I told myself I wouldn't get the streaming service to see this but wait for the UHD. I don't think I will be able to wait now.

Makes me wonder whether they downloaded the P+ video and reuploaded that.

And neither one was uploaded in 4K.

Not really surprising. YouTube has always had some garbage compression.

Looks like I'll be signing up for Paramount+ for a month in April before cancelling again.

2021 Theatrical* Blu-ray
[Show spoiler]
2001 DE DVD

2001 adjusted

Did they actually stretch the theatrical edition's geometry on the UHD release? Wow that annoys me when this happens. I can't stand it when the geometry is stretched - everything looks off to me. I haven't watched my disc yet. Why wasn't there more talk about this in here if they stretched it? From those screenshots it does indeed look stretched/vertically squashed.

Did they do the same with the other 3 titles in the set or was it just the first film?

There was an audible difference between the two. The audio on the former wasn't great, but the latter sounded more hot and "crunchy," with some distortion on the s's and things like that.

Every time you remaster an anamorphic movie, you’ll get a slightly different aspect and crop.

I'm not really a fan of the modernized effects I'm seeing. Thought I'd want this one, but will probably just stick with watching the older one.

Agree, with 005.

Plus most films have typically been framed in a manner that accounts for about 10-15% of the outer perimeter of the frame to not be vital picture information due to the variable nature of striking prints and ultimately the variations that occur with projection.

This was also done with TV production to account for overscan.

So having a high quality scan of the full frame from film being cropped by that small percentage 10-15 is not a major concern. Even if an earlier transfer may have shown a little extra information or the optical geometry various a small amount, not a big deal.

Good lord, don't start yourself spiralling down another rabbit hole. It's the DE DVD that got squeezed a bit, making them look a bit thinner than they should, complete with slight bordering on the sides to fill out the aspect ratio. The geometry has been corrected on newer transfers.
