That explains the difference in quality, I think.
also a combination of shitty YT compression

That would basically be the equivalent of Paramount including each individual TNG episode in SD along side it's HD version. It would be redundant. This isn't a whole new cut like Godfather III is, It's a 4K rebuild of the 2001 Director's Cut. It is a very similar process to what was done with TNG for it to be released in HD. If you want to see the old SD version, It's readily available on DVD.

Now the Special Longer Version, THAT is something I wouldn't mind seeing as an extra.

Just show any given shot from the 79 version versus the 2001 version versus the 2022 version. That way the viewer could see the 79 theatrical version versus the standard definition CGI versus the 4K brand-new CGI. That would take a lot less time than 2 hours and 16 minutes of the director's Edition in standard def.
I hope we get a feature about re-making the Director's Edition. Comparassions between the 2001 and 2022 DE would be perfect there.

Forgive if this has already been asked (or answered). The Director's Edition is being sourced from "the original camera negative". Was this true for the 4K Theatrical Release also or was it just mastered from a good film print?

This just came out in 4k last year , Aside from the 4 minutes longer run time , Is this a new 2022 transfer ? Why didn't they just put this out in the box set .

It wasn't finished yet.
Either they waited to release the 1-4 movie boxset and make sure this 2022 release was included or they just wanted grab your money again. I reckon they went for the latter.

I'm just waiting for a 1-6 or 1-10 movie box with everything included and that may take a while.

Another question I have concerns the six minutes of live-action footage that were first seen in the special longer version that were added to the director's Edition in 2001. Considering that the print that was used for the director's Edition was in horrible condition the added footage could not possibly have looked worse by comparison but will the added footage look inferior to the other footage that was taken from the original camera negative?
Because now you're having footage from the original camera negative going up against footage that was found in a vault and probably not nearly as well-preserved. I'm talking about things like the Spock Tears Scene and the self-destruct sequence and the scene where Sulu says "he wanted her back he got her", etc.
From what I have seen posted previously it sounds like when they did the Directors Edition back in 2001 Paramount were not very forthcoming with material but this time they opened the gates and gave them whatever they needed so not impossible they were able to source exactly what they needed from previously unavailable high quality material (the fact they have been able to get the individual elements to re-composite the shots leads me to believe that all the negative even stuff they believed they would never need again has held up well)

Both from the neg I believe.

The difference being last year's 4K release used the as-is composite optical work from the neg (which is dupe material basically) and blasted it with temporal DNR. This one is going back to the surviving components and recompositing them, so they should both look better and not have the old matte lines. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the issues I had with the theatrical 4K release (the DNR on effects work) will be absent here.

I haven't a clue if they archived all the cut material as neg offcuts - but if they kept all the effects components they may well have.

As much as I'm excited to see this, I'm equally as excited for all of the special features. I used to be one of those guys that would buy a set and watch a film multiple times with different commentaries and watch special features day in and day out. Not so much anymore, but with this, I'll make an exception.

Every piece of marketing for the Director's Edition has always focused on the new visual effects, but the one thing that has had a much broader impact on how this film feels different is the new sound design. SO MUCH more is happening with this rendition of the film than the previous one. New ADR lines, an Atmos mix, ect. I wish there was a featurette on just the sound design alone.

I don't know if anyone here hangs out at filmscoremonthly.com, but Mike Matessino has been incredibly generous on the Star Trek: The Motion Picture Re-issue thread. His posts are totally worth checking out. If they could get him to talk about the sound design whether it be the new sound mix or Jerry's score it's be one of the more interesting features on this set.

I've got my fingers crossed that this turns out well. I was pretty disappointed with the 4K release of the theatrical version. Some shots looked great, but many of the effects shots had some kind of weird smearing on the ships.

Those smeary shots were definitely a result of Paramount's process of restoring TMP, most likely trying to make up for generational loss in film composited VFX shots via DNR, as those same exact shots reused in TWOK, which might've been a generation further away from the negative due to the fact they were reused, looked miles better due to Technicolor(?) and Nicholas Meyer overseeing that restoration.

For the director's cut of TMP however, the VFX, depending on the shot, are either CG rendered in 4K or original film negatives/elements scanned in at 4K and composited digitally, meaning there isn't any loss in quality.

Where did the site get the info that this will be released on Blu-ray when the press release only mentions 4K UHD?

Won’t be released as a standalone Blu, but the 4K disc will include a Blu-ray too.

But isn't the Blu-ray for extras? Or is it a copy of the movie in 1080p?

I'm sure that a regaular Blu-ray release of the DE will come out but it'll be sold seperatly like most Paramount 4K releases these days. Unless there are enough extras for DE to warrent including the 1080p disc like with the other Star Trek 4Ks.
