You need either ARC or eARC to get Atmos when you use streaming apps in the TV, but I believe the TV has to be compatible with Atmos too.

You don't need it for external devices if you plug the HDMI feed directly into the soundbar. If you plug the player directly into the TV, you can only get Atmos via eARC, not ARC.
