Actually your last brief and disconnected response to my explanation showed that you had not understand what I meant at all. This latest message shows you also haven’t understood what JupiterMission meant either.

Is there any evidence that Criterion slowed their Japanese film output because (or even at the same time) they started releasing more female-directed and African-American-centric movies?

Not solid evidence, but since then there’s only been about two Japanese releases that I can think of (The Human Condition, Onibaba). The years prior were slowing down already but not to this extent.

All I know is I really hope we get a Pink Flamingos and Inland Empire announcement on Tuesday. I’m a simple man with simple taste; like these simple family friendly films.

If you need evidence of Criterion's diversity of releases getting different treatment, look no further than this website. Their main Criterion reviewer often can't be bothered to review films by or about black or feminist artists and themes. So they either don't get reviewed, or have to be passed off to someone else who cares enough. Just look at the last year of releases. How in the world does even Melvin Van Peebles get overlooked?

With that said, I didn't buy a single Criterion during the flash sale because I moved overseas over 3 months ago and all my blu-rays are in boxes back in my storage locker in NJ. However, I have been enjoying watching an assortment of streaming movies on my new Epson EF-12 projector! I kicked it off with Blade Runner! Man, who remembers that Criterion laserdisc? Don't worry, I didn't watch the laserdisc here!

NOTE: Not my photo.
Glad to see Criterion bringing out Blade Runner even if it doesn’t add to the diversity tally. I wish it was on a more modern format than laserdisc but I guess we shouldn’t complain.

Warner Archive's George Feltenstein touched on that for Warner's catalog, stating that even though plenty of films were in HD on their streaming services, they weren't really Blu-ray ready, and they still needed to go back to the start and scan the original negatives to get a proper restored master out on BD. I know some are in the group that are willing to accept "good enough HD masters" on Blu-ray, but are they the majority of Criterion customers? Criterion also has to contend with the possibility that doing that could hurt their brand/image, if it appears they're not really putting much effort in hundreds of potential future releases.

I also think Criterion has greatly benefited from having their streaming service to the point where there is less incentive to churn out Blu-rays of their catalog at any increased rate.
For counterpoint, consider me one of the people who'd rather get a 1080p unrestored blu-ray than no blu-ray at all.

At the suggestion of a friend, I have subscribed to the Criterion Channel for its free trial. But after the 13 days, I'm out.

While I'm in, I'll watch those Criterion titles I'm interested in that are in 1080p but not on blu-ray (e.g., Scarlet Pimpernel), but that's it. If/when they're ever on blu-ray, I'll buy them in that format; preferably restored, but unrestored if no other option is available.

I like physical media. I don't like streaming. I doubt I'm alone.

For example: The Moment of Truth, The Organizer, Blue is the Warmest Color ($24.95 SRP), Summer Interlude, Letter Never Sent, etc.

It seems like these releases were replaced with the streaming service (Filmstruck then the Criterion channel) and boxed sets.
Pity. For the titles I'm interested in, I'd be very much interested in light-on-extras blu-rays at a lower price, if it's a choice between those and no blu-ray release of the titles at all.

I have no use for the streaming service -- at least, not beyond its free trial.

There are hundreds of films on the channel that will never get a physical release, so for me and I'm sure many others, the Channel is an incredible investment, and resource. Criterion also acquires hundreds of titles on there that they don't even have physical rights to, so there's a seemingly endless amount of films for me to discover. I also don't limit myself by what quality the film is in on there, and I never check that. If it's a movie that sounds interesting, I watch it.

I'm not an either/or person when it comes to Physical media vs Streaming. I think the channel perfectly compliments a physical collection. I know realistically, I can't own every single title that Criterion has put out on disc, so being able to see them first via streaming helps me prioritize what to buy (though I'll still do the occasional blind-buy regardless).

I don’t mind streaming because that helps prevent me from bad blind buying and right now with finances as they are, that’s the name of the game. I think I’ve saved cumulatively thousands of dollars keeping my subscription over the years. I’ve avoided so many blind buys that I absolutely would’ve regretted buying otherwise. And with space becoming an issue now, I’m also putting significantly more vetting in what I buy.

If there’s something I really like, I’ll seek it out physically or hope for it to come out eventually. I’m in no hurry, I’d rather have something substantial added to the Blu-ray and not just released bare. It wouldn’t scream priority for me because there’s so much out there to collect already. That’s largely why I’ve avoided some of their cheaper $30 SRP discs. I’m interested but they are at the bottom of the priority list or I’ll just watch them on the Channel.

I just wish I had the Channel as an option when I was goin ham with purchasing and bein irresponsible. It would’ve saved me even more money. I love physical media but there’s gotta be a line somewhere. I completely get where you are coming from though and that’s okay and reasonable.

For a while there I would've agreed, but the dusty ass scan for this release made me reconsider.

So if there was a service to rent physical media instead of streaming, you would do it? Or is ownership the primary factor for your preference for physical media?

Criterion usually releases a title on physical media only once and only rarely do they double-dip. So if it is a option, I prefer them to take their time and make it the best release possible, both in presentation and extras, than rush it.

My local public libraries has become my "Criterion Channel". They carry almost a thousand different Criterion titles on Blu-ray and/or DVD with added new titles every month. I get the advantage of watching the films on physical media for free without needing to pay and own them. It has enabled me to only purchase the titles that I know I love and can see myself re-watching. The downside is sometimes people steal the enclosed booklets/leaflets.
