Think as a cinematographer……….

What I’m getting at is, that the guy who wore the cap on the Star Trek motion picture currently playing in theaters all around the country, obviously had a slogan on the front of his cap saying “I love lens flares and just can’t get enough of them”, well, the guy who wore the cap on John Adams probably had this slogan stitched on his hat……”I love ‘Dutching’ and just can’t get enough of it”.

Follow me?

P.S.
If that YouTube link doesn’t work for some because you get a funky JavaScript error and don’t know how to correct it, I can find another link for the video above using a circuitous route.

Not sure, but does that mean tilting the camera at an angle off horizontal? Such would seem to be a common thing with all the shaky cam work we see in movies these days. "Hey, camera flunkie! Get a tripod!"

When I see over the top shaky cam work, I imagine the camera guy on set bobbing around all over the place like he's suffering from cerebral palsy. Then the director slaps the camera guy on the back of the head, "stop that!"

Roger Christianson did that on Battlefield Earth, just a small cog in what made that film so epically bad, not a single shot was level

Looks like the answer has now become public:

I LOVED two episodes this season, so I will DEFINATELY be getting this set.

Hey, cut the man a break! With material like that to work with, he's gotta screw around with something to get himself through the shoot.

That’s a Roger………and not just “off horizontal”, in this series the angles are as extreme as they are plentiful.
I mean for cripes sakes, Dutching should be used sparingly for a visual effect, not during relaxed scenes, action filled scenes, emotionally thoughtful scenes on………..close-ups, long shots, establishing shots, etc.

Not to mention the fact that there is also a prolific amount of short-side framing.,,,,,IMHO.
But, wha do I know about this camera and post stuff anyway ……………………

If Borias don’t have a problem with John Adams, then neither do I, because canines rule!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HGAAhseHks

Just for some perspective, I don’t know if most/any? home theater enthusiasts will have a problem with this Blu-ray purchase as the acting and writing probably will easily compensate for the overt Dutch bludgeoning; however, most pro lensers will find it considerably distracting and ask themselves – “Why” ?

P.S.
Bobby, what the hell is a “wild feral "razorback" pig”? That phrase sounds ominous in itself.
Got any pics or links?

There is one appropriate "shakey cam" scene (that I know of) in a Stanley Kubrick movie.
For today's trivia test, name the movie and the scene. Extra points if you can explain the director's intent.

If you need the movie name, highlight the following line:
[Show spoiler]2001: A Space Odyssey

That's a neat little horror film set in the Australian outback directed by Russell Mulcahy from 1984. I don't think it's even out on DVD in region 1 but it was a VHS sleeper hit back in the day.

I don't have any pics of my own, but if you do a Google image search of "feral pigs" you'll find some good photos. Feral pigs scare the hell out of me. They're really fast. Their tusks can slice up a lot of things. I'm not going to be snapping photos of one nearby. Instead I'll be grabbing for a rifle and/or retreating to my vehicle or up a tree!

A lot of states in the US have serious problems with wild pigs. They breed like crazy, tear up crop land and will kill and eat many animals smaller than them. It's a pretty serious environmental problem.

My boss has had them before (he lives in the next county over).

Thankfully, the only pigs we get in our yard are ones that have escaped from neighbors' yards... including one baby one in the last few weeks.

We did have some VERY large pigs go "hog wild" here when I was a kid and tear up some stuff... but I don't remember any of them with tusks, and I vaguely remember them also escaping from somewhere nearby.

Yesterday, I noticed some goats got loose across the street, but thankfully, I don't believe they were feral either!

Based on a bit of the theme song stuck in my head (yes, I'm ooooold), I searched out Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines on Wikipedia. The cited Wikipedia entry really bumped up my appreciation of this film.

What also excited me was that it was filmed in "70mm Todd-AO". This ought to look great on Blu-ray, assuming that the OCN is in adequate shape (Mr. Harris might know?).

I'll finally break down and ask: does anyone know whether this film has been sighted for BR release and when?

Hey Jeff, do you have any insight on upcoming anime releases on blu-ray?

specifically Ninja Scroll or the Studio Ghibli lineup?

someone asked in the anime thread, and, I immediately thought of you.

Thanks!

(this is an open question to anyone who may have information)

You don't want the current HD master of Ninja Scroll, trust me

The only Blu that Manga is planning to my knowlege is Ghost in the Shell

Studio Ghibli lineup will not come out here till after Japan almost certainly. Decemberish for Ponyo, but expect Japan to get catalog titles months before we do except for maybe a token few with Ponyo. The price differences are just too great and now that we're all one big happy region, it works against us

On the upside if you want them early, the US cover art has been universally awful and the Japanese good for the DVDs

can you elaborate on the Ninja Scroll master?

hasn't Bandai shown the other studios how they can benefit from adding their catalog to the high-def arena?

Bandai, due to a variety of reasons hasn't exactly moved piles of discs. They also have a huge benefit of holding rights across all major territories, so if they sell 6000 discs in Japan and another 6000 overseas total between NA and Europ it's not a tragedy. A US distributor has to make all their money here

Ninja Scroll master was done years ago and has virtually no cleanup, nor does Manga have a good clean source to do a new one from. Your best hope is for a US/Japan/Europe collaboration to spend the money on it. The current one also suffers from Manga's trademark "mud" color timing.

The only thing really going for us is that NS is way more popular here than it is in Japan, so they'd be less concerned with protecting the home market. Funimation's Evangelion 1.0 Blu-ray delay and the fact that it's taken GITS 2.0 so long to get here should give you an example of what we're looking at in the future for non Bandai-style distributions.
