I truly hope they don't get the director involved then or else it won't be the Theatrical done.

This title might be a long shot since Mel fell out of public favour... and hence isn't really a "bankable" name on a home video release in 2021.

Yeah, most importantly would be a 4K remaster of the theatrical cut, which needs it the most. I still have the old DVD-- I know the U.K had a Blu-Ray version, but I heard the HD master was pretty old and mediocre.

Ideally though they'd put out new UHD transfers of both versions and put them in a set.

Theatrical cut was edited on Avid so it wouldn't be real 4K.

The director's cut was edited on film from the original negative, as the avid files were discarded after release. If it ever makes it to 4k, it'll be that cut.

Oh, I would only want the director's cut of this. That would be a top 10 UHD upgrade for me.

Not a fan of the theatrical.

Uhhhh... Lots of movies were "edited" on avid. That doesn't mean theres not an OCN of the theatrical?! I don't even know if you understand this stuff based on this comment. There isn't any film based content in the Hollywood system that is lost like that.

Certain television that was edited on video particularly in SD is stuck there forever without up to tens of millions of dollars to re-do any effects work on top of scanning film elements. And if it was shot on video you're boned.

The DVD era is the sticking point of the "Straight up" edition here. That would be upscaled unless they went back to the original camera negative and redid the Helgeland version. As it would have been a digital intermediate at 2K.

I was just thinking about this movie and my wishlist would be a single release that has both cuts in 4k UHD. I expect we'll end up getting a 4k UHD release of "Payback" but I have a feeling we won't get both cuts.

Paramount has licensed some of their films to a collector's label like Shout, so if they do that for this film I think they'd definitely want to put out both versions. The theatrical Payback really needs a new remaster. I don't how the director's cut was put together, it came out in the early life of Blu-Ray-- I actually remember picking it up when Paramount went HD-DVD exclusive, because I wanted to make sure I got a copy before it went out of print!

Although I am curious about the theatrical version-- it has that really monochrome bleached out look, but that wasn't done to the negative because the director was able to get all that footage and completely redo the look of the movie from scratch. So they'd have to color-time the movie back that way if they did a new remaster. Would be funny if they got the Hedgeland and the guy who finished the theatrical version to come in and approve each cut, that would be awkward
