Thanks for the info.

I went ahead and ordered the standard edition since it's $35 on Amazon. I don't have any attachment to the dub since I watched my brother's DVDs subbed all those years back, and the new subtitle translation sounds like it may be a bit clunky but should suffice.

It's kind of a weird thing about some newer subs and dubs in general. It's like they try to be so literal to the point it sounds stunted in English.

Yeah, if you're not attached to the old dub or "Platinum" DVD subtitles then there's really no reason to pay 5x as much for the Limited Edition since the only other exclusive on-disc extra is the "Video Format" edition of EoE. As someone who has owned that version for several years now (on both Japanese DVD and BD), I can tell you that its minor differences to the theatrical version (and by extension Revival of Evangelion) aren't terribly interesting from anything but a historical perspective.

I think its a tremendously missed opportunity that the video format version of EoE doesn't begin both episodes with Cruel Angel's Thesis. That alone would convince me to watch it over the theatrical version.

While there was some retrofitting done to make the two halves of EoE more episodic (i.e. NGE on the title cards instead of EoE, separate ED credit rolls, and a "Next Episode Preview" for 26': Magokoro wo Kimi ni), I think that they made the right call back in 1998 when they didn't put the TV opening at the front.

You have to remember that EoE's first appearance on Japanese home video was split between two volumes (i.e. TV 25 + 25': Air on Vol. 13, and TV 26 + 26': Magokoro wo Kimi ni on Vol. 14) in which a TV episode was immediately followed by its corresponding half of EoE, which meant that tacking Cruel Angel's Thesis up front would've made the latter a bit too much like a mere TV episode. Of course this is just my speculation.

My ultimate set finally showed up after bouncing around Texas for a week. It's thankfully not broken, but these earplugs glued to a piece of cardboard are a poor excuse for disc spindles. If I actually planned to keep the discs in the case, I'd probably be more upset, but what's done is done.

Just email them. I emailed them asking about it earlier and they said:

Quote:
Thanks for getting in contact with us.

We are aware of a subs issue on some copies of disc 5. We are manufacturing new discs and will offer replacements to those who have flagged an issue with theirs. If you would like to be added to the list for when these are available, please get back to us with the following details:
  • Full name
  • Shipping address
So I did.

Also, while asking about this I mentioned some of the discs in my ultimate edition had those circular scratches and asked if it was possible to get replacements or something.
They replied:

Quote:
Yup, we can sort those discs too once we have the new ones available. Could you confirm which ones you're having issues with?
I told them which discs, which was most of them tbh, like 10/11 had scratches. Some of them were pretty minor, but I figured if I can get them replace with perfect condition ones, can't hurt to try.
They responded:

Quote:
If you're able to send some photos of the scratched discs, that would be great - we can then ensure that all of your details are logged to ship replacement discs once these are printed and ready.

I sent pics on Tuesday and am waiting for a response now.

I dunno, personally I would have enjoyed the full streamlining of 25' and 26' into the series with Cruel Angel's Thesis. I've always enjoyed how the song works for the generally more up-beat first half and the dark stuff for the second half, kind of shifting its purpose. At the start, its an exciting opening to a solid, self-contained adventure and then it becomes like a reassuring palate cleanser between the depressing, psychological arcs. Ultimately, I would have also appreciated more differences between the theatrical EoE and the home video format version. That's just me though!

I got a similar response from all the anime, the "some copies of disc 5" is quite a silly statement when two other distributors are doing a disc replacement.

Same. There's no way they were unaware of it, just language to minimise.

Cruel Angel's Thesis sounds different on episode 17. Reminds me of how it sounded wonky on the platinum DVDs back in the day.

Japanese stereo track.

Evangelion games have always left me disappointed as they didn't offer a quality mech fighting game, but here are some I'd like to recommend for anyone interested.

Tech Romancer (Dreamcast)

Virtual On (Saturn/X360/PS4)

Cyberbots (PS1)

Reel Steel (PS3/X360)

Zone of the Enders (PS2/PS3/PS4/PS5)

LBX (3DS)

There are more out there, of course.

While this is probably only of interest to hardcore completionists like myself who want a copy of every version of the Rebuild films, I thought it worthwhile to bring up that Amazon Japan's pricing for both the BD and 4K+BD releases of Eva 3.333 have absolutely cratered. Note that these releases are of the newly remastered version of the third film that had a Japanese theatrical release back in January 2021.

I would already have the 4K if it had English subs. One can hope for an English friendly version sometime.

If anyone had to submit a claim to GKids for their UE, they didn't offer me any replacement options, but did offer a $50 refund.

Not a big deal since my dent was pretty minor, but hopefully people with actual tears or more substantial damage get some other options.

Almost a month since my last response from ATA about replacement discs. No idea what's going on behind the scenes.
