If anyone got the recent La-La Land Records release of this film's soundtrack, I made this custom artowrk for the occasion. La-La Land themselves stated this soundtrack was made to coincide with the release of the new Director's Edition so why not?

It’s outrageous, they’re actually both wrong! The film REALLY looks something like this:

I wouldnt base anything on this trailer, their is compression rubbish, no grain, the audio hasnt been bad since the VHS so to think they would screw up now is very unlikely.

It is a trailer done by the same team that did the Godfather trailer and gave us two weeks of have they changed the car explosion scene?

Dont worry we will nurse maid you through these concerns until the disc arrives in September.

Im sure both wouldnt worry so much about their waist line with released like that.

Amazing that Chris Pine is the inspiration for the Doctors attire in 200 years or so.

Sorry, bit I have not been following this thread. Robert Wise was alive when the DC came out originally, but is long since gone when this was made? Any reason they couldn't just re-render the old in a higher resolution or would that be too off-putting? Is this more of a fanedit? Calling it a director's version when he is not involved sounds like a blatant lie.

September is a long ways out for the 4k uhd disc but I'm happy this is coming. Passing on Paramount+ but probably will catch a theater screening if one is within a reasonable distance of my house.

They regrouped the crew who originally worked with Wise to realize The Director's Edition. Literally could not get a better set of people to redo TDE.

These folks kept records on what was done and perhaps some loose ends that were intended to be addressed during that original process two decades ago but for whatever reason were not possible then.

It appears from the few shots we have seen in the trailer and some early pictures that much of the new restoration work is a close replication of those original efforts.

There clearly has been some changes but those deviations do not appear to be anything sufficiently substantive enough to be overly concerned about or get bent out of shape.

I don't know why that would be.

For ST: TMP should be,

Scan 0.700" x 0.838" aperture, expand image 2x horizontally,
for example using the RP-40 alignment film:

No rockect science about that

But some video transferers seem to have this idea that zooming in and playing around the IM (intended image) up and down and left and right is a great thing, "improving" the image.
I've even seen one of them boasting about it on an audiophile music forum.

But don't get me started on the automatic "1.66" transfer of "European" movies, opening the matte and/or cropping the sides to make it "fit the legend".

Also as the cat sez, DVDs have special geometry, everybody thinks of them as 1.33 but actually they're ~1.37 if they follow broadcast standards where 480 x 720/576 x 720 MPEG-2s are a shape connected to the 1.333 486 x 711 and 576 x 702 NTSC / PAL standards so you have to unsqueeze (expand horizontally) many DVD images captured by computers in "4:3"(or their 16:9 derivative) by ~1.025x to have the proportion they would have on a broadcast standards monitor.

The war that occurred when they compared the squeezing of the Barry Lyndon DVD images vs the BD without taking that into account...

Very happy this is finally coming out. It seems there won't be a blu-ray only release, but I'll buy the 4K, keep the blu-ray and sell the 4K. I'm just happy to see something go right for Star Trek again.

This. I’m a lifelong Trekker and have always been one of TMP’s most ardent fans (in many key ways, it’s the most purely TREK film of them all), but eff streaming. I just gotta make sure not to die between now and September.

I cut cable almost two years ago after Spectrum raised our bill to $150/mo. Bought an HD antennae for $30, pay for Disney+ ($4.17/mo.), Prime Video (included with $139/yr. Prime membership), YouTube Premium ($11.99), HBOMax ($14.99/mo.) and Hulu ($12.99/mo.). Hardly ever use Netflix anymore ($15.49/mo.), might cancel that after Stranger Things S4. So roughly $71/mo. for all that. Don't miss cable at all.

The original plan was to re-render everything in HD and remaster the video in HD as well, a few years down the line, when HDTVs became the new hot item. Because it was a project paid for by Wise himself, with some assistance from Paramount Home Entertainment to cut the red tape at Paramount Pictures, everything was done at SD resolution and when the time came to do HD for HD-DVD/Blu-Ray and HDTV broadcast, the corporate interests who controlled Star Trek properties were both bitterly divided and apathetic towards the franchise, so the remastered DE was left in limbo as a casualty of politics and infighting. To make matters worse, the VFX company behind the project had went under not soon after the work was completed and it's VFX assets lost forever with the liquidation of it's servers, with only the team members retaining their own copies of whatever they had worked on. All the shots had to be re-created for this new version.

The work done for this version of the DE is in-line with what Wise had intended and laid out in his original efforts and with what he wanted to do but was unable due to the money simply not being there to complete work that needed to be done. So, he was very much involved in the overall planning, despite being long dead when the execution finally happened.

Not even the free trial? You wouldn't even stream this for free?

I can't wait for this (and The Batman on HBOMax) in April. Laid up at home recovering from foot surgery, spent a month in the hospital, can't go to the cinema until May (hopefully).

Anyway, I'm streaming this in April, going to see the screening in May, AND buying the 4K in September. Bring it on...

Nah, that’s just a headache to follow up on, and it won’t look as good as the disc, and it sends a message to Paramount that I support this “streaming exclusive” shit. I’ve lived this long without the ultimate rendition of TMP. What’s another half-year?

I am so ****ing excited for this. I could watch TMP in any of it's different cuts day in and day out but the fact that I'll have a physical disc of The Director's Edition to watch on my birthday, which is the same day it came out (although not the same year I was born which was 1987) makes me stupid happy. I'm geeking the **** out right now.

That "JJ lens flare" is a recreation of the same shot from the 2001 edition.

Not every glint of light in a movie is a disaster, folks.

Looks good. Will be looking to buy this one. Shame to see people crying about it. That kind of behaviour is more suited for STD!

Seriously though, nice to see the film get some love.
