In that FilmScoreMonthly thread linked last page, Mike Matessino makes it sound like it was thrown together by Sony using whatever they could find, not knowing what they were putting on there.

Quote:
we actually tried to stop the 1999 release because we already knew "The Director's Edition" was happening, but the actions of certain parties caused Paramount to cave not only to let the release come out but also led to us being prevented from including an isolated score track as well the alternate score synced to picture on the DVD that finally came out in 2001.

The 3-CD set done in 2011-12 was from the original masters, as you know, and was done as an ultimate collection of music for this title. Subsequently there was a vinyl release of the main score. Both projects were a great success. But something you may not have noticed is that ALL references to Sony Music were GONE from the vinyl release. Why?? Because it turned out that the original 1979 Columbia Records soundtrack agreement was only for a 15-year term....which means the rights expired in 1994. Therefore... Sony Music had NO RIGHTS TO PUT OUT THE 1999 VERSION, which, by the way, used the incorrect performance for every single track that was added to it, with one small exception.

Paramount Music now controls the soundtrack rights to Star Trek-The Motion Picture and they have since 1994. (They simply didn't know it and they've had to work with Sony Music to settle things up from the past 22 years.) This is now THEIR "Expanded and Remastered Edition" and as far as I'm concerned it is the album that we had wanted to do in 2000, but of course with far superior audio quality that benefited from the involvement of Bruce Botnick and the first generation multi-track transfers, which were run in anticipation of the updated "Director's Edition" that's currently in the works. The 3-CD set is a glorious collectors item to be treasured, but this 2-CD version will now be THE soundtrack album, from Paramount, for Star Trek-The Motion Picture.

Jesus H Roddenberry - it's been TEN FOOKIN YEARS since the 3-disc CD was released?!? I'm so salty about this new release because I thought that 3-discer was just a few years old, but a decade on I'm down with getting a new edition

This is THE GOAT scored end credits ever!

It would be fantastic if LLL includes the period appropriate end credits music.

Did you feel that it was a substantial upgrade?
I heard instruments in the version that I didn't know existed. I don't want to use the word "clean", because that would imply scrubbing and I don't mean that. I guess I would say it has a great presence, like you really feel you're close to the orchestra.

I'll have to see what version of the TMP soundtrack I have, I may be interested in an upgrade.

As for the movie, I'm absolutely stoked for the new DE, but I really wish the SLV home video version would get some love too.

I love La La Land and FilmScore Monthly and other similar sites that remaster and sell boutique soundtracks, but man I wish they had options to buy their stuff in lossless digital formats. I got rid of my last dedicated CD player a few months ago, and while I really want the new STII soundtrack (and now the new ST:TMP release that's coming), I can't justify spending so much on a format I can't really use as much anymore. I've PM'd a few folks offering to pay for a lossless rip of the new STII, but so far (probably rightly ), no one has been willing. I suppose I could buy the discs, rip them myself, and then re-sell the discs (which I've done for a few other La La Land releases), but it's such a hassle.

That's really cool, although on first glance it looks like Craig wrote "CRAP TUX" as his signature.

Another version, can't they give some 20% discount to those who already own the 3 cd set.

I struggled justifying the new ST2 remaster after buying the earlier remaster.

For the TMP 3 cd set I even got a second inlay cover for free from La La maybe because it was first release that I could use later if the original fades due to sunlight etc.

It sounds like a there is a tweak to the sound, so eq I guess hopefully not narrowing of the soundstage. Also the full Ilia theme before the credits.

Any chance someone could relay this discount sentiment to Mike, these things aren't cheap especially if importing to the UK.

I'm not against this but asking us to buy again is asking a lot.

The Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan remastered soundtrack is worth it for those that really have a keen ear and want some of the new tracks/edits.

I find the EQ and mastering of the new release definitely worth while for my listening preferences and makes it a more pleasant audio experience. That said for others the original digital mastering EQ maybe preferable and the differences for some maybe too subtle to justify picking it up.

TMP 3-Disc release is a great set and frankly wish LLL would make a new run of it but for those who are principally interested in just the main score then the omission of the alternates and other misc takes should not be a great loss. Except for Bob James rendition of the Main Theme, now omitting that will be a tragedy.

Still cannot decide if the Shaun Cassidy track is sufficiently kitschy in its campiness to justify its existence but there is a female vocalist performance which is rather decent for daft lyrics.

What elements are the newly remastered TWOK soundtrack from? I remember the original TWOK release back in the day was using elements from the mixing of the film and not the score recordings, as you could pick up poorly muted sound effects and dialogue in tracks, including the Mutara Nebula battle.

”Disc One, and the additional score tracks on Disc Two, have been re-edited and remixed in hi-res from newly discovered 1st generation analog 3-track stereo tapes. The original soundtrack album has been newly remixed from digital-to-analog 3-track stereo tapes made in 1982.”

I remember a certain forum troll derisively dismissing my information that Rambo: First Blood Part II's restored CD soundtrack was from 3-track stereo masters when mentioning the Blu-ray 5.1 was remixed from mono because the sound elements had been lost.

Convenient he's not here now to apologize.

And this new Director's Edition is going to have an Atmos mix. Gosh, I can't wait to hear what they might have done with the score.

Last year they did an Atmos mix of the score as part of a separate project so the files are "ready" so to speak.

But is that the score in itself or the score if it was meant to be repurposed into a movie's sound field along with everything else? So I'm thinking they couldn't just drop it in and call it a day, there'd still be plenty of mixing decisions to be made even if the files are oven ready.

Yeah, that bit about new images from the DE piqued my interest when I read the LLL (e)mailshot.
