Doctor Strange

Medium to Strong

Pros
- I always like aerial shots of people clinging/hanging by the edge and this one checks that mark. It's a great opportunity for depth.
- Powerful depth here galore
- Pop-outs
- "Open your eye"

Cons
- While there are a number of pop-outs, they were mild for my taste
- As a movie of sorcery, there are many dark scenes and dark scenes dim 3D effect.

Movie. Nice movie with fantastic CGI. It sucks that Inception came out first though. Once you get past the mindless fast-driving for a supposed smart person , it becomes an enjoyable watch. Benedict as Doctor Strange is perfect. His face was made for it.

Here in US, May is when we celebrate Memorial Day. Edge of Tomorrow is a classic May watch as are any other 3D movies featuring uniformed soldiers, fighting enemies domestic, foreign or extra-foreign.

My other May movies - Finest Hours, Pacific Rim, Predator, Long Halftime Walk, Transformers, GI Joe, World War Z, Stalingrad, Godzilla.

No May the 4th be with us all?

It's Star Wars month too.

The "fighting domestic enemies" films didn't make it into 3D at all, did they? The 90s & 00s were chockablock with that theme, just a skosh too soon for the Bronze Age.

With so many talking about Johnny Depp decided to watch Trascendence.

It's a region B release with mixed 3D. Some scenes are good while others either resemble my own simulated efforts or literally flat.

Not the best 3D release but nonetheless preferable over watching it flat. Often it's just the fun of 3D that really matters.

Very good story with excellent 7.1 master audio. So again recommended for ianyone not lways requiring excellent quality to sit back and enjoy 3D

- The flower

Cons
- One scene too dark to make of the background I had to take my glasses off. C'mon tech staff, you can make the feel of dark even with ample lighting. This is not a horror story.

Movie. A fun thrill ride. If you want sci-fi when your mind is tired from work of life in general and you just want to decompress and chill, this is an excellent movie to watch. The visuals are stunning and worthy of Star Trek, Star Wars and Guardians of Galaxy comparisons. I enjoyed but it does not scream watch me again right away but that's just my take on it.
My opinion “too dark” complaints on movies more to do with your equipment and setup than a problem with the movie itself.

Watched The Hole (2009, dir. Joe Dante) for the first time in ages. The 3D and the film are better than I remembered - not top tier, but effective and enjoyable. Many shots clearly designed for 3D. A solid little teen horror.

I recently watched G-Force, it's very cringy but the frame breaks look awesome in OLED, although many shots could've had more depth.

Also watched Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and it really feels like it's missing without the frame breaks that it had in cinemas but it's still awesome in 3D. It was also the first time I've muxed a 3D bluray with Atmos and it was totally worth it.

Tested it as well a few days ago. It seems to sort of skip at that time. I don't think its a problem with the disc because I was able to rip it. Problem was with playback of the file so I suppose it wasn't encoded properly. So no point trying to clean the surface.

Rewatched John Carter. This is a great movie with some really good 3D. Why this wasn’t a major hit (Star Wars) when it came out is amazing. Highly recommended, not to be missed.

I believe that Taza, Son of Cochise uses the "night as day" shooting technique for its raid on
[Show spoiler]Fort Apache
. For some reason, this technique fell out of favor, but it got the point across, that a scene took place at night, while retaining enough light that I can see all the detail in the scene and not have to worry about disabling "Dynamic Black" lest I lose 3D sync.

Something that has posed such a problem for Bronze Age filmmakers that there was recently a discussion on here about how The Wolverine saw the brightness jacked up heavily for its 3d version to compensate.

The other day a thread here got me thinking about that and I remember that the previews and ads looked really hokey. I'd say it is a case-in-point for CGI looking better in 3D as those preview shots on TV (in 2D) of him leaping on Mars and fighting a "rancor" looked no bueno. Reviews were also savaging it seemingly as soon as it came out, no mercy or quarter given. Perhaps that lends credence to the ole claims that Disney wanted to see this one flop?

Stunningly enough, Wikipedia contains a rather blunt quote that women are repulsed by scifi, and so the word "Mars" was dropped from the title in part to try and, I guess, trick them into thinking that the flick about the shirtless man fighting obvious aliens on Mars was somehow not a scifi film?

Yet the contemporary film, "Mars Needs Moms", which was targeted at women/kids instead of scifi gents, retained "Mars" in its title and bombed bigly.

Unfortunately it came out right around when I wasn't really able to see very many, if any films, so I couldn't do my part.

JOHN CARTER (AND THE PRINCESS OF MARS) is an excellent old-fashioned sci-fi fantasy adventure, one of the best of the last thirty years IMO, way better as a film than AVATAR or any of the SW films after the beloved original trilogy. (And of course, both AVATAR and the SW series owe a huge debt to ERB’s JC stories in the first place.) And the 3D conversion is much better than it’s been given credit for; I think it looks quite respectable on the Blu-ray. I love this movie and am really sad that we’ll never get a sequel.

Luckily we got it on 3D Blu-ray and we can watch to our heart’s content.

Rewatched Valerian.....again. Why do I love this movie? Oh yeah, good movie, very good 3D and a great Atmos track. Highly recommended.

Edit : since I’m in region B , think I’ll watch The Hole, again tomorrow.

Is your copy of Valerian in Region B?

Still gets me that all the scenes in that film that the critics labeled the worst parts were actually the best parts, if seen in 3D. It is yet another 3D film that probably should have taken a page from the Golden Age and been released 3D-only.

Weird to hear, since the steelbook I had schlepped in from France is unlocked (for the feature film).
