Default Planet Earth Original

I absolutely loved the Planet Earth series, and was really looking forward to it coming to blu-ray, and then they changed the narrator. I know he is an award winner, etc. I just really enjoyed Sigourney Weaver's narration, and wish they would make another set with her narration.

I love PE. But I think the image quality suffered due to the shared encoding with HD-DVD.

VC-1 does a terrible job with lower quality footage. For instance the "caves" scenes used low-light (i.e., high-noise) digital and film. VC-1 dumped tons of the noise and took some of the detail with it. Blacks and shadows were flooded with this non-Gaussian "filtered" looking noise.

I would instantly buy BD-50 high-bitrate versions where noise is more natural, and detail is preserved.

Is it the same video quality as the BBC one? (i.e. they simply took the encoded video from the BBC version and stripped out Attenborough's narration and replaced with Sigourney's voice?)

Umm, David Attenborough is the ORIGINAL narrator of Planet Earth; it's Sigourney Weaver who is the replacement!

But if you insist, you can purchase the version with Sigourney's narration from Discovery's web site. This version is also shorter than the original, to make way for commercials...

Your post is incorrect.

David Attenborough is the original narrator and the Discovery Channel inexplicably hired Sigourney Weaver to redo the narration in the belief that American audiences would want an American narrator.

I'm not sure if this was covered previously and I am not willing to wade through 28 pages to find out.

Personally I would prefer to listen to Attenborough over Weaver anyday. He is a world-renowned naturalist who really cares about the subject matter whereas Weaver is an actress who is just picking up a paycheck.

You dont really know much about her do you? She has spent the last 20 years involved in issues with the environment, wildlife preservation, she quit acting for a long time to focus on it, and has donated millions to these causes. That's why they chose her. Learn the facts.

Default Christmas Late Evening

Had a lot of company today. Played two disc from Planet Earth
Great when you have a house full of people and a none dancing party.

I have probably done this 3 or 4 times now.

Hope everyone had a great day!

Your post is incorrect. I suppose Jolie, Damon, and DiCaprio are just around for the paychecks too right? No celebrity could ever possibly care about anything behind themselves right? Sigourney Weaver has done more for the environment than you could ever dream of while you were sitting behind a computer screen *****ing about narrators.

i am not disagreeing with you by any means with regards to ms weaver or the others you mentioned, but i have to agree with the OP in that i really do not understand why they replaced sir david attenboroug in the first place. i am not taking anything away from the work she did, but sir david has been the definitive face and voice of naturalist programming for decades. i suppose i am biased, it just seems i grew up hearing his voice.

Basically, sales. That's what it pretty much all comes down to.
