An excellent and a good choice!

I was hoping that we are close to seeing a Soviet film announced - The Cranes are Flying or Ivan's Childhood would have been great; obviously we are not yet ready for Solaris - but these are solid additions to the Criterion collection.

I would crap my pants for a Cranes Are Flying Blu Ray. It's one of my top 5 films of all time.

Anyone else notice that the DVD edition of Monetery is 3 discs and about $9 more than the blu? Pretty sure the same features, however, I did not look very close at the DVD.
This is happening all over Amazon.com as well. While some of the double-disc catalog DVDs are still as high as $36.99, the Blu-rays of the same titles post in at about $27.99 a pop and can drop to as low as $24.49 before release, always with the same video features (though sometimes they shorten the booklet or remove texts).

It will be interesting to see the Amazon price for The Complete Monterey Pop Festival Blu-ray when it gets a listing.

How about Andrei Rublev? The first and only time I watched this I loathed it for its complexity, but I really want to see it again as I'm certain I would appreciate it more years later.

And it's not a Soviet production, but I'd love to see Tarkovsky's Offret (The Sacrifice) on Criterion Blu-ray.

This film needs serious restoration work. I also believe that it would be far more difficult to bring to Blu-ray at the moment. This being said, there is a very good print for Ivan's Childhood, which Criterion could license through MK2 (in fact, I am fairly certain they could work with the one they used for their recent DVD release). There is also a very good French print in circulation for The Cranes are Flying. On the other hand, I keep a fairly close eye on Eastern European cinema and what is being released in different European markets, and I am not aware of a strong print for Andrei Rublev. So, a different type of work needs to be done there.

That makes sense. I remember that they had a problem even finding a complete print for the film's DVD releases.

How sad that Andrei Rublev needs a lot of restoration work because that must postpone any blue-ray edition a number of years, given the fact that it cannot be a big seller. I really love this film and it would be absolutely fantastic in Blue-ray.....

Between Europe and Russia, they will eventually come up with the time and money to restore a print for Blu-ray. Although it would help if Region C saw more market penetration first.

I completely agree.

I think it was Ingmar Bergman who once said that while he and others managed to get to the footstep of the door to genuine insights about human nature, Tarkovski walked through that door.

Hmm. I really like Pierrot le Fou, but it seems like I just bought this on DVD. It should look nice in HD, though.

I'm surprised no one's corrected you yet, seeing as there's been so much debate over the release of...

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

However, I assume you meant the first set of two 1-disc Blu-rays. I know you know what you're talking about, I just wanted to clarify. Don't hurt me.

That said, I'm picking these up for sure. Not only because they're Criterion, not only because they're Blu-ray, but also - just because.

As collectors of Criterion Blu's, do you guys plan on picking up all three Monterey Pop releases or just "The Complete Monterey Pop Festival"? As a completist, I am tempted to pick up all three...I'm just curious as to what the rest of you plan on doing...

Actually, I always completely forget about "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" as a two-disc because it's in the regular blue-colored cases, so thanks for reminding me. But, actually I was talking out of my butt as "The Complete Monterey Pop Festival" being the first 2-disc set out in possibly their own Criterion clear cases, or maybe it'll be cardboard packaging.

The set (spine 167) will have both discs from the individual spine 168 and 169 movies - so in terms of content, 'The Complete Monterey Pop Festival' will be 'complete.' In terms of packaging, I'm unsure. The best would be a slipcover with spine 167 on it holding two individual cases inside - one with spine 168, the other with spine 169. But I don't know how the DVD version handles this.

I am not too familiar with the criterion listing but what about Sergei Eisenstein? I would love to have Alexander Nevsky on BD?

The different spine numbers is the problem (from a collector's standpoint)...I know the Blu-Ray collection will never be complete (due to circumstances beyond my control), but I'd like to be as close as possible. If the "Complete" release is only a slip cover with the other two inside of it, then I will just buy that. If it comes in it's own unique packaging, then I will have to consider buying all three.

They have a DVD box set with Alexander Nevsky and both Ivan the Terrible films. A Blu release of the box set would be great.
