Probably the information I may have is not current, but I'll check just in case. I remember when I tried to book Fist (Tiger Man) I got the lead from a european TV station that had licensed it (Greek, I think) and I think North & South was part of a large collection available. Also saw a somewhat recent digital IIRC transfer of Lucky 13, so it must be around, on top of when Michael Starks transferred it field-sequential analog in the 90's and the French Queen of Kung-Fu production company was Pearl River Film https://baike.baidu.com/item/%E7%8F%...%8E%82/3527644) and the distributor (中国 电影 发行 放映 公司 发行) is listed in the promotional material.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the somewhat recent (and decent) digital transfer that I saw some time ago of Lucky 13 (AKA Super Lady)

These should be the people with a license or perhaps the rights, they are usually keen to foreign business AFAIK.

Although I believe the production studio was closed some time ago, it got transferred to a bigger conglomerate that was still active at least some 20 years ago. Don't know now, but shouldn't be hard to find out.

Having watched Treasure of the Four Crowns yesterday for the first time in 3D (I saw it flat back in 1983 on HBO), I got to thinking about the proliferation of Silver Age titles we've managed to get on 3D Blu Ray. We've done pretty well to be honest. Six of the 8 titles released in the 60s, five titles from the 70s, and 8 titles from the 80s. 19 titles from 1960-1984. Not as many as we've gotten from the Golden Age, but outside of the remaining 80s titles, most of what's left is porn anyhow and I frankly can do without any more 3D porn. The Stewardesses was quite enough for me.

While none of the movies from about Bellboy and the Playgirls to Spy Kids 3-D are good movies--The Polar Express is the first really good 3D movie since the Golden Age IMHO--I will say this: they gave you bang for your buck in terms of gimmick shots. Even the most boring of them--hello, Domo Arigato--had plenty of eye poking effects. And some are genuine guilty pleasures. I particularly like Silent Madness, Jaws 3D, and A*P*E, despite recognizing that they are all terrible movies.

I'm hoping we can get a few more (mainstream) Silver Age releases in the next few years. They're always a welcome watch when you just want to turn off your brain and have things thrust at you.

I think Domo Arigato will be the next Kickstarter after Robot Monster.

Is there any reason The Man Who Wasn't There can't be licensed from Paramount? Surely they aren't holding it for a "Paramount Presents" release.

Review from 1983:

This is a dead movie. I don't know exactly when it passed away, but I think it was dead by the time they started filming it, and it may have died even earlier -- back when somebody bought the notion of filming a "comic thriller" in 3-D. Since comedy requires our close attention and sympathy, and since 3-D is the most alienating movie gimmick since Smell-O-Vision, they were dead then and there.

"The Man Who Wasn't There" is arguably the worst movie from a major studio this year. Better movies have been shelved. This movie is so close to nothing that it's a minor miracle that it was actually released; not in recent memory has a movie, even a bad movie, offered less for your money. There are even shots where the actors seem to be standing around waiting for something to happen.

It doesn't even really exploit the 3-D gimmickry; there are a couple of knives hurled at the screen, and a couple of hilariously unconvincing shots in which actors "fall" toward the camera, and that's that.

I understand The Man Who Wasn't There was critically panned. The 3D in the trailer is good enough to warrant a restoration and a re-release on Blu-ray 3D though.

The movie itself doesn't look worse than any of the other Silver Age schlock we consume. It has the same IMDB rating as Jaws 3-D, and I thought that was a blast. Maybe there are others to prioritize ahead of it, especially Golden Age films like Hondo, Southwest Passage, and Flight to Tangier, but we are running out of domestic options. It looks at least on par with the Earl Owensbys and better than The Creeps, Run for Cover, and all of the pornos. If Paramount will make it available, then why not?

Maybe Starchaser: Legend of Orin (or Money from Home) could be an option sooner if 3DFA established a relationship with an international distributor.

Totally agree. There are titles of lesser production value on bluray and there will be a couple more released with sub-par rating, inferior even. I found the movie unremarkable like everybody else, but no more or less than some of the titles on the shelf on blu-ray.

If a cheap 3D master is allowed to be done, it surely will find its audience, just like other classic sleepers. Blind Kickstater anyone? Let's be honest, many 3D oldies are not top quality material when it comes to production, acting, story, ... but it is what it is.

I don't think any major studio will allow Kickstarter or typical crowdfunding. It would have to be funded by Kino Lorber or alternatively, a large "donation" from the 3-D Film Archive.

... thus the "Blind" part of the kickstater ... a kickstarter with no reward or official attachment to the restoration/licensing, but meant to raise funds for altruistic causes such as ...

Sounds like the 88 Films 3D release could be Four Dimensions of Greta. It was originally released in red/green anaglyph in theater.

I'd love to see this! I thought the 3D there looked excellent, very well designed and incredibly restrained by '80s standards (and, for a trailer, I'm amazed they didn't pack it with poke-you-in-the-eye nonsense!). Thanks for posting this.

Watched that trailer on my 3D tv and almost got stabbed in the face.

Good 3D depth and some popouts but the analogic image is really old... needs some good restoration.

I'm a fan of Steve Guttenberg and this movie would be a good asset to the 3D library available to everyone.

The knife throwing is directed to the screen... i flinched when it happened.

I believe it's a knife being thrown, i could be wrong.

Ah, Roger Ebert. I'd recognize his hostility to 3-D anywhere.

He's not wrong about The Man Who Wasn't There, of course. Whenever I watch it, I see a good cast being wasted. I also sense (but cannot prove) that the creative crew and technical team were perhaps wasted in a very different sense. I always wonder what substances were available to whom on an hourly basis behind the scenes.

I would very much like to see the film restored and properly presented. I have one interview with Lothrop Worth of Natural Vision fame wherein he raves about the 3-D-- not something he did an awful lot when discussing the work of other practitioners.

Kino Lorber just announced a new deal with Paramount that includes 71 titles. Fingers crossed for the 3-D FA to get a shot at The Man Who Wasn’t There and Flight to Tangier.
