I hadn't put thought into it before, but all the discussion in this thread has really lowered by opinion of the DC. Particularly this. Having Col. West be the assassin makes absolutely no sense and is outright stupid. The intent was to have a Klingon assassinate the Federation President in order to stop the peace agreement - why not have an actual Klingon, one of Chang's men, carry out the assassination?

With Col. West doing it, the entire conspiracy gets exposed should he get caught or killed in the attempt. If they just had a Klingon do it, even if he failed the attempt and was caught the facade could still hold.

It was an utterly pointless scene regardless. Soran is hours away from achieving his goal of getting back into the Nexus, so what good does knowing what Geordi knows good for? Soran says he 'needs' to know, but why? He isn't missing any vital component prohibiting his plans that Geordi knows about.

I want another Star Trek: The Motion Picture: The Director's Edition 4K update. Wonder how long till we get a teaser of some sort...

I particularly hate the Scotty "I bet that Klingon b**** killed her father" in the added torpedo count scene. It goes against the Final Frontier cheerful Scotty "I can't believe I'm drinking with a Klingon!" and at the recent banquet "Perhaps we're seeing some of that future here". It's just too dark a line for him and out of character as portrayed by James Doohan. At least to me anyway.

I always took it as Soran wanting to know just how much the Enterprise crew knew about his plans. But I'm glad they cut the rest of that particular scene, it wasn't needed.

Good news for anyone who collects soundtracks. La-La Land Records announced that they're going to issue a new soundtrack release of TMP's score. Details so far.
  • While using the same mixes as the last release, some changes were made that Mike Matessino described as "esoteric in character". He did note however that there is one distinction about the new edition that will be noted when it becomes available.
  • The album is being released as a direct tie-in to the Director's Edition and one of the changes being made is having the full version of Ilia's theme open the film score presentation instead of the trimmed down version that opened the previous release.
  • The third disc from the previous set is being dropped in favor of this release being geared towards the finished score. The original album program will be featured and will be "re-created from the remixed first generation master".
  • Other material outside of the film presentation and original album will be the early score cues.
  • The 'Inner Workings' track on this set will feature the more pronounced 'wind machine' noise that was significantly toned down in their original release. The 50th Anniversary Collection was the only time this track featured the wind machine at levels matching what was heard in the film.
So if you already have the 3-Disc set, you've got a tough choice to make. While this set does stem from the same mix that were used for the 3-Disc set, further work was done to make the listening experience a bit better and will likely include the film version of 'Inner Workings' that is not on the previous set.

Where’d you find those details? Any mention of the Adele cover of “A Star Beyond Time” she recorded recently?

Where did you find that info? I did see this posted from La-La Land Records:

This edition definitively presents the full film score on CD1, continuing through the start of CD2.

The program now begins with the long version of the “Overture,” reflective of “The Director’s Edition,” with the short version heard in 1979 now kicking off a section of “Alternates” on CD2, which feature early versions of major score cues that were later reworked.

Closing out the presentation is the enduring 1979 soundtrack album program, now re-created from the remixed first generation master material for consistent and superior sound quality throughout the set.

This thread at FilmScoreMonthly.com and following many of the contributers on Facebook (A necessary evil if there ever was one).

Be sure to read Mike Matessino's posts on that thread, especially when he talks about the very questionable history involving Sony and their supposed rights to the score.

Good lord. I already rebought the re-released Khan CD, I'm not doing it yet again for TMP and replacing an edition that was already supposed to be the targ's bollocks.

I prefer the term 'Tie-rack Motor' myself. And even with that 3-Disc set, it still missed an oppertunity to include the 'Inner Workings' with the pronounced wind machine, hence it's inclusion on the 50th Anniversary set released years later.

And since you mentioned it, why did you buy La-La Land's Khan set twice?

Heck yes! I could actually tell the difference in sound quality thanks to using the analogue back ups. Plus it's an official release that features the 'Epilogue - End Titles' as heard in the film without Spock's voice over. That was a big addition.

The discrete tracks are excellent as well. Starting 'Kirk in Space Shuttle' without going through 'The Eels of Ceti Alpha V' is very satisfying.

I didn't, I just doubled up on the "re"s there. I'm just miffed that these limited edition awesomest bestest thing ever soundtracks aren't anything of the sort.

I mean, worst case you could flip it on eBay and still leave with a tidy profit. This edition is more intended for a general release and people who missed out last time. The differences, including rebuilt original soundtrack on disc 2, will be pretty minor.

I don’t suppose there is any indication if or when the remaining films could be announced as 4K releases?

Would there be any reason to think the remaining films won’t be released? Has this set sold well?

There'll always be a release which includes a rare unused take where the mics pick up the second harpist letting out a particularly eggy guffer, or something like that.

It just keeps the old money machine rolling.

I mean, it sounds like the 3 disc was everything they could find, and the 2 disc is just the good stuff in a slightly different order and a slightly different mix. I'm going to be keeping both, but I think people will be happy with just the 2 disc. Besides, it'll visually match the WoK set!

And that makes the 3-Disc set a lesser product as a result? I'm actually happy for anyone who will be discovering Star Trek: The Motion Picture or missed out on the 3-Disc set will have the oppertunity to own a copy of the film's complete score at MSRP. I am not irritated about the whole "limited" aspect of it at all. My 3-Disc set is still one of my most prized soundtracks and this release doesn't change that one bit.

Ah, that’s more clear. You lost me when you didn’t contextualize what you meant by “removed the music”. I was like, “Uh, I don’t know about you, but it’s right there on my copy of the new CD set!”
