This helps point out one of my [minor] complaints, why do the shuttles lose their red colored striping in the DE?

Ok, I have got home and seen this on my computer as opposed to my phone and the compression is dreadful, I got about 3 shots in and gave up. On the phone I can see the differences in design eg vfx but using it for quality is pointless.

The colors and contrast are always incorrect with that channel's videos.

So looking at the new title effects that resemble the 2001 DVD I wondered why they hadnt considered doing something that resembles the movie poster effect.

Below is my crude attempt, I dont have the software to do it properly and I understand the "Star Trek" was recreated from scratch for the 3 disk La La soundtrack set by the designer.

I think this would have made for an interesting beginning and tie to the poster quite well, "TMP" is in the main title font not the poster font as I dont have that.

Jokingly I was thinking after creating this that if they had gone down this route it would have been the most colourful thing in the entire film, compared to everything else sans maybe the Golden Gate Bridge shot lol!

Edit: just found a setting to make it slightly nearer the poster font and added stars

Do you have a better suggestion? Asking that earnestly.

I like this channel's comparisons more because they're quicker and offer a side by side comparison of each shot. I don't know of many other channels that do that HDR to SDR comparison.

They were only doing grays and beiges that year.

I was going to say they upgraded the model year for the DE. That red painting was so 2269!

Is that why the wall panel behind Spock loses all detail in the DE?

As much as I want to praise this Director's Edition of Star Trek The Motion Picture I can only say that it was a good experience but not the greatest experience. There's pixelation with Kirk, Bones, and Spock in the observation deck of the Enterprise Refit that was not good at all because there heads became squares and looked weird. Some scenes I felt were upscaled and not cleaned up properly buy the team behind the original Director's Edition like the fly by of the Enterprise pass a few planets after leaving drydock.
I feel like I'm more interested in watching the theatrical version again than watching this new Director's Edition.

The lounge scene was the first issue brought up with the new DE, the background has been changed to address a continuity error but it has been done well at all as evidenced by the cutout look to the edges.

As for the scenes you noticed where the quality was reduced those will be exactly the same native 4K shots (not upscaled) as from the theatrical UHD, they were not able to find the elements to re-composite all the shots they wanted but for the ones they could the difference is quite staggering and far superior to the mess of the theatrical UHD.

The lounge scene is being fixed for the disc release, but you're grossly over-exaggerating the "heads become squares" thing.

Upscaled? No. The team said they had the original 65mm elements.

It is?

(Forgive me if this is already common knowledge ... I admittedly haven't been following this thread super super closely)

Yeah, Daren said on Inglorious Treksperts that it's being fixed.

Not all shots had the original elements and they used the 35mm OCN and restored those shots as best they could. Upscale isn't the choice of phrase I would use here as nothing was upscaled to 4K. However, not every single shot had the original processed elements available.

Until I see it on the disc, I wouldn't say that it's definitive.

There's a few people involved in this production and until it's on the disc, it's speculation. Until it's officially stated that there will be changes (I need more than a podcast) for the disc release, I will take it as a wish list item.

This is requiring Paramount to approve extra budget to make extra changes. If the digital negative was already finalized, this may be a thornier issue than just "make the change."
