that there are only two ad breaks during The Footage Detectives (in the hour-long timeslot), something which in general on UK TV does not happen these days. I can remember when they changed from two ad breaks in an hour-long timeslot to three ad breaks (it was towards the end of the early noughties (why I remember when, is because it was when the character Dennis Merton was the sergeant at Ashfordly's police station in the drama series Heartbeat (also, Heartbeat was one of the first UK television series to film in widescreen, at the end of the nineties (along with Dalziel & Pascoe and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?). It's refreshing not to have more and more adverts dictating things (along with the static camera shot with Mike and Noel presenting The Footage Detectives, and the end credits on the programmes I've watched on Talking Pictures TV not being squashed up and spoken over).

I may check out an episode or two of The Main Chance, before deciding whether to get Network's complete series DVD set.

I do enjoy the music score on The Invaders (currently towards the end of the second season on my re-watch). Again, like with Maigret and The Main Chance, I may check out one or two episodes of the original Outer Limits.
They make a point of not squashing the end credits and showing them in full without interruption. I think it's a case of "knowing your audience" a lot better in general than many channels do.

The picture quality for the second episode of Maigret was definitely better than for the first. Although the plot itself was rather unusual, I found myself struggling to get into it for some reason. But the end of the episode was worth the watch and, I would think, quite unusual for the day as it was very much not a happy ending (cant say much else without spoiling it).

The Outer Limits this Friday is the episode with Robert Culp which is probably the most well known and, supposedly, one of the best of the series.

The formerly lost episode of The Dickie Henderson Show which was shown after a new edition of The Footage Detectives late last year, and which I didn't record as I thought I wouldn't be interested in it (having watched that Footage Detectives edition, I regretted not recording and watching it), it's being shown again in a week's time (have set it to record). It's either that lost episode or another episode.

For some reason, I thought the majority of The Barnstormers was lost (Mike and Noel interviewed an actress from the show on The Footage Detectives late last year). But I've been noticing it in the Saturday morning listings on Talking Pictures TV recently (and it's on this coming Saturday also). I would guess it's available on Catch-up on the channel's website though (based on other shows being on there).

On the recent new edition where they spoke to Raymond Francis's daughter, a drama or sort-of soap opera called Together was discussed (spotted a couple of episodes of it on in the next week, so I've set those to record).

Also, haven't finished watching an American TV film called The Gentleman Bandit (the cast including The Waltons' Ralph Waite).

They respect the audience with not squashing up and talking over the end credits. Quest Red used to do the same thing, but now every true crime show I watch which they show ends with the majority of the end credits squashed up (and if the end credits don't flash up along the bottom of the screen, they're spoken over as well). Movies 24 have the announcer talk over some of the end credits, but not too much, and they don't squash the end credits up.

This past weekend, I managed to get through all of the second episode of Maigret. It's very different to other detective series (more talky). But similar to what you said above, the ending of this second episode was worth the wait.

I also watched the episode of the original Outer Limits (recorded it and watched it during the weekend). Very much liked this (about
[Show spoiler]the United States president being an impostor).
I recognised some of the actors/guest stars in it (Philip Pine I saw in an episode of the original Hawaii Five-O later on last year (during my re-watch of the series) and I've seen James Hong in several series. Bert Remsen I remember best from the original Dallas (he played a character in a storyline to do with Cliff Barnes).

Spotted in the listings last week a repeat of an episode of an anthology series called Rendezvous (there was another anthology series of the same name (from the second half of the fifties) which I'd like Talking Pictures TV to show). Among the guest stars were Charles Drake (who I saw in episode of The Invaders later on last year (think it was an episode called "The Saucer") and an actor who I didn't recognise at first until it hit me (Anthony Dawson, who played Professor Dent in the first Bond film Dr. No. As soon as I recognised him, the episode was even better in my opinion).

Fair play to Talking Pictures for showing the end credits in the correct manner, bearing in mind it's a free-to-air channel. Not content with chatting through the end titles, Sky Movies also began the practice of squashing them several years ago now - and these are channels you have to pay to watch.

Sampled an episode of sort-of soap opera Together last night (from the second series). Had a surprise (in a good way), when in the last scene I recognised a familiar face from eighties Australian soap opera drama series Return to Eden (actor Daniel Abineri).

Was checking Renown Pictures's website earlier (they have some connection with Talking Pictures TV as they show some television shows which have had a 'restoration' done by Renown), and discovered that last Sunday afternoon's new edition of The Footage Detectives was in fact the first edition of a third series (a newsletter post on the main page of Renown Pictures's website mentions this). This could explain why there was no new edition on Sunday 9th January (there have been something like four editions in both the first and second series). But I'm sure I didn't hear anything said on The Footage Detectives last Sunday that it was the first of a new series.

Who's post is this?
This post is mine.
I made this post.
He made this post...

Today's Footage Detectives was hugely entertaining and in my opinion the best one yet.

The first piece from pre war Germany was intriguing, and Mike Read clearly knows his ass from his Elbe, correctly guessing the river location. The final shots of pre war Dresden were a little sad, seeing how beautiful it looked before war intervened.

