There are a few lines of dialogue in Wrath of Khan that sound rough too, one of the lines Sulu says towards the start of the film “one quarter impulse power”.

I just checked on the P+ app and … it is in fact the newer transfer of the theatrical TMP.

What’s weird is that on the Apple TV channel for P+, it’s still the old ‘09 master.

ughh, this is probably the most jarring, I do rotowork, and it's not easy, but this is embarrassing that it's considered a finished shot.

My problem with inserting modern effects into older films are just that, that they stick out like a sore thumb. I think the worst example of this was the Donner Cut of Superman II. Not only did they insert CGI into a 1980 film, but they inserted cheap CGI and it looked bloody awful. If they could have found a way to do it with CGI but have it look like late 1970s composites then that would have been ideal.

A few obvious audio deletions, additions, color tweaks -- personally I'd have preferred taking the theatrical cut and having the deleted scenes from the ABC network TV version added back in. These cosmetic alterations do nothing for me in terms of adding to my enjoyment. If anything they're a distraction. The occasionally buzzing spaceships over Jerry Goldsmith's music in this new Directors Cut weren't needed either.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed the issues I had with the theatrical 4K release (the DNR on effects work) will be absent here.

I haven't a clue if they archived all the cut material as neg offcuts - but if they kept all the effects components they may well have.
I had forgotten about the 65mm film elements the team got access to. And from what I have heard so far about the D.C., there will be reason enough for me to get it the disc! I will skip streaming, though.

Ohhh..I gotta ask about this one for those that have seen it already-- how are the Vulcan subtitles? Hoping for something that at least somewhat resembles the original font.

Amen to that! I really wanted to like the Donner cut but just couldn't get passed the bad CGI.

Yeah it looked terrible.

Even a small part of "Bones" face, looks chopped of, in one of the shots.
Why did they change this?

This was very "hit and miss".
Some things looked great, and some looked bad/rushed.

Maybe my expectations was too high?

I'll stick with the theatrical cut.

The font is similar to the one used in the 2001 version. I guess they didn’t like the (extremely) 70’s font!

This is worst case scenario for me. I really have a hard time with the DNR.

One fix that I'm sure a lot might miss. During the 'Spock Walk', the team fixed the low frame rate of this shot.

This is so disappointing to me, I thought they nailed it in the original DVD DC, why change this?? I can only hope they keep working on this and keep revising it before any kind of UHD gets released

The phrase that immediately comes to my mind is "first, do no harm..."

Man, whoever said those “sparkly” opening credits were wonky looking wasn’t kidding. Screams fanedit…speaking as a faneditor.

Not a big deal but it would have been nice if they could have been able to fix the matte bleeding in a few instances such as at the 1:34.43 mark with back portions of the hull.

In spite of those types of shots when they were able to rescan and recomposite various VFX shots they looks absolutely fabulous. Immense clarity and detail.

It may be too early to make a definitive assessment but I think they did not deploy the same film wide DNR that was used the first four film releases. Just comparing the scene of the Spock Walk his face does not appear to have that same smeary temporal reconstruction affect found in the original TC transfer.

Yeah, not a fan of that but it does look better in the 4K stream rather than the 1080p stream.

Yeah, it does. The added brightness in the HDR helps mask the effect a bit. But I still don’t know why they couldn’t have just made the effect smooth rather than have that Christmas light effect, lol

I'm assuming this has been answered already but all of my streaming devices are Roku. I haven't signed up with parmount + yet but would like to do my free week jsut to watch htis in 4K. I'm not waiting until September to watch this. But I hear that Paramount + doesn't support 4K on Roku. Really wish they would have just released this day and date on physical media. Oh well. Can anyone confirm playback is only 1080p on Roku devices?

I was going to do something along the lines of making my rendition of the title look animated. I was aiming for the light source change positions to give the titles a shiny metal reflection but I didn't know how to do it.

You have to be a Premium subscriber and have a 4K-capable Roku device connected to a UHDTV or a 4K Roku TV and must be running the most current version of the Roku software.

I'm only a bit in, right to the point where Kirk tells Decker that he's taking back the Enterprise. Thus far, I'm mostly satisfied, but I do have a few gripes about the VFX looking somewhat off, particularly in the Enterprise Spacedock scene. Apart from that, the matte lines from composting the old VFX shots are clear as day, by choice or circumstance and I would have done away with those, digitally. As for the opening credits, I didn't like the credit transitions at all and they sort of took me out of the experience of watching the film. I will share my other thoughts later, after I have finished watching it.
