Then I hope you're not using a Panasonic UHD player to watch those DVDs.

Of course there are outliers, but obviously not enough to make Panasonic care.

No, I'm not using a Panasonic and that's really a shame because I would have bought a 9000 if this $1000 UHD player could play a DVD as well as a $70 blu-ray player. One of the biggest selling points of blu-ray and UHD players has always been their backwards compatibility. One player to rule them all is what I expect in a machine costing four figures.

For sure if DVD deinterlacing gets resolved, I'll buy the Panasonic UB9000. If Panasonic does not fix the problem, I'll most probably buy the Sony QD-OLED TV - I am hearing Sony will be guaranteeing great 720p upscaling to 4K.

Do realize, Panasonic advertised the player as a 4k player that supports DVDs, Bluray, UHD Bluray. If the player does not resolve the DVD Deinterlacing then its "false advertising" (their reputation is at stake for all future product marketing).

I am not alone - Vilya is another. Plus I personally know many others. Ask Geoff whether he'd be another or knows of others

LOL. 90% of all DVD players ever sold would fall under this category.

I bought the UB9000.

I have no complaints about my UB420 but it did get beer spilled on it and has been less reliable after that.
I figured this player should be everything the 420 was for sure as it's similar.
No worries about Dolby Video for me because I use a projector.
I figured "Get it while you can" and it's still available.

Reavon player was considered but my Panasonic player was very reliable so I stuck with that and price wise it's like right on the middle between what they offer.

I hope it plays me DVDs well.... I imagine it will but it's not a deal breaker if it doesn't because whatever I have left on DVD is probably on Prime Video for the most part.

I only recently updated one of my cherrished DVD. They rest of the ones I like are mainly because of the music on them like concert videos.

Definitly would be nice to get the 9000 for $90 off and pair it with the $70 Blu Ray player.

If deinterlacing is a problem with DVDs, would set the player output to 1080i fix the problem?

With a 1080i output, the TV should be able to do the deinterlacing

DVDs are 480i, thus needs to first deinterlace 480i to 480p <-- that's where all goes to ?**t?

Many forums members (player owners) are getting extremely frustrated with the DVD problem - a potential UB9000 buyer's comment: see post #9767 on https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...05030&page=489

I'm lucky: the problem seem to affect just NTSC content. I live in a PAL region so 99% of my DVDs are 576i

Honestly, I would buy a cheap standard BD player if I had this problem.

howtogeek.com reviewed the Sony A90J TV and said "It had no issues upscaling lower resolution content, and the TV can easily remove 24p judder from any source. So whether you are watching DVDs or catching a movie on HBO, you are guaranteed to get a phenomenal experience." If Panasonic doesn't resolve the DVD problem, I'll probably buy a Sony QD-OLED - I'm confident this TV will easily upscaled a DVD output to 4k. I'll just keep my Arcam DVD 139 player which does a great job in upscaling a DVD to 1080p output (it doesn't play Bluray).

I have the step down 77A80J. Upscaling is good but remember Garbage In Garbage Out which sadly applies to DVDs including the highest quality Superbit platters from Sony. Most TVs these days does a decent job with upscaling. If you have a Sony, Reality Creation might help a little bit with adding some finer details.

4K disc > 4K streaming > Blu-ray > HD streaming > DVD > SD streaming.

I recently took my old Oppo BDP-83 out to compare the DVD upscaling with the UB9000 and it blows it away. DVD's looked really good, sharp with film grain present. That wasn't the case with the UB9000 even if I adjusted the noise reduction to zero.

To be fair DVD's on the UB9000 are still watchable but yeah they have a very light noise reduction and light waxy look basically. Watchable but nothing impressive.

In future models Panasonic has definitely got to improve the DVD upscaling even if they think nobody cares. Well count me as one that does.

There probably won't be any future models. The people driving those 71% DVD sales or whatever are, by and large, not the people buying UHD Blu-ray players. Panasonic obviously doesn't care.

Actually, the BDP 83 is reputed to be the best dvd player ever- even beating subsequent Oppo's. So, a comparison no UHD player could win.

There is a "Progressive" option in the picture settings menu. You can select between AUTO/FILM/VIDEO. I have found on 576i DVDs that "Video" gives best results on my UB450. When set to "Auto" or "Film" even subtitles can suffer from jaggies and diagonal lines. Unfortunately this setting needs to be set every time you play a disc.

Thanks for the reply. Question, does your TV upscale a DVD to near
1080p PQ.

My Arcam DVD 139 Player is a high quality player and does a good job in upscaling to 1080p. I am just trying to figure out which way to go. Use Panny 9000 for Bluray & UHD Bluray with My Arcam hi-tech player for DVDs or my standard Bluray Sony player to upsample DVD to 1080p than to Sony 4k TV. Any recommendation.

BTW, Great spreadsheet- I have similar taste in movies (SyFy, Action, Epic movies & TV series)

I did a quick look on Oppo BDP-83 reviews. Impressive player. I do like my Arcam DVD 139 player which upscales to 1080p but doesn't play Bluray. I'll put Oppo BDP-83 in my potential list for solving the Panny DVD problem. Thanks.

We’re still talking elite level with subsequent Oppos though. Get any of their Blu-ray players and you’re set for DVD and Blu-ray. Kinda sucks needing to use two players (even if it was available at a decent price, the 203 isn’t an option for me, with its less than ideal SDR conversion), but you’re very well off with, for example, an Oppo 103 and a Panny 820.