The English lesson with Hattie Jacques was absolutely hysterical. I got the impression that most of the cast knew how ludicrous it all was and were hamming it up rather deliberately. The husband's roving eye for the bather and the waitress - I pity his wife...

Noticeably Hattie was rather more professional. I have the impression that she would never do anything less than be professional.

And finally the footage of Radio Essex was good and showed how life really was on the pirate radio ships. A good idea to show this as it gave an opportunity for an interesting and informative talk from Mike Read. Rather shocking to hear how dangerous this all was at times.

And all their rows of tinned food!
Whose Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney Pudding is this?
This steak and kidney pudding is theirs.
It is their steak and kidney pudding...

Agree Cutback about yesterday's new edition of The Footage Detectives. The highlight for me was that Hattie Jacques 'Speaking English' segment (unintentionally funny), but in hindsight it was a very good edition.

I noticed with yesterday's edition that they were using ad bumpers. I feared Talking Pictures TV had been forced into adding a third ad break into the hour. There were two ad breaks close together. But I'm glad that wasn't the case (it's rare these days for an hour-long programme to have two ad breaks).

Yeah, but the total programme length is roughly 41 minutes with the chopping of the ads ( I use a Panasonic DVD recorder). Plus it always finishes 6 or 7 mins before the hour.

There was a programme on called The Human Factor, about 14.30 I think, which was all about Lonnie Donegan. I didn't realise this was a mini doc. Very good it was too.

And there's a recorded chat with Melvyn Hayes on today at 15.25 who's chatting with Frazer Hines at the Stockport Plaza in front of a live audience.

Yes, I'm aware each edition of The Footage Detectives finishes a few minutes before the end of the hour. Still, it's refreshing not having three ad breaks in an hour-long programme.

Watched last night, a repeat airing of a formerly 'lost' episode of sitcom The Dickie Henderson Show (called "The Maid"). Have to say this, if any more lost episodes are found, the more the merrier. Fast-paced (but not fast-paced for the sake of it) and most importantly, it made me laugh.

Checked the schedule section on Talking Pictures TV's website yesterday, and saw that in the new edition of The Footage Detectives being shown on Sunday 20th February, the programme description mentions
[Show spoiler]Larry the Lamb.
Also, on the previous day, the channel is showing an episode of detective drama series No Hiding Place which I haven't seen on the channel before (it could have been shown before by Talking Pictures TV and I missed it, or this is the first showing on the channel).

Either this is the episode I was referring to when I had a look at the channel's schedules, or it's an additional episode of No Hiding Place I haven't seen which is coming soon. Why I say this, is because I spotted in next Wednesday's listings an episode of the detective drama series. However, it could be the same episode being repeated.

Talking Pictures TV schedule is sometimes a bit off in TV & Satellite Week (been reading this since issue 1.) Their website listings has about 4 weeks worth - which works well. The print schedule function is good too.

Lately, I've been checking mainly Talking Pictures TV's schedules on their website, although when I read the new issue of TV & Satellite Week each week I still look at their listings for the channel (I'm sure (although my mind could be playing tricks on me) that sometimes they didn't have The Footage Detectives listed (that's on each of the Sundays through this month).

In it's defence though, I find in general TV & Satellite Week's listings to be more thorough than other UK TV listings magazines (they have more channel listings, although they sadly still don't have listings for Forces TV).

I spotted two episodes of No Hiding Place on Talking Pictures TV next Wednesday and the early hours of next Thursday morning (episodes "Dead Ringer" and "Music for Murder" respectively). Got those set to record, and I may check out an episode of Stagecoach West (recorded an episode of Interpol Calling earlier).

Without a doubt. The Radio Times has a really messy layout, even though I buy it at Christmas.

I find the weekly newsletter sent out tells me most of what I wish to watch.

Dead Ringer is an interesting tale about horse racing, most notable for the appearance of the late great Peter Vaughan (Grouty from Porridge).

Music for Murder is very different and is something of a murder mystery with a number of suspects.

I haven't watched Stagecoach West but a relative did as she is a fan of MASH and said she enjoyed it.

I found Interpol Calling quite entertaining when it was first shown on the channel and it is only 30 minutes so it never outlast its welcome.

An episode of The Hidden Truth is airing on Talking Pictures TV next Monday evening (called "Sweets to the Sweet").

Enjoyed yesterday afternoon's new edition of The Footage Detectives. The highlight for me was the segment about the singer (which included an online chat with a Footage Detective and a relative of the singer). You couldn't take your eyes of them during the two songs they sang.

I definitely recognised the Dudley Hippodrome on a recent edition of The Footage Detectives (the last I read (in a local newspaper), it is indeed being demolished).

Watched tonight, the short documentary Derek Fowlds: A Part Well Played, which aired on the channel yesterday (Sunday) afternoon. The bit I was most interested about, was the actor talking about Heartbeat (his anecdote about the early years of the show and when it ended were very interesting).

Have to admit, that among his many TV credits, I only knew of The Basil Brush Show, Yes Minister (and it's follow-up Yes Prime Minister) and Heartbeat.

Hopefully next weekend, am going to watch film I Bury the Living (along with it's Cellar Club introduction by Caroline Munro).
