So anyway, I wouldn’t blame the designer. I’m sure they were doing their best with what they were told they had to make. And their first 5 (most likely superior) drafts were rejected.

Thanks - I respect your take on it. And yeah, no way for me to know if this was the designer’s best work, or if this was a directive from some hack who thought this is how the cover should look. But regardless, the person who ultimately approved it, owns it. And this one’s crap.
