Is this ESC editions first 4K? I guess Criterion might do it here someday.

I was going to assume that they are going to use the new 4K restoration that was done by the Cinémathèque française, Les Grands Films Classiques, Criterion Collection and the Cinémathèque suisse but the runtime of the UHD is listed as 107 minutes, while the new restoration is clocked in at 112 minutes.

I suspect this will be a similar scenario to The 400 Blows where the film only gets a 4K blu-ray release for the French market, given the state of the extant sources. The OCN doesn't even exist anymore.
Ben Stoddart of BFI was reluctant to release a 4K blu-ray of The 400 Blows, due to the state of the source material for that film and said for reasons he didn't elaborate on that a 4K would be viable in the French market but not in the UK. I can foresee a similar scenario with Rules of the Game. I preordered this regardless. P.S. What is ESC's track record with UHD encodings. Is there a risk of this being StudioCanal Le Cercle Rouge-level bad? |

I've looked at it for a while and it looks to me like the old blu has been boosted and the new 4K looks closer to how it should be

The Criterion Blu is one of poorest looking in the format. I always put it down to the quality of the source but these caps say otherwise.

I have the release. The UHD definitely does have English subtitles. After a quick check of the disc, the subtitles are either identical or very similar to the subtitles on the Criterion blu-ray.
Strangely, the blu-ray disc included with this release is not sourced from the 4K restoration, has a different framerate to the UHD disc, and does not have English subtitles, even though the blu-ray disc has artwork to match the UHD disc. |

I received mine from fnac, it arrived mint and took less than a week to the U.S. I watched it last night and it was a much better viewing experience than the Criterion release I saw years ago, massive upgrade.

I've heard that this UHD has HDR turned on by accident. How to fix this after ripping the disc to an MKV file, for example? And in the UHD player?

The restoration was finished in SDR and forced into an HDR container by the authoring house. It's possible you might be able to use your player and/or TV to force it into SDR, but given that it's hit or miss, the Criterion UHD is the way to go, even with its low pass filtering, due to preserving the original dynamic range and being compatible with any and all displays. The BFI Blu-ray would also be a good substitute, I'd imagine.
