Personal taste has little to do with how many Oscar nominations a movie got. I know that Titanic is well made, well acted and got a lot of Oscar's, but I still hate it.

Eraserhead got no Oscar's or nominations, and that is my favorite movie...

And there is a reason why it only won three out of those thirteen it was nomitated. Same goes for BAFTA's and Golden Globes.

Good afternoon,

A quick note - Last Year at Marienbad is housed in one of those digi-cases Criterion used for their first batch of Blu-rays.

Our review will be up soon.

You are forgetting the fact that it is an incredibly great honor to get Oscar nominations. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button received thirteen nominations! That says that the quality of this film is outstanding. And it surely is.

That's strange. I don't really care, but it's weird that they would skip one and release it in the original packaging. I wonder if they had the case prepared back in December (when the Resnais article was posted on the website).

I can barely afford them at the snails' pace...... I'd hate to think of the morally despicable acts I'd have to resort to if they released more

By the way..... shameless plug..... but go to the Moonlight Gardens in Coney Island on the 4th of July...... hottest show in the Nati

alright, I have The Seventh Seal, For All Mankind, and Kagemusha preordered.

if amazon would charge me right away I'd actually be more comfortable preordering everything coming down the chute but as is I know I'll forget and overspend before these charges hit.

but I'm still very happy. I'm just trying to decide if I should start on the ones I've missed or focus more on picking these up as they come... maybe both I always forget how satisfied I am after a criterion purchase vs. almost any other purchase.

Well, actually nominations don't say anything. Even movies like Norbit have received Oscar nominations.

Good point! I think the Oscar's have lost most of it's credibility. Denzel Washington getting an Oscar for Training Day, and Ellen Burstyn NOT getting one for Requiem for a Dream...

I rest my case.

How is Norbit's single make-up nominations relevant to Benjamin Button's 13 nominations including best picture, director, adapted screenplay, and actor?

Why would you hate a movie that's well-made and well-acted?

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to come to the conclusion that Denzel Washington gave a damn fine performance in Training Day. Sure Russell Crowe was neck and neck with him, but someone had to win. Those two performances were far and away the two best of the year. Washington was a very deserving winner. Ellen Burstyn did some great acting in Requiem for a Dream and she probably should have won Best Actress over Julia Roberts, but the fact remains that Roberts also gave a great performance in Erin Brockovich. It's certainly the best work she has done to date.

While I'm agreeing with your side of the arguement Starkiller, I think he's referring to it having high production values.

What I've always wondered is how does someone become a voting Academy member? Do you have to be in one of the guilds (writers, actors, directors, etc...)? Do you just have to be "In the know" of Hollywood life?
Basically what I'm asking is if I were to write, call, e-mail, the Academy and say I want to become a voting member, would they allow me to join? I wonder if there's a fee, if so it's probably astronomical so that's only Hollywood-types can afford it. Maybe you have to be asked to join, like somekind of secret society.
Just curious if anyone knows.
