Embargo still in place. Trekcore has taken down all their posts/tweets about it.

There are some curious grading changes and there seems to be some acute color fringing in a few shots that I do not recall being present in the prior 4K transfer. Now given it is a YT video and perhaps the final SDR grade will be better finessed but time will tell.

Also interesting some of the changes from the original TDE exclusive VFX shots such as the wide shot of the Enterprise docking with V'ger and the establishing shot of unclouded V'ger vessel above Earth with different lighting on the ship.

The EQ/audio levels on the YT video are terrible just a bloated mess.

It's a goddamn shame we're not getting at least a one week run exclusive to Dolby Cinemas. Shit I'd settle for a one night event.

It's ONLY a YT video but the skin tones look really bad, just this odd one-note orangey sheen. But it is ONLY a YT video so phasers aren't set to kill...yet

I think this was supposed to be announced either tomorrow or Thursday.
Maybe they will reupload it in 4K instead of sticking with basic 1080p.
Course most studios usually only upload in 1080p.

Anyhow, two weeks!

I managed to download it before it was made private.

Did anyone notice the downgrade in audio quality at 00:47 - 00:54? You'd think that's be made to draw a comparison to the improved audio via the atmos point, but that happens way later in the preview.

We also saw what could potentially be the first casualty from the original Director's Edition. In the shot where the wormhole asteroid blows up, the asteroid and wormhole effect are using the same elements that was used earlier in the sequence for the viewscreen. In the original Director's Edition, this wormhole had to be recreated in CGI in order to create that shot. But now that the team has access to the actual elements, they're able to use that same shot without loss in quality. Still curious on the alignment.

Was this edition on the last set that came out? I never picked it up and was waiting for stand-alone releases of each film.

As someone who is rather unfamiliar with this franchise (I only watched The Wrath of Khan for the first time a couple years back, for example - loved it tho lol), what exactly did they do with the first film in this case? How does it differ than the most recent UHD?

The changes are literally too many to list. There was a lot of material that was trimmed and other material was added back in. Some matte paintings and special effects were replaced with CGI more in line with what was originally intended before the movies original rushed theatrical release. Also the sound design of the movie was enhanced because they didn't have time originally to put in a lot of the Ambient sound. They've also recomposited some of the original effects footage to recreate in better detail some of the model work. Also this time around it will have an Atmos soundtrack. There are literally hundreds of changes. The director's Edition is actually about 4 minutes longer than the theatrical but many people say that the way it's been re-edited it makes the movie seem to go at a better pace.

Interesting. Now I'm curious to see how both cuts compare.

So the current UHD is the theatrical cut, then? Sorta makes you wonder why Paramount didn't just wait like 6 months and put this newer version into the UHD set to go along with the other films. I'd imagine they've been working on this for some time, but I guess Paramount wanted it to have its own separate release, which also makes sense.

Paramount had an anniversary date to hit: the 55th Anniversary of Star Trek. They couldn’t wait for the 4K HDR version of the Director’s Edition to be completed for inclusion in the new set. So it will make it’s debut on Paramount+ then have it’s own unique release with new and archival features.

Hundreds and hundreds of editing and visual effects tweaks for the DVD, V'ger knows how many new/enhanced changes we'll get in the 4K version!
