Started marathoning the show again for the first time in years. No issues with season 1, but of course when I got to season 2—the one that’s prohibitively expensive to replace—my Panasonic player choked on a tiny scratch near the end of the first episode. It played fine on my OPPO, but obviously for projecting I prefer the Panasonic player. First world problems, I know, but man, I wish these high end Panasonics weren’t so sensitive.

Not being a major studio release, I could see it dropping on a different day of the week than the usual Tuesday, I almost feel like one of the prior seasons even did drop on a Sunday but could be mistaken. If it’s not in next weeks ad, I don’t think it’s happening, but I could see stores getting it late this week and it potentially being available Sunday on. The amount of Stranger Things stuff setup at Target currently seems unreal to not culminate in the home video release to me.

Season 1 and 2 came out on a Tuesday, but they were officially "announced" on Sunday with Target's ad for that week. The 4K for s1 was a month after the BD though, and was on a Wednesday according to our date on here.

If it's not out either next week or by June 28th for part 2, then who knows when if ever it'll come out.

I was pretty sure the “main” releases were Tuesdays. I seemed to recall the 4K S1 being really strange where it just sort of started showing up at places, never was in the ads, and I believe many speculated the whole reason for the later release was possibly that it may have been thought about for recall/replacement due to it having an inferior sound option. I have both just because I love the packaging, but it’s easily one of the hardest 4K releases to recommend, between the audio and lack of HDR it’s a pretty meh 4K title, resolution bump is good though.

I watch the Blu of Season 1 and the 4k of Season 2. There is little image difference between the Blu-ray and 4k releases of S1. Both are in the SDR Rec 709 space as well. The lossless audio on the S1 Blu-ray is noticeably fuller sounding, however.


The Season 2 4k set started to correct these errors of omission with at least basic HDR10 and the cinema P3 color gamut in place, plus lossless audio.

I'm reaallllly hoping we keep getting these seasons on disc. But it wouldn't surprise me if we don't. Mike Flanagan was on Twitter saying he's trying to get Midnight Mass (a full Netflix production like ST) on disc and Netflix won't do it. Here's hoping the Duffers have something in their contract that guarantees more 4K and BD sets.

Wow, I didn't think it was possible to have a sadder promotional display.

Until I swung by my own Target. Same thing without the books or the cardboard backdrop. Just... a bunch of rubber

The only positive way I can possibly spin this is that Netflix clearly has no clue how to do promotional merchandising & product tie-ins, so there's always a chance they'll do a Blu-ray set from sheer inertia.

Netflix is literally a circus of bad decisions so their funny merch displays (and lack of part 3 on home video) is only icing on the cake.

What I feared most that would happen with physical media is these streaming networks locking stuff behind their service.

Want to watch Stranger Things? You HAVE to subscribe to Netflix. No DVD, Blu-rays, etc. Shows and movies will be used as a bargaining chip and bait to get people to subscribe because they have no alternative.

I see them as totally different markets. The physical media people want to own things physically. We'll still sub to your network AND buy the physical release and then some of us (like myself) will only buy the physical release.

Either way, you are going to make money. Locking things behind streaming only is wasted money but I'm sure the people in charge don't see that perspective.

I do think we'll get Stranger Things on UHD but only after the series has wrapped and they need to milk a little bit of extra money out of the brand.

I wish I could go back in time and purchase the 4K versions instead of the Blu-ray versions I got (or all versions ). At the time, I did not have a 4K player and was not interested in 4K at all. Hindsight 20/20.
Although, if I had the ability to go back in time, this would not be a priority on the list of things I wish I had done.

I would definitely buy Midnight Mass. I did not expect to like it as much as I did.

Did Flanagan flat out say they won't do it? I remember him saying he was trying but was there a follow up? Thankfully, we've got the precedent for ST.

That one seems like something Criterion likely would put out, and they have done Marriage Story and The Irishman which are both Netflix movies. The lack of hearing anything actually can be a sign a deal was struck, really often once a label picks something up it’s part of the contract they get to announce the release personally, is best for marketing purposes especially if it might be an especially long time before it comes out.
