So, with THE DIAMOND WIZARD and I, THE JURY getting released, that brings the tally of Golden Age 3-D movies on Blu-ray to 23 out of 50 (It's 24 out of 51 when you count EL CORAZON Y LA ESPADA). I wonder what other possibilities exist beyond those two titles?

2022 marks the 70th anniversary of BWANA DEVIL, so I wonder if that's a possibility. CAT-WOMEN OF THE MOON should be a possibility, being we've been seeing a lot of other Wade Williams' titles finally getting released. Maybe HANNAH LEE, too?

I've given up hope that we'll ever get any of the Warner-owned titles. The only way that will happen is if/when there's a resurgence of interest in 3-D. Maybe the release of AVATAR 2 will help with that?

Reading the clues, Bwana Devil is likely already licensed by Kino Lorber, and we should be lobbying for them to license and fund Southwest Passage from MGM too. We can also pray that Kino's re-release of Twilight Time's Sony 3D titles allows them more trust and leeway to access Sony's unrestored titles.

Here are the remainder of US Golden Age 3D features, not controlled by Warner, Sony, or Disney:

1. Southwest Passage - MGM
2. Hondo - Batjac Productions, Has DCP
3. Flight to Tangier - Paramount, Expensive 3-strip Technicolor restoration
4. Money from Home - Paramount, Waiting for Olive's 2018 license to expire
5. Hannah Lee - Public Domain?, Controlled by Wade Williams?
6. Cat-Women of the Moon - Public Domain?, Controlled by Wade Williams?
7. The Glass Web - Universal, Has DCP, "Temptation" music rights issues in US, unsure worldwide
8. Top Banana - MGM, Lost left eye, except for 20-30sec from 35mm trailer

Each has their own restoration obstacles to overcome, some larger than others, but those are the only ones possible to license at the moment.

Is there any hope of prying GORILLA AT LARGE from Disney? I just can't see them having any interest whatsoever in a title like that. You can buy a HD streaming version of it online, but it's 2-D. I don't see Disney ever paying for a 3-D restoration themselves, so is there a chance a boutique label can get it? Would Disney allow a Kickstarter? Is there a film foundation willing to fund a restoration?

Maybe if we could trick Disney into thinking that the Gorilla was part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it would have a chance.

We don't want snide remarks from an academic (or anyone else) to hurt those supporting the restoration and distribution of classic films. There are problems enough with loss of media sources. ClassicFlix will have my support when a preorder is available.

First you say this:

It's bad all the way around..... I'm sure this will hurt Classic Flix bottom line. I'm delaying my purchase, who else will?

Now you say this:

Which one is it?

None of this is ClassicFlix fault... so I chooss to support them and will hope for the best.At least we've been cautioned. I don't know how the industry works... Will ClassicFlix have an opportunity to review the master before production? Can they request additional work if needed? Could there have been a a projection misalignment at that screening?

No matter how you look at it. This might be my only opportunity to purchase this movie in 3D.

Well, it does have its own thread, but for what it's worth I'm overjoyed that it's coming out and that the 3-DFA are working on it.

Another Golden Age 3D classic rescued by the foremost 3D experts in the world, and it’s the one that kicked it all off. Really looking forward to this one.

Super excited for Bwana Devil! We really are experiencing a bounty of riches this year.

Now, I hate to turn so quickly to speculation, but it has been a big news day… The Kino Lorber Insider confirmed at least one 3D title in the new Paramount deal. When a later comment suggested it might be a title rhyming with “Bunny from Rome”, they ‘liked’ the post. I don’t want to speculate wildly based on a like, so this is absolute grain of salt take, but we are coming up on five years next month from the Olive Films flat release of Money From Home. Maybe that license is expiring? This is far from my area of expertise, so maybe more knowledgable folks can shoot this down. Based on its reputation as one of the final “prestige” 3D releases (quoting Mike Ballew), as well as the 3DFA’s prior efforts to get this 3D release to happen in 2017, it would certainly be another feather in the cap for Kino and the 3DFA to finally put it out on disc!

Alas it is not to be. This has all been pointed out in other threads, but I wanted to clear up my own speculation. Kino Insider confirmed there are no previous Olive titles in the deal, so Money From Home is out. With Hondo unlikely due to the Wayne family, we’re left with Flight to Tangier and The Man Who Wasn’t There. I will be very happy with either since every vintage release is a win, but knowing what we do about the condition of the elements and pricey restoration for Tangier, my bet at this point is on Man Who Wasn’t There.

A few weeks ago, a Facebook group called Old Images of Philadelphia had a post about the May 20, 1982 showing of Revenge of the Creature in 3D on old TV 48. That was the first 3D movie I ever watched and touched off my 40 year obsession with the format. Tonight, in celebration of that showing, I watched (flat) Top Banana, the last of Golden Age 3D movies I still needed to watch. So now I can say I've seen all 50 movies, 42 of them in true 3D

Separately, on another forum, Kino Insider pretty much confirmed that Hondo is not the 3D film in the Paramount deal. So it looks like it's either Flight to Tangier or The Man Who Wasn't There.

Wow! I just found out about BWANA DEVIL just now. What a time to be a Golden Age 3-D fan! ROBOT MONSTER, THE DIAMOND WIZARD, I, THE JURY and now BWANA DEVIL! Oh my gosh! And maybe even FLIGHT TO TANGIER?!

The Man Who Wasn't There is more likely to come first since it will be less expensive to scan. I hope we get Flight to Tangier too though. The BFI seems to have a treasure trove of 3D prints to re-discover.
