Just like there's a minimum world-building and detail needed for cohesion and interest, it can also be overdone. LOTR has such an in-depth background to it, it'd be an understatement to say that it was extremely difficult to make that determination.

Overall, I like 5 of the 6 cuts though, with TTT extended being the only one I don’t like (the theatrical cut is much tighter and tonally consistent). And luckily all versions are widely available.

Apocalypse Now, on the other hand… theatrical or gtfo! Coppola got it right the first time.
I want a custom cut with no "dwarf-tossing" and "Not the beard!" one-liners, and implications pipe-weed is marijuana.

Hello! I'm in Europe and the lack of information is driving me crazy so I signed up here to ask: are the DVDs in the US release of this region free? Amazons and Ebays only have the US import, the UK version is exclusive to some store that only ships to the UK. The Appendices wouldn't be a big loss because I have the DVD set but I really want to finally watch the Costa Botes docus, I don't want to receive the set only to find out they're locked to Region 1.

I have the UK edition, so I can't know for sure, but I would guess that they're Region locked like all DVDs usually are.

Interestingly, my EE set DVDs all have Region 2 marks on the discs for the movies, but no region marks for the Appendices discs. Not sure if that could mean anything.

Posted this over the Theatrical version thread. I'll post it here also.

Picked up the Theatrical Remastered Blu rays.

Having had the Extended edition Blurays for a few days before I returned them due to some issues, I can only say wow! Night and day difference between the old and these supposed 4K remasters. The Lord of the Rings title cards pop which I never noticed before and that green tint from the Extended editions is gone. I know some have some issues with the color tint changes and such, but watching them in motion look more than fine to me.

From the scenes that I saw I didn't notice that horrid waxy DNR look to Gandalf, Frodo, or Bilbo. However, I will say they do look like they were shot on the Arri Alexa cameras than on film.

Sound wise, that Atmos/TrueHD track wow! I'm truly impressed here.

The only pity the Spanish dub for fellowship is still old school 2.0 Dolby. However, having my sound system with Dolby Pro Logic II, it nicely put it back to something close to 5.1.

I'm going to watch the entire trilogy and give my feedback on these new Remastered Blu-rays. Though, from what I've seen I'm impressed.

Does anyone know the bitrate difference between the 2011 and the remaster? Are detail levels higher on the remaster? Thx

Yes, the fine detail is better on the new scan, but it is not a remaster.

I'm so conflicted - it's either the original release in the hardbox/folding lid with green tint on FOTR or plain thin packaging with equally boring, but different cover art but a great transfer.

Show off the box or show off the PQ basically...

I basically switched the discs out of the hardbox with the new releases. Yes, it requires you to buy both, but this way you have a nice box, with better quality releases.

The hardbox release is $75.90 brand new on eBay.

The 4K trilogy is on sale at Amazon for $67.49

The remastered trilogy in a shit case is $73.36

So I'll either get the first two together or the remastered on it's own. The latter is obviously smarter and a perfect compromise on PQ but if only they made the box thicker and harder, they wouldn't need the fancy lid or the booklets. I'd buy it ASAP.

Although maybe give the cover art for each case more detail too so it's not one flat colour...

Hello.
Does this new remaster extended edition (2021) have audio and subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese?
Thanks.

Thanks my friend. I saw the information on the website but as it is not always guaranteed I thought it best to ask someone who has bought it. Are you sure it has subtitles in Portuguese?

I know for a fact they are on the UHDs. I would think they would be on the BDs as well.

So for those of us that are dinosaurs still in 1080p land, what's the consensus on the best version of the theatrical cuts - are the original Blus still preferable, or does the recent 3-disc remastered set top those in all conceivable ways?

Apologies if this has been recently discussed.

I'd stick to the original blu-rays, personally.

I'd pick up the Remastered Blu-rays for $18 at Target. Just finished watching Fellowship and was pretty surprised and pleased with the image quality. Though, I do see some manipulation was done on the image, though didn't see any of the waxy messes that I've seen on other Blu-rays or in the original theatrical Blurays.. Faces are crisp and detailed just like the scenery. I thought I was going to notice something bad from reading the 4K reviews of them. However, I will say they do look like they were shot recently with Alexa cameras. The Atmos/ TrueHD track is a banger. About to watch Two Towers next week. So, I'd say grab it.

Waiting for Fellowship of the Ring EE remastered (either BD or UHD) to be released individually.

Sticking with the old EE's for the other films
