Paramount's SDR conversions aren't great so yeah, keeping an open mind here until the 4K HDR stream hits. Not long now!

The original Director's Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture was released on November 6th, 2001. This edition incorporates some of the added footage that was seen in the 'Special Longer Version' such as Uhura boasting about Kirk, McCoy's extended entrance, Ilia healing Chekov and Spock having sympathy for V'Ger before the climax.

That edition also incorporated a few new special effects shots that were designed and implemented with the intent of looking like it could have been created back in the day if the film had more post-production time.

The problem with the original Director's Edition was that everything was done in standard definition. Back in 2001 there was no 4K, blu-ray, or any home video high-definition releases. So when the next format eventaully came along, there was no HD source for the Director's Edition so for the past two decades, we've been stuck with that DVD.

For this new edition, everyone who worked on the original version was brought back and they've redone the film from the ground up. Not only is everything being done for a 4K presentaiton, they're also taking individual effect elements and re-rotoscoping them. The resulting video will not only look sharper than the previous presentation, it will also fix some of the issues that plagued the recent 4K disc, like the long shot of the Enterprise leaving Drydock.

So far, everyone involved has assured fans that a disc release will be coming. They just need to clear the Paramount + streaming window in order to get there. This is great news because this will give the crew even more time to work on the film if there is still any work needed to be done or any missed fixes they inded to incorporate. That happened on the TNG blu-ray sets.

As of this post, there has been no announcement for a release of the SLV on home video.

To be fair, I recall seeing many comments back then from various online pundits at the time that Paramount should be doing e the FX in 1080 resolution to future proof it, the one I recall most is Harry Knowles (of all people).
So, there were some of us saying that they should invest now or they'll have to redo it later and here we are.

And I would also like a copy of the SLV. Even a dump of the of old broadcast tape to DVD would be fine.

I got the impression the restoration team is being given a rather wide berth to do what they need to. I would hope this translates into a more hands-on release without Paramount's usual automated nonsense. Then again that's the logical thought process and these things are often anything but.

I'll counter that by saying that I was one of those people, BUT, if they did the 1080p version, maybe that's all we would have gotten, and not the 4K version.

True, but the fear at the time was that if they didn't do it then, they would *never* do anything again. The idea of a 4K do-over would have been considered a fairy tale.

Very glad to see this either way, I was born in 74, so this movie and the first Star Wars were my sci-fi awakening and will always hold a place in my heart.

I think a three disc UHD 4K set would be perfect for this release. A 4K disc with just the movie and commentaries and possibly an isolated score. A Blu-ray disc of the movie with the same extras as the 4K disc. And then another Blu-ray with all of the extras which by the time they're done is going to be an absolute ton. With all the carryover features probable new features it should get a disc of its own.
And I think that the bonus disc would be a perfect place for them to put the special longer version as an extra. They really wouldn't need to do a lot of work to have the special longer version in high-def in widescreen.

I've heard worse. Not only did studios mandate that the final product be completed in Standard Definition, they didn't even keep the original files. Usually when an original effects in a show is re-rendered in HD or even 4K, it's done by an effects artist that 'kept' the original files for themselves rather than the studio.

One element I hope they don’t restore from the 2001 version is the aspect ratio. I seem to recall it was cropped and wasn’t the full width of the original 2.40:1 frame. I really hope it’s 2.40:1 this time round.

It’s actually not so much cropped, the anamorphic stretch is just a little different making people and things look taller, and then windowboxed for overscan. So the aspect ratio is a hair different, but you aren’t really losing picture.

Indeed there are some new extra bits cut into this new trailer showing some more of the new VFX like the establishing wide shot of the crew exiting the Enterprise saucer and approaching V'ger.

The original upload remains private and the audio is still garbage.

I may opt to see it during one of the Fathom showings and ditto for Khan, assuming all remains quiet on the viral front, since I never got to see them on the big screen.

And dammit Jim the Enterprise reveal deserves to be experienced on the Big Screen, even if it is in a slightly trimmed down form. Warp Factor 9!

Looks like at least one new deleted scene has been found, per the Fein interview on ST.com:

Quote:
For fans of the film, Fein also has another big surprise he revealed during the interview. “There's a deleted scene that we wanted to have back 20 years ago,” he said. “This was Ilia and Scotty and Decker in engineering. We found some of the footage 20 years ago, but there was no audio, so there was really no point in showing the scene. But it's three or four scenes that people have wanted to see forever. So we re-transferred that footage… and we found out that Bob looped the dialogue for the scene. Now that scene's going to be included in the physical media release and others, because he looped a few. And we found other key scenes that are just fantastic.”
