1. Saw the announcement
2. Saw the pre-order link
3. Ordered
4. Watched the trailer
5. Saw it had been Ritrovata’d
6. Cancelled pre-order

When will this obsession with yellow-tinting movies end? Teal was bad enough but nowhere near as f***ing irritating as this.

And where are all the filmmakers who campaigned so vigorously against colorization - which is exactly what it is when you change the original colour scheme, and with it the mood, emotion or even weather and season the filmmakers sought to evoke to ones that have different values, whether its the piss filter, orange and teal or warming up - while this abomination ravages library after library's back catalogue?

We’re living through the age of revisionism.

The Ritrovata stuff in particular, I don’t see how anyone looks at that and thinks it looks good.

I saw an AI-colourised version of PENNY SERENADE a few days ago. Grading looked better than this…

I seem to remember reading a theory that the restoration houses apply these LUTs not because of aesthetic revisionism but because their technical workflow is set up for output to 35mm and it compensates for the colour value shift. Which makes sense but you'd imagine that digital masters are their primary market now, so you'd think they'd have changed course in the past decade

It’s a damning indictment on their workflow practices if that is the reason. Even QA should be picking up that output and saying “Hey fellas, this doesn’t look quite right”…

Screenbound have PANDORA coming soon, that’ll be another one if they’re using the Cohen restoration

It reminds me of their Rambo III and Flash Gordon transfers (though Flash Gordon wasn't Ritrovata) ; looks like it might be a strain on the eyes with how flashed it looks. I wouldn't be surprised to see the use of the kind of "automatic dirt removal procedure" that confuses actual details in the film with specks... All three of their Rambo transfers suffered from that in varying degrees.

I blame Peter Jackson, the Wachowskis, and Wong Kar-wai. The only thing worse than a studio doing this is a filmmaker supervising it.

In my opinion the reaction is a bit much. The trailer was very promising in my view. Yes there's a new grade in town, but it's not as dramatic as the usual Ritrovata job.

I'm glad you didn't mention Wild Bill Friedkin... it would have set Aclea off.

Yeah, there's a bit of yellow and teal but it looks punchy at least, whereas Ritrovata's stuff is super dull with zero contrast.

Yeah it doesn't look as bad as those imo, based on that trailer. This movie has always had a grimy transfer and this does look like an improvement. We'll see what the reviews say.

You mean Hurricane Billy? Beloved by all and a model of restraint: you won't hear a bad word from a soul who's dealt with him.

I am especially looking forward to the bonus documentary about Renato Casaro. He is such an underrated movie poster artist. At least in the USA. His new artwork for the Red Sonja 4K is just incredible. He really hasn't lost his touch even in his mid 80s!

Can you imagine how Conan the Barbarian would look like in 4k. Those costumes would get a lot of detail and the scenery would pop.

It would be a crime against humanity if Conan the Destroyer is the next one to get a 4k release.
Unless they save the best for last
