Quickly, as a format: More capacity and higher bitrates for data transmission, so the picture stays clear during fast-action sequences. The extra capacity allows for less compression, so the more of the film's original quality is preserved. The hard-coating is very nice, too.
On a greater scale, Blu-ray has far more industry support. Just take a look on the homepage of this site to see who all has been announcing BD players. Toshiba is still the only hardware supporter of HD DVD (the xbox 360 add-on is a Toshiba drive). Follow JTK's advice and just look around. |

and if interactivity is a big point for you(or anyone), Profile 1.1 is almost here and apparently at least one new player (the Daewoo?) will be profile 2.0 capable on release. Many others(including PS3 and a model by Panasonic...i don't feel like researching right now) are rumored to be updatable via firmware upgrades.

Just curious though, as I always have to ask . . . what reasoning do they give you for supporting HD DVD? The already obsolete-ness of it? The lack of space for storage and lack of bandwidth? The crappy selection of movies? I just have to ask ![]() |

You know, whenever the subject of the format war comes up w/ someone not very knowledgeable of it, they immediately say that Blu-ray will lose because Sony doesn't share its technology (this actually came up last week with me). I then go on to explain how Toshiba is the only hardware supporter of HD DVD (basically) and then I name off all companies who make BD players (thanks to IFA my list is much longer now!). That usually opens up their eyes, then you tell them of the sales advantages for software, and that all PS3s have a BD player.
Also, about the porn comment, you can buy porn on Blu-ray (Vivid has at least one title out on it, I think. I know "Debbie Does Dallas...Again," was announced for it, and there is Japanese porn on BD). |

Let not forget the studio support with Blu-Ray has 6 out of the 8 major Hollywood studios, while HD-DVD only has 3 major studios backing them up. Lossless audiois on a lot more Blu-Ray discs than on HD-DVD due to the bigger capacity and bandwidth of Blu-Ray. Also if they want to pay for HD Porn tell them they can also buy Porn on Blu-Ray, here is one that is already available: Debbie Does Dallas BTW I work at Best Buy as well.

Tell them less than 10% of hd dvd releases have actual HD audio as in PCM, DD-THD or DTS-MA.
100% of all BD exclusive major studios have HD audio on every single release. This can't be pointed out enough IMO, and hd dvd not having enough bandwidth has to be the culprit or hd dvd is just ripping off their customers by charging usually more than BD prices for lower specs. Either way its total B.S. hd dvd equals the good enough format, but unfortunately not even close to good enough for many of us. |
