I always appreciated what they tried to do with that, but the geometry always felt off.

Worked the graveyard shift and decided to watch this as the day ended. Not a fan of the glittering outlines of the credits.

I was hoping this version of the Paramount logo would be used, but they went with the static vintage version instead.

Can definitely tell the audio has been remastered as the ADR lines sound clearer and I believe in some cases are alternates. Disappointed to still see several blue screen spills in many of the faulty special effects shots of the original. It appears only some elements were recomposited, but definitely not all as reported. The observation lounge scene with Kirk, Spock and McCoy is pretty dodgy with the outlines of the actors pretty apparent with a loss in quality noticeable and won’t do any favors in 4K. The final shot with Spock and McCoy wearing opposite colors on their jackets was fixed.

No, was my image. I sampled a bunch of scenes at work because I couldn't wait. About to watch the film proper on home theatre. Need to eat first though!

That was fun. Faithful to the old DVD of the Robert Wise cut, just spiffed up a bit for modern tech. In other words, you've already seen it, it just has some new cosmetics.

Any concerns regarding the picture? Understand this is just a stream but anything that stood out to you regarding lack of grain etc…?

DB -- sadly I'm recovering from emergency foot surgery and almost had to have an amputation. I've fought that off, but healing has been slow. I don't have access to my 4K Bravia and I'm watching everything in bed with my HP Elite, and even though it has a huge 17" screen for a laptop, I'm in no position to give you an A/V review. It sure looked like film to me, that's the best I can tell you.

Here's the fellow who did the bonus features for The Lord of the Rings and Star Trek: The Next Generation and produced Free Enterprise...he just left a theatrical screening of the 4K version on the Paramount lot...said the film has never looked or sounded better.

I don’t recall it being said that they were going to recomposite everything, I think that was more of an assumption. But they weren’t going to find every scrap of footage for every VFX scene because the work was split across so many vendors at the time. They’ve found more than ever before but ironically enough some of it is for deleted scenes and unfinished shots that weren’t put back into the movie.

Having watched a little more than half of this on Paramount+, beyond the cosmetic changes, what stands out to me is the restoration/remaster of this thing. It better than what Paramount did with theatrical cut remaster last year. Easily, in my opinion. I think this looks pretty fantastic.

Would I be right in assuming that there are no new editorial changes to the Klingon sequence (beyond what was already altered in 2001)? In other words, the sequences from the Apogee showreel have not been included?

It’s not showing up for me yet. Is anyone else having this problem?

If it makes any difference, I’m getting Paramount+ as a “channel” via apple tv. I wonder if they’re just dragging their feet getting it live there. I sure hope this isn’t some bs where you can only see it by getting a subscription directly through the service itself. That’s exactly what happened with Short Treks if I recall.

So, it’s not the Apple TV Channel yet. I looked all morning. But, there’s a way to get your TV Channel credentials from Apple to work on the Paramount+ app and that’s where it is.

Finished it. Stunning restoration work. Truly. I hope and pray that Paramount releases a six film 4K UHD set that includes this Director’s Edition. While, I don’t know the ins and outs of what this use to be compared to now, I have no real complaints based on what I just saw. The disc will be better for sure and September can’t come soon enough.

Maybe both cuts of The Undiscovered Country next year in April...

I watched it on a very small screen so therefore the biggest change to me was the audio portion. I think it sounded fantastic and the dialogue replacement was a huge help to this movie. I felt like a lot of the bit actors with just a line or two had alternate line readings that they had intended to use but never had the chance to insert, because a lot of the stiff dialogue sounded way more natural than what I've been hearing for the last 40 years. I absolutely love this version of the movie more than ever and I cannot wait for September!
Surprisingly I was able to look at the movie with fresh eyes after all these years and I had a ton of nostalgia for 1979 and I really felt for the first time in a long time that it was actually a good movie. Not Star Trek action adventure story but a good Star Trek story none the less. I did like the fact that the movie was played completely serious and the actors hadn't yet slipped into the jokey style that began in Star Trek 3 and then got progressively worse during the original movie series.

Well, I just subscribed to Paramount+. Star Trek: TMP is my favorite Trek and no way I can wait until September to see the Directors Edition in 4K.
